What bothers me about the huge range in prices is that the lowest price watch will have exactly the same core look and function as the highest price watch. I think that prospective wealthy buyers, at least in the western world, want something more exclusive to differentiate themselves from the unwashed masses. I'm not convinced that materials alone will do it. On the other hand, what do I know, since my multimillionaire cousin in Seattle told me bluntly that I have "no sense of personal style."

Gruber predicts the same price for the Watch Edition....starting at $7500. I could easily see $5000 too, especially if there's no trade-up nor upgrade program, which Gruber now pooh-poohs.
JD: Not giving tax advice here, but if the sale that generated the wash sale didn't include disposition of your L-T stock, then the basis of that should be unaffected by subsequent purchase>sale activity that does trigger wash sale rules.
Edit: I use Gainskeeper with Ameritrade to produce my Schedule D. It's a free service and it sure beats doing things by hand. I say "should be" above because the rules on wash sale reporting are not all that well developed, and assumptions about average cost, specific identification, etc. will impact reported gain.

We've now officially reached the point where watch speculation has jumped the shark. Enough!
Let's birth this baby tomorrow and deal with facts, not speculation. I'm impatient and tired of not knowing but being endlessly educated by the media, who know less than I do. Grrrr.
( sorry. I'm grumpy cause by Fruit Loops got soggy)

I think where Gruber goes wrong about pricing is this: People are willing to pay huge sums for the exclusivity of traditional gold timepieces because they're not subject to technological obsolescence. However, if Gruber believes that the Apple Watch won't have an "upgrade path" either through parts or Apple credit, then paying upwards of $20k for two-three years worth of exclusivity is over the top expensive. That's not Apple.
Why are Gruber's steel watch price estimates cause for concern? Ignore the Citi analyst who predicts an Edition $950 price point: Either Citi is very dumb or is attempting to manipulate expectations.
End of jumping sharks...

I am sure Apple has thought this through a thousand times. Whatever the advertising campaign is that accompanies the pricing strategy, it will reinforce the message that Apple wants to convey....style for a price, beauty for the masses, functionality with glamor, exclusivity with cache. Then it will all fall together. Darn....the Fruit Loops!!!

Very interesting shark jumping article: @ryan: TC’s report that many Apple Watch have “nearly ‘stopped’ using their phone during the day” matches what I’ve heard: t.co/7Oeh5HPfzm

Rumor is Mercel has two on order.......interesting color. Too late. My newest addition to the family just made its way through the Panama Canal, enroute to San Diego, before being transported home. I'm not a big fan of Astons. Sorry Jony, but they're too big and heavy.

Its 800 bhp should move it along nicely… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aston_Martin_VulcanYou can add one of the 24 to be produced to your stable for a mere $2.3 million.

All carbon fiber body with V12 power. Track only car? Right. Who would risk 2.3m driving it on the track? Crazy, man.

Regarding the pricing, let's not underestimate the expertise of Ahrendts and Deneve. They were hired for a reason - they know the luxury market inside and out. Whatever the price will be, I expect it to be the correct choice.
Let's also not underestimate the importance of strong sales for the other two lines. That is where Apple really needs to do well to cement the Apple Watch as a bonafide product category that will stand on its own. Far too much attention is being placed on the Edition line.

ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh Bud, you need to explain to our first-time poster here that there's a superstition around here that car talk can lead to a crash in AAPL due to its direct correlation with hubris and irrational exuberance. Deasys, you may continue writing at will...

the MILANESE LOOP or the link bracelet LINK BRACELET Crafted from the same 316L stainless steel alloy as the case, the Link Bracelet has more than 100 components. The machining process is so precise, it takes nearly nine hours to cut the links for a single band. In part that’s because they aren’t simply a uniform size, but subtly increase in width as they approach the case. Once assembled, the links are brushed by hand to ensure that the texture follows the contours of the design. The custom butterfly closure folds neatly within the bracelet. And several links feature a simple release button, so you can add and remove links without any special tools. Available in stainless steel and space black stainless steel. $1000 FOR THE LINK BRACELET? www.apple.com/watch/apple-watch/MILANESE LOOP A modern interpretation of a design developed in Milan at the end of the 19th century. Woven on specialized Italian machines, the smooth stainless steel mesh wraps fluidly around your wrist. And because it’s fully magnetic, the Milanese Loop is infinitely adjustable, ensuring a perfect fit.

Anyone else planning to BTFD tomorrow? I can't follow it continually, so I put in limit orders for between 1 to 4 percent drop.

Deasys, you may continue writing at will... I think we first noticed (apple all time high) the correlation after a discussion of algorithms (apple all time high) that made investment decisions based on the frequency of certain (apple all time high) words appearing in blogs and articles and boards like this. Evidently, (apple all time high) they scan all this input and develop genetic (apple all time high) algorithms that evolve based on their predictive power. The exuberance (apple all time high) and hubris that mark a top manifested here in talk of exotic cars, especially when Gregg was posting. It is more a hypothesis than a superstition, but one that no one wants to really test. (apple all time high) There are of course other equally valid hypotheses. Some believe that Apple trades on fundamentals, some believe that it trades on technicals. In the years that I have watched APPL, I think it is unique. I think it trades on FUDamentals. I ain't complaining though.

Especially when compared to the launch of a new product category. My completely non techie wife has herself in a frenzy about needing this watch. She had no idea about the likely price points of the Edition versions, and has been staring at the Rose Gold one. I am trying to tell her that the price is going to be ridiculous. We will see if I win this one ir not.
