Apple Watch Edition, like most things tech, are inherently ill-suited to the "buy for life"/"heirloom" model.

I think I have suggested before that upgradability makes sense just for the Edition series. Certainly there are a lot of people who can drop $17,000 on a disposable watch, just like they can drop $150,000 on a depreciating asset like a car, but there are a lot more who might consider the Edition version if they were buying a watch for life. The extremely wealthy and I have observed a pact to avoid each other, so I don't really know how they think, but I always imagined that when they bought a Rolex, they assumed that they would own it and pass it on to their children. But what would be the point if the watch is just an obsolete relic? I think that the watches that form Apples competition are timeless timepieces. Can Apple really compete at that price range with a watch that will only be attractive for 2-3 years? If the Edition is a status symbol, how does that work when there is a new version out? Like I said, I don't really understand how those people think, but I think upgrades are the make it or break it issue for that tier of watches It is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum. I suppose though that if you have enough wealth you don't have to think of the Edition as an heirloom. Rather, for a mere $10K a year or so on average depending on the model config, you get to have your svelte Russian model girlfriend flaunting the latest Edition pink gold and loving you just that much more. Da!

I think that the watches that form Apples competition are timeless timepieces... Or, in a few weeks, we are about to enter a world where any watch by Rolex or the other luxury swiss watchmakers are all obsolete relics. Give it a few years, but soon enough a watch that only tells the date and time will seem as ridiculous and as pointless a purchase as a typewriter, made from precious metals or not.

10 videos total. ONLY 3 available now. hmmmm. It's a sort of tease from Apple, like an Advent calendar leading up to the 10th perhaps?

Da! Wait...,it comes with a configureable model girlfriend? Definitely going to be a harder sell with my wife but all of a sudden the "use case" becomes a bit more compelling.

Although we're living in strange times. You can binge watch whole series on Netflix when released but we have to wait a period of time to see the promotional videos about the Watch?

Heirloom? Who would want a thing for heirloom? Old fashion!!! Nowadays, is a piece of paper or digital that say you own something BIG like 10% of AAPL. The way to collect Watch Edition is to keep it in its original package... buy every year.

For those who were as mystified as I was, here is a bit more background information. Thanks, Nagrani, that was a cool piece of Apple history of which I was unaware.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. Now enough of this flatline bullshit, and let's commence the Watch release and earnings release rise into the stratosphere!

It sounds like a bad joke.
I'll take post-1996 Apple Watches for $399 or so, Alex
