So now I'm wondering, if the Apple Watches are already built, and the orders are in, and Apple is not planning to stock any for walk-in purchase on "launch day", why wait? Two weeks to just sit there? Any delay will still be banked in FY15Q3. Are they still trying to get the software loaded? Heck, it will just push whatever latest update first thing out of the box, right? It's almost like they have an existing paradigm (pre-order, launch day) still in effect even after they changed the key reason behind the paradigm (walk-in purchases). Why get people excited for a product (with try on sessions) for something they won't be able to buy until June anyway?
Conclusion: just ship the stupid things, and everybody will be happier. There is no incentive for waiting. What am I missing here?

I can definitely see them using pre-orders to set the production mix going forward, to avoid the iPhone 5S vs 5c imbalance, where they ended up with stacks of extra 5c's. "Unexpected demand for 5S" shouldn't be an issue, and I guess they need one week to adjust production lines to fit orders, and another week to load software, package, and ship.

The Edition watches at one point were showing August delivery. Now they're showing June. Interesting.
Also, the new MacBooks have slipped from 3-4 weeks to 4-6 weeks.

Gee......that little sobriquet has been there for, what, two years? Thanks for paying attention Karnac.. It's been that long since I've read one of your posts....lol Why would anyone pay a third party $18k when they can get one for less in June from Apple direct? When the delivery date was August yesterday (or Friday?), it opened up this eBay arbitrage until Tim rolled up his pant legs, mined a little gold on Saturday and is now promising June delivery. I guess I won't bid on this now.

And they'll be matched up in one box as I understand it. It's a different challenge than "one box for the case", "one box for the band", done. And THAT a la carte approach, aside from probably deeply offending Jony Ive's sensibilities, would be WORSE for store inventory, even though they WILL eventually carry bands.

I had my Apple Watch appointment at the Florida Mall today, the store was very busy for a Sunday. The Microsoft store next door had a couple customers but the Swatch store had nobody in there except for the five employees. I had good customer support and was impressed with how light and well made the watches are. I'm not sure what the big deal is about what material the case is made of........85% is display. I' m getting the Silver Sport Watch with the standard blue band and will look at third party bands when they come out......I did however like the leather band.

So funny you post this "hidden indicator" piece. I had a similar thought about the refurb page. Some items are posted to the refurb page and are picked up right away. The decision to purchase is regularly based first on price, then features. On the refurb page, price as a discriminator is erased. So Apple can see what features get selected over others. I think this is why they put 8gb RAM and a 256gb SSD in the new gold Macbook. Any time I have shopped for a 8gb/256GB MB Air 11", they were always sold out. Very rare to see them. Hence, those features are most desired. With the blue heart the choice is overt, not covert. Good pull.

They almost definitely have to do this! There are so many different variations of watch that it would be impossible to stock them all (either at stores or at distribution centers). So they will have to gauge which are most popular (probably 5-10% of the combinations) over the next few weeks/months, then they can stock those 5-10% and the 90-95% will always end up being "special orders" that will have delivery dates in the future. That's how having many different SKUs works, the same applies to Dell computers with "special" options, they build to order.

Apple can easily blow out iPhone sales in 2007 and iPad sales in 2010 at launch.
In 2007, 270k iPhones were sold over 2 days on launch weekend. In 2010, 300k iPads were sold in one day (Sat).

Lets just assume this survey is accurate for a minute.
1 million in first day in US only
Est: 1/2 million on Sat + Sun in US only - for a total of 1.5 in US...?
1 million in other launch countries over whole first weekend...?
= 2.5 million preorders on first weekend. That would be huge.
We're talking easily 5 million in first quarter of sales...
