With AAPL price action repeatedly deviating from the established patterns we had come to know and count upon, it has become tougher to discern how to play earnings... And way too early anyway. Up from here, IMHO, is a no brainier as is much higher by EOYear and a LOT of volatility between now and then. My best divination suspects a big move up then big move down pre earnings followed by another big move up post earnings.
Seek first to understand.

Reminds me of when Apple had an event to release iPod speakers and some cases.

Just to mixup the day some more, it looks like Microsoft will finally be releasing pricing details and preorders for the surface RT.
I will be interested to see what model they go with - either the amazon/google model of selling at cost (thereby screwing its biggest customers/partners) or the apple hardware profit model (thereby having to compete with apple on pure product desirability rather than trying to enter market by undercutting).
I think they will try and mix it up, and come in with a base entry level surface RT unit around $400....and fail miserably and resort to fire sale pricing before Xmas.

+1 for the Keynote About Nothing. That's good stuff. I can imagine the press reports... APPLE'S NOTHING DISAPPOINTS ...said one analyst, "You'd expect a company like Apple to have a more innovative take on Nothing. But the Nothing they announced had nothing about it that stood out from competitors. It was a very ordinary Nothing with no new non-features. Apple is clearly in trouble - Steve Jobs would never have allowed this Nothing to not ship."

If we get a gap up, watch to see of it's "gap & go" or "gap & crap." Usually, if gap up isn't closed/faded in first 90 minutes, then more upside.

On the premise the immediate post-earnings pattern hasn't (yet) changed, I'm skipping the earnings trade, and depending on what I see, will attempt the fade play (day trade only) -- long a gap down or short a gap up. No matter what happens, I'm not selling core intermediate- or long-term positions anytime soon as I expect a 200+ point run after this consolidation period.

M$ finally announce Surface pricing...they are matching same-memory-capacity iPads for price, i.e. $499/599/699 for 16/32/64GB. But that's WITHOUT the touch/keyboard covers that M$ are plugging as a competitive advantage - those cost $120-140 more. But I'm sure the press will report it as M$ releasing Surface at prices directly competitive with Apple, and also mention that Surface has a more advanced cover but without mentioning that the cover isn't included. Sorry, do I sound paranoid?

There's no historical precedence for the success the iPhone has experienced either. Customers will continue to shell out hundreds of dollars on new iPhones as long as they continue to deliver the best ecosystem in the smartphone marketplace. I don't believe subsidy cuts from mobile network operators are something we need to worry about yet. The high subsidies of the iPhone get offset by the ever increasing cost of data plans.

Sorry, do I sound paranoid? Major fail. The cover is supposed to be a defining feature. Similar covers are available for the iPad. There's no differentiation here. Why buy a Surface? Compared to the iPad, you get a tablet with no retina display, crappy app support, and running Windows?

My bad...does include touch cover, but that's not the keyboard cover M$ has been touting the most. Major fail. The cover is supposed to be a defining feature. Was that a Red Dog Reversal? I thought a Red Dog Reversal would include going below yesterdays low.... I think that's correct. But no continuation from yesterday, at least not yet. Still in the first hour, however.
