Rumor: European prices on iPad mini. Anybody up for translation ? www.ifrick.ch/2012/10/ipad-mini-media-markt-listet-gerate-und-preise-im-warensystem/249 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 8 GB WLAN 349 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 8 GB WLAN und UMTS 349 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 16 GB WLAN 449 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 16 GB WLAN und UMTS 449 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 32 GB WLAN 549 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 32 GB WLAN und UMTS 549 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 64 GB WLAN 649 Euro: Apple iPad Mini 64 GB WLAN und UMTS Euro is currently: 1 Euro = 1.2957 dollars. Or 30 % markup over US ? I have a hard time believing these prices if translated to dollars. $ 249 for an iPad Mini or even less. Furthermore, 8 GB iPad Mini ?

I have a hard time believing these prices if translated to dollars. $ 249 for an iPad Mini or even less. Furthermore, 8 GB iPad Mini ? $249: Apple iPad Mini 8 GB WiFi $379: Apple iPad Mini 8 GB WiFi & 4G $349: Apple iPad Mini 32 GB WiFi $479: Apple iPad Mini 32 GB WiFi & 4G $449: Apple iPad Mini 64 GB WiFi $579: Apple iPad Mini 64 GB WiFi & 4G But I also wouldn't be surprised if Apple starts at $299 for 16 GB. The 8 GB versions would be Apple's version of a loss-leader (not really sold at cost). It'll kill sales of the iPod touch 4 and, more importantly, squash sales of the more costly Kindles and the Nexus 7. Santa will have millions in his sleigh later this year. My guess is demand will still be greatest for the two 32 GB models.

8gb is ample if you are just reading books, using Facebook, email, web browsing, running a few apps etc.
People have been buying 8gb iPhones & iPods for years without complaint.

hmmm, the problem w/8GB is apps for retina display will use up a lot of your space, but that's assuming the mini will have a retina display . Never assume anything . I think 16GB is a minimum in this day and age regardless of the device display.

Would blow my mind if apple could do a retina display at $249 though - that would eliminate virtually all competition in the short term. It will still be a higher quality display than the iPad 1 & 2 of course - same resolution at a smaller size equals a higher pixel density, which will make it more pleasant to read text on.

I wouldn't mind Apple going with "Option 3" - making a new screen size from the iPad "3" panels - but the resolutions/developer adjustment/Apple aesthetics could be too confusing.
1024x768 is my bet. Sure, the press will likely "trash" Apple for such a "poor quality" display. At least most of the target market is equally likely not to give a rip the first year.

Some commenters over at MacDailyNews think the iPad Mini can start at $ 199. I posted that they should lay off the sauce.

I am hoping we see colored backing. I think it would entice a lot of the crowd that doesn't currently own an iPad.

Ever since iPhone 5 pixel dimensions were leaked, I've been wondering if iPad pixel dimensions would be modified to fit the taller apps. Could that be the rumored design change? Part of doubling down on secrecy? I think Apple will stick with 1024x768 rather than bump up resolution to accomodate the 1136 vertical pixels of iPhone 5 apps. Let the developers deal with the easy design challenge. iPhone apps already lose some vertical space when a phone call is in the background, so they need to be designed to work with some fewer pixels. I suppose Apple could help out a bit by obscuring the status bar when displaying those taller iPhone 5 apps on iPads.

I said this at asymco.com:
Here's something people are not considering, but which might positively surprise Wall St.. Apple announces an early refresh of The New iPad (3) on Tuesday. Why? Because it's clear Apple wants to transition all their iPods, iPhones, and iPads to the new Lightning connector as quickly as possible. No way can Apple sell The New iPad this holiday quarter with the old connector when everything else including the iPad mini is using the Lightning connector. Perhaps the large number of SKU's for the mini is because this includes the current iPad.
Alternatively, it makes a lot of sense to have a selection of new colors for a lower-end iPad mini just as the iPod nano has many colors while the iPod Touch is more "business".

The only thing is, while it's technically feasible, would Apple really swap out just the Lightning cable and leave the rest of iPad 3 more or less alone? That might anger a bunch of existing iPad 3 owners somehow. I'm also not so sure how the "limited edition" would play with the buying public, since their expectation would be for the new iPad to continue to be the flagship for another 4-5 months. The other alternative is to offer an A6-based iPad about 7-8 months or so after the iPad 3. Which could also throw off/tick off new iPad owners whose new iPad ain't so new anymore.
In either case, customers are expecting (and Apple can realistically only deliver) a new iOS generation about once a year. I don't think Apple wants to mess with expectations much if at all possible. And I think Apple likes its iPad in March or so, iPhone in September or so primary cadence. But we'll see.

One thought:
MacBook Pro 2012 models: available in non-retina & premium retina models. iPad 9.7": available in entry level non-retina & premium retina models. IPod touch: available in entry level 3.5" display & premium 4" display model. iPhone: available in entry level & middle range 3.5" display models & premium 4" display model. (For the previous 2 years the entry level iPhone was non-retina, while premium model was retina)
My point? It's possible next week we see an entry level non-retina 7.85" iPad, AND a premium retina 7.85" iPad for ($100-$150 more than entry level).

I don't think it will happen - Apple is still selling millions of iPod touchs, shuffles, iPhone 4 & 4S, and iPad 2 & 3 units that all have the 30 pin dock connector (the iPhones and iPods will likely still have it until September 2013).

appleinsider.com/articles/12/10/19/apple-predicted-to-phase-out-ipad-2-to-streamline-product-line-for-ipad-miniKilling iPad 2 next week makes sense. The mini should suit the entry level and education markets quite nicely moving forward. Upgrading 9.7" iPad with lightning connector, A6 and a lighter battery (possible because of the efficiency improvements versus A5X) prior to the holiday shopping season also makes sense. Probably not as likely as I haven't seen any leaked parts yet, but It would be silly to sell the entry level product with the fancy new connector if the flagship product doesn't have it. Macs see mid year refreshes, so it wouldn't be out of the question.

A mid-cycle refresh would explain dropping the number nomenclature and calling the current model the "new iPad".

The A6 in the iPhone lacks the GPU power to drive the iPad 3 display - it would have to be another new chip design (A6X) - which I presume won't appear until the iPad 4.

Actually, it MIGHT have the GPU power. Anandtech said the A6 has somewhat similar GPU power to iPad 3. But I really doubt a 2048x1536 device will debut on the iPad mini. I'd be thrilled wih 1366x1024 (7.85" panel based on the iPad 3 panels), and I doubt _that's_ happening.

Anyone think ipad mini will include SIRI? I think I read that the new ipad in iOS 6 now does so I would assume mini will too.
Also any thoughts on quality/possiblity of front and back cameras on ipad mini.
Would be an astounding device for $329, a mind blowing one for $299

Got a question guys. Friend just bought the new iPad. Is there a Apple policy that would enable her to exchange Her 3rd gen iPad for the new 4th gen iPad? Obviously she had no idea that iPad would be updated 6 months before normal.

If in the past 3 days, almost certainly, mstrmac. But are u sure there's a worthwhile difference ?
And is the new iPad available in stores ? Not likely.

I think Apple figured this one out years ago. They have pre-orders announced for shipment beyond 14 days from announcement. Here is the Apple Return Policy page. Terms are 'within 14 days' (or 30 days for iPhone). So an iPadv3 purchased this past week can be returned (with receipt) to Apple. Pocket the money and preorder iPadv4. Agree with comment about an exchange for products not yet in stores.

Save $ 230-340 with the "previous generation" , 27" model, vs. December model store.apple.com/us/product/FC813LL/ANote: this will come with wireless keyboard and mouse. I use only wired stuff. My own model is even older and perfectly functional.
