Well, three weeks of almost non-stop FBI/security drama seems to have sucked all the life out of any other Apple news or anticipation of the upcoming announcements, without seeming to affect the flow of FUD. Maybe having lowered expectations on the product side gives the stock some headroom if Tim and Co. do manage to come up with "one more thing" that spurs a bit of surprise and delight. Unfortunately, the bar has gotten set unbearably high, the curse of a storied past. I sometimes wonder if even announcing the iCar would get a favorable reaction these days.

It looks like the DOJ is just going to railroad Apple. You can't fight city hall and that just sucks.

This debate regarding Apple and encryption is by all accounts bi-partisian. There is no clear position from either side and your attempt , as usual to take a dig at "liberals" is misguided.

This debate regarding Apple and encryption is by all accounts bi-partisian. There is no clear position from either side and your attempt , as usual to take a dig at "liberals" is misguided. I believe you are correct about this. President Obama, Senator Dianne Feinstein and other so-called "liberal" persons in government support the FBI's position. U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, staunch Republican and the wealthiest member of Congress with a net worth of $357 million, appears to support Apple's position. As for the folks running for the Republican nomination for President of the United States, not a liberal in the group, all support the FBI's position. Ignorance of the importance of maintaining the security of encryption crosses all party lines. ================== www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/feb/25/rubio-cruz-support-fbi-apple-republican-debateIn Thursday’s Republican debate in Houston, the candidates were asked about Apple’s decision to defy an FBI request to disable a self-destruct mode on an iPhone, to comply with an investigation of the San Bernardino terror attack.
The FBI says it wants to access the phone as it investigates the allegedly Islamic State-inspired shooting in which 14 people were killed and more than 20 were injured. Apple’s stance has attracted support from campaigners against government surveillance. ### 1. “Apple doesn’t want to do it because they think it hurts their brand,” said the Florida senator Marco Rubio. “Well let me tell you their brand isn’t superior to the national security of America.” ### The 2.Texas senator Ted Cruz agreed, saying Apple should be required to comply with the search order because it applied to only one phone, not to all phones.
“On the question of unlocking this cellphone ... we should enforce the court order,” he said. “Apple doesn’t have a right.” ### 3. Ben Carson agreed, saying that if Apple did not comply with the FBI, “you’re encouraging chaos in our system”. ### Ohio governor John Kasich, meanwhile, turned blame for the standoff, which has landed in court, on President Obama.
“You know what the problem is,” he asked. “Where’s the president been?”
Kasich said the president should have “locked the door” on a meeting between the intelligence community and Apple until they found a compromise, and kept the whole thing out of the newspapers. ### 4. Donald Trump was not asked for his opinion*.### *Trump's opinion: www.theverge.com/2016/2/17/11031910/donald-trump-apple-encryption-backdoor-statement

A very good read about security and gov data access by an MIT team. Long and technical but really convincing.... should be a must read for POTUS ! Keys Under Doormats: mandating insecurity by requiring government access to all data and communications dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/handle/1721.1/97690/MIT-CSAIL-TR-2015-026.pdf?sequence=8The goal of this report is to similarly analyze the newly proposed requirement of exceptional access to communications in today’s more complex, global information infras- tructure. We find that it would pose far more grave security risks, imperil innovation, and raise thorny issues for human rights and international relations.

It looks like the DOJ is just going to railroad Apple. You can't fight city hall and that just sucks. If not DOJ, it will be another country's mandate that forces Apple's hand. Apple can't release a different version of the iPhone or iOS for each country to comply with its laws. If not Europe, China will demand Apple hand over the keys, if they haven't already. Apple and its customers are screwed. I think third party apps will become the key to secure encryption. Just like with file sharing, a cat and mouse game.
