Opening the weekend thread hoping to quell the political wrangling at the end of Friday's posts. Nice to get back to a green week, modest though it was. Perhaps unlike the local traders and chartists, I have no problem with this consolidation in the 140's. It will be interesting to see the results on May 2, especially, as I have mentioned before, given the almost total lack of news about the sales activity in China and the rest of the Far East during the quarter. It will certainly be interesting to see what effect the pending Fall iPhone releases have on results for the next 6 months. Apple Inc. Likely to Stay Ahead of Competition in Chip Manufacturing Tech examines the fairly astounding progress that Apple has made while bringing in-house what is turning out to be a very important key to continuing functional and performance improvements across its products. Ewan Spence has his usual sour view of challenges and possible pitfalls for the new iPhone lineup, but I am not going bother linking to it. I do not like the idea of the fingerprint sensor moving to the back of the phone, however. How Apple Is Building an Ecosystem of Health Care and Research Apps is a good comprehensive view of the various programs within Apple that demonstrate this to be a serious bet for the future. If nothing else, the population bubble of aging Boomers (raises hand) should be a fertile market wanting to reap possible benefits from these activities. There has been too much of winter carry-over into April here in New England, but Chris Sale continues to warm the hearts of Red Sox fans and keep us eager for summer fun at Fenway Park.

Very good run this year for AAPL, only 3 Fridays ending down for the week. As with all ER's this one will be the most important one.

US pre-market futures open with a gap +200 on the Dow and +23.50 on the S&P ... let's hope it stays this way thru the morning and drags AAPL up with it....Vive la France!

Would love to get back to $145 and beyond. Hard to say if the market is responding to the French run-off results, or the hope we might avoid a government shutdown, or something else entirely. It would be nice if the macro environment were somewhat stable when Apple reports.

I wouldn't hold my breath on anything macro being stable - possible gov't shut down, possible health care bill (weds? or thurs?), possible announcement on tax bill ... and that's just the U.S. - then throw in Syria, France, Brexit/snap election, and North Korea to mention but a few ... we will just need to learn to live with this for now unfortunately. Then again, this too shall pass.

Can't resist posting this about Bixby, Samsung's new AI assistant. From the Ars Technica review of the Samsung S8: "It's hard to get excited about Bixby because it's just nothing new, it's not good right now, and Samsung doesn't have the software or big data prowess to make it good. Bixby is just the latest app in a long line of copycat shovelware from Samsung."arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/04/samsung-galaxy-s8-review-shiny-new-hardware-meets-old-software-habits/The Good A slim-bezel design finally brings a more modern design to the Galaxy line. On-screen buttons allow for smaller bezels, bigger screens, and a customizable (and correctable) button order. Samsung's always-on hard-press home button is an awesome and innovative feature. Samsung Pay combination of NFC and MST still makes it the best and most-compatible smartphone payment system. The camera hasn't changed much but is still great. Timely monthly security updates (for your old version of Android). The Bad The gimmicks. The iris scanner, curved screen, and heart rate sensor all seem designed to give talking points to your local Verizon salesperson, rather than provide a good user experience for customers. The glass back is fragile and a fingerprint magnet. Touchwiz is still a janky lag-fest. Despite the faster processor, the Google Pixel is a smoother, faster-feeling device. No support for an always-on "OK Google" hotword for the Google Assistant. Samsung blocks users from remapping the Bixby hardware key. No adoptable storage for the MicroSD card. The Ugly Samsung takes five to seven months to deliver a major OS update. After the initial launch period, expect to be perpetually one to two versions behind the latest Android release.
