Can someone explain how Apple might monetize passbook in the future? Seems if they are affiliating transactions there is an opportunity to "skim" transaction fees a la credit cards? Or maybe not?
Or maybe if it gains critical mass Apple can charge retailers for the right to use it? This doesn't see likely to me though. Apple should want every retailer to use it so charging may not make sense. It also doesn't seem like Passbook is powerful enough to shift market share in retailers like iPhone did with carriers so I'm not sure they could charge for it anyhow.

I have never really felt Apple wanted to charge for stuff like that. Kind of just a bonus for buying the device. Yes Apple has 400 million customers, don't want to nickel and dime them.

I'll agree with Mark. Passbook apps are strictly an ecosystem enhancement, not a revenue source.
My ideal in this arena is entirely different: the Apple Worldwide Credit Unions.
