New iPod Touch - www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/05/new-ipod-touch-delivers-even-greater-performance/I just read somewhere (probably a comment on social media) that Apple is just doing this to "goose sales because sales of iPhones is slowing". That may well be true in part, BUT I have a good sense of *why* they finally released this product. I read that kids as young as 7 have been getting smartphones (I think that's nuts, our 13-14 year olds still don't have phones, but the older teens do), but that in most cases, parents can't really get them an iPhone due to cost, so they either get them an older iPhone or an Android of some sort. Now, kids as young as 7 don't travel anywhere on their own, except to school where they have WiFi and aren't allowed to use their phones during class time anyway. So this may be a really good, cheap, "gateway drug" to the Apple ecosystem for that cohort.

I think Gruber at daringfireball.net nailed it: "In the early years, I think a lot of iPod Touches were sold for use by kids. But today, most kids use hand-me-down iPhones. I think a lot of new iPods Touch are sold for enterprise purposes — warehouse scanning, point-of-sale, that sort of thing." No camera or screen upgrades. Nothing really for most kids to get excited about. Nothing but CPU upgrade, and even that a modest but capable one. Handheld CC canners and warehouse work. Think about it. We don't know sales numbers, but probably more than we think because we're not warehouse or retail managers. It's today's cheap workhorse computer. No frills but gets the job done at $199.00 Welcome to the 21st century. You know when I read this this morning and given WWDC in less than a week, I couldn't help but think of the comedy of Cook introducing an iPod touch upgrade on stage. Drop it from the ceiling slow like Stonehenge figure in Spinal Tap concert. Now that would be funny. would have been

On every airplane ... the flight attendants are carrying a phone of some sort (connected to Wifi) to process anything from purchases, to complaints, to helping with rebookings, to granting extra airline points for various things, etc.
