China Blinks as Asian Markets Tank, Seeks 'Calm' End to Trade War townhall.com/tipsheet/leahbarkoukis/2019/08/26/china-blinks-as-asian-markets-tank-n2552169“China announced Monday it was looking for a “calm” end to the ongoing trade war with the United States. The change in tone comes after Asian markets tanked and China’s currency dropped to an 11-year low after the Trump administration’s most recent round of tariffs on $550 billion in Chinese goods. "We are willing to resolve the issue through consultations and cooperation in a calm attitude and resolutely oppose the escalation of the trade war," Vice Premier Liu He said Monday, according to Reuters. "We believe that the escalation of the trade war is not beneficial for China, the United States, nor to the interests of the people of the world."”

A longish piece on the future of Apple and R+D spend hereThanks for posting this. Lots of stuff to consider, but there are a number of areas that I find a bit curious: “Homepod was a failure; AI was a failure,” Ives said. There has been general agreement here about Homepod. I guess I must have missed what he is referring to in "AI was a failure," because I don't know what he means. "AirPods are nice, but it doesn't move the needle." Yet he earlier said wearables had a "blowout quarter." “Who is satisfied with their TV offering now? It is such a mess.” Did I miss the official launch? “It’ll never launch a hardware product that will come even close to the success that it has had with the iPhone,” Duh. Nor has anyone else. If that's your bar for success, of course you will be disappointed. The one thought in the article I do agree with is “The distinction between a consumer company and tech company is not really meaningful for a company like Apple,” Yoffie said.

DED responds (pretty well) to HomePod negativity with appleinsider.com/articles/19/08/26/editorial-after-taking-the-premium-tier-homepod-will-expand-in-markets-amazon-and-google-cant

“In reality, high volume sales of Androids have only helped to create the awareness of smartphones as a desirable consumer product. This created an installed base of consumers for Apple to offer its iPhones as an aspirational, premium tier upgrade” This is is a very insightful view of what happened in the mobile phone market. I’m pretty sure that the intelligent speaker doesn’t have anywhere the near the market potential of mobile phones. But then again, I have had quality sound components since right after college, and I am not enamored of talking to my devices, so I am probably not representative of the market as a whole. ”Like AirPods and Apple Watch, HomePod helps to keep iPhone users loyal to the iOS platform.” Bingo, but, and I suspect that like many AFB’ers, AAPL plays that role for me 😉.

“Unless Apple can pull off another iPod/iPhone/iPad megahit, its best days are gone.” 😳 derp.
