See above.
The very first thing I noticed is how they made Siri LESS pleasant than before.

Siri sounds a bit more mechanical, but her timbre is richer. My initial reaction was that I liked the new Siri better. After some comparisons, I like both in different ways. It's like comparing a blonde to a redhead or soprano to an alto voice. In any case, it's very subjective.
iOS 6 quick-takes: Siri is faster to load. Safari is faster; Reader loads much faster. I think Maps is better, at least for me. Turn-by-turn looks great. Maps is visually easier to view.

I updated my 4S and iPad 3 this afternoon. Observations: - Safari loads amazingly fast, even on 4S and iPad 3 (w/o the benefit of A6) - I liking having Siri on the iPad 3 - Maps seems okay so far, but no Flyover in Toronto, Canada so I really miss StreetView - Maps now has Apple stores as a prominent POI I like how I can tap on POIs on the map directly - I like the new privacy options and the option limiting targeted ads under "About->Advertising" - New Appstore layout looks amazing - Updating apps no longer requires iTunes password - Passbook is useless right now. I don't have anything that works in Passbook - iPhoto does NOT use the new Maps, looks like it's still OpenStreetMap in an ugly colour scheme - Videos app on iPad is missing an EDIT button at the top right corner, so deleting multiple videos at once takes more taps - Sync subscriptions for Podcasts is very useful - Sync notification center across devices is also very useful - The lock screen now comes "gradually on" when I wake up the phone using the home button on my 4S. I think that's new. - I wonder if "LED Flash for Alerts" would get disabled if Do Not Disturb is on? - Settings icon now has less pointy gears! (I've omitted some of the obvious and oft-repeated features out of the above list)

I just did a test, it looks like DND mode silences ALL alerts, even calendar alerts from Exchange and accessibility "LED flash for Alerts".
So if any of you use calendar alerts to wake up for work, please be careful with scheduling your DND mode!

Via MG Siegler: "...map usage is critical...more than half of GoogleÂ’s mobile map usage is going away in the next month or two...Usage makes maps better a lot faster than software does. GoogleÂ’s maps are going to start degrading. AppleÂ’s will get better. TheyÂ’ll meet in the middle within 18 months."
blog.lumatic.com/post/31863865686/ive-been-using-ios-6-for-a-few-months-and This assumption likely falls apart if Apple approves a Google maps app.

Which Apple may well do. Hello, moot point about Street View and transit! Safari is my #1 favorite improvement in iOS 6 so far.

We still need street view though, Flyover's coverage is nowhere near as extensive.

There has been a lot of blogosphere complaining about maps. On my iPhone 4 maps load quicker and so far seem to have more data than Google maps. I can't do flyover, but I never used streetview anyway. And Mav is right, Safari is snappier!

This assumption likely falls apart if Apple approves a Google maps app. Not entirely. How many iOS users will manually use such a Google map app every single time a map is called for? Aside from street view, I will probably be very happy to stick with the default map on my iPhone & iPad. Which is more likely, that Apple approves a maps app (remember they've approved Voice, G+ and YouTube) or that Google submits a maps app? I suspect Google would like to hold maps as a competitive advantage of Android over iOS, but they fear losing all that data. If Google submits a map app and Apple approves it, then iOS devices will have access to the best of both worlds. Android users will only have access to one.

Initial iOS 6 maps thoughts -
I take long road trips and need to have the ability to see detail when zoomed out while looking at macro maps, and when zoomed into micro/neighborhood maps. The Macro views are way too light on details beyond the major highways. This level of details doesn't work when on long road trips. Also, why does the satellite view feel "cartooney"? I'm used to Apple delivering a world class user experience. Apple Maps are not a world class user experience. I'm not sure this product would have passed Steve Jobs demanding level of quality. My opinion is that he would have demanded a higher quality product be delivered to exceed the customer experience and this one would not have been released had it needed to pass Steve's approval. Dang, I had so much more hope they would have delivered, dare I say it, Google quality maps....grrrrr, dang I'm disappointed.

Apple has a suggestion box. You could also email Tim Cook about it.

I put over in Intraday. I should have just posted here. How to add Google Maps (via Safari shortcut) to your iOS 6 home screen: tinyurl.com/d6u3bmg or screenshots of 6 steps tinyurl.com/9ql7x8u1 Open Safari and go to maps.google.com. 2 At the bottom of your screen, [touch] the Export button -- the curved arrow in the middle of the menu bar. 3 Touch Add to Home Screen. 4 Touch the Add button on the top-right corner of your screen. This will create a Safari shortcut to Google Maps on your home screen. You can, of course, move shortcut anywhere you want on your home screen by touching and holding the icon until all the app icons appear to "wiggle." Then drag the icons in whatever order you desire.

Scout by Telnav (free year of Scout ends on Friday, September 21st) I didn't skipped registering and still got the free year and the offline maps. itunes.apple.com/us/app/scout-by-telenav/id467816643?mt=8spoken turn by turn directions, traffic rerouting, lane assist, speed trap and red light camera alerts, and offline navigation.
When you download and launch Scout Plus for the first time, please register or sign in with your name and a valid email address.
After doing this, the first and primary option you will see is a button to select “Get Scout Plus FREE for 1 Year” (SEE RIGHT). Please select this option. Once you have done so, you will automatically receive Scout Plus for one year, free of charge.

Ask him to split the stock as well while you're at it. I think he will at some point within the next 12-18 months, if not sooner. It's just a hunch, but considering how downright "friendly" Cook is to AAPL shareholders (which, of course, includes Apple employees and execs)...

I can concur that the Apple maps is terrible. I use maps quite a bit and tonight wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Usually I just enter number, street, city in Google maps and it gets it right 100% of the time.
With Apple maps I entered number, street, city ,and zip and I only got a 60% success rate. It threw me into a completely different city that was not in the same zip code I explicitly typed. It lets you enter a bug report which I did and put the pin at the right location.
One can only hope there is a VP somewhere channeling the former founder to the maps team about the what we expect from Apple.
Other than maps so far iOS 6 is good!

Reminder: Apple is not WHAT WOULD STEVE DO, INC.
They are now DO WHAT IS RIGHT, INC.
Apple does fail and iMaps has definite deficits. Their challenge is to improve iMaps every single damn day. That is, after all, what is right.

Yes agreed Apple is a company on its own, but the persona of the company for years has been this is the company that Steve built. Only in the last couple years did they try to change that image.
For the general consumer on the biggest phone sellout yet if something is amiss immediately the visionary lost is the reason and the company lost its way. If Apple can fix it quickly as they have in the past the maps issue will be a non-issue. Google PR has already begun smirking noting their App still works and is awaiting approval.
I looking out for four digit share price sooner than later.

Good!
The visionary screwed up too while at Apple. MobileMe was allowed to fester for quite a while...remember, it was .Mac from 2002 and iTools from before that. Visionaries are allowed to fail now and then and so are companies run by caretaker CEOs - which I think is a completely inaccurate.
Apple doesn't suffer criticism lightly. This is fuel for them to keep improving Maps, and we'll see how they do over the next weeks and months.
As to: "For the general consumer on the biggest phone sellout yet if something is amiss immediately the visionary lost is the reason and the company lost its way" - this belongs as more of an investment deal, but if someone who thinks this is long AAPL ans isn't trimming AAPL because of this, you obviously don't see this as much of a problem. And no, "it's not a problem...YET" is not a reason to not trim. You'd start trimming right that second if that's what you truly believed.
