While I'm sure there are some legitimate mapping errors in the Apple map app, I believe this negative spin machine could very well be the product of Google. Especially after Schmit's comments and the fact that Google certainly knows how to make news stories, comments, posts, etc. get maximum viewing on the internet.

Any insights on this....
I entered directions on iOS6 Maps app on my iPhone, and it routed me to the Apple App store to buy an App from a selection of 20 routing Apps...The useful ones cost $50! WTFIUWT?

Looking at the satellite images in Apple Maps, I'm quite surprised at how recent some of the data is. Flying over the Olympic Stadium in East London, the preparations within the stadium for the opening ceremony can be clearly seen. I am starting to think this is a load of crap put out by Google. I love the ability to turn the image. The image is more recent, green grass and on my ipad, beautiful. The image on the Google map shows no leaves on the trees and the grass is brown. Someone please tell me why this is not across the headlines. Granted, it is still and old picture from Apple, but at least it is in sync with the season. I tell you what is funny, I am doing a side by side comparison and the Google map put the red pin 2 houses away. To funny. The ability of Google to get this story out before people even have a chance to use it should wake people up. The media is just there to manipulate the population. Nothing else.

WTFIUWT? To add clarity, the directions I entered where: Starting in Detroit Lakes, Mn > Ending in Winona, Mn. I would consider this not an exotic request, but since this is flyover land, maybe it is.

I used the maps this evening and was very impressed. The phone being synced to the car using the maps was pretty cool. It would lower the music down and SIRI would give directions. One thing I was really impressed with was the upcoming roads feature.
Also, I did not even enter an address, I just typed in the name of the restaurant and selected it when it showed up in the list. First impression of Apple's map APP is very positive. I know I am sounding like a homer, but most of you know that I am far from that. One girl at dinner had a new iphone. To be honest, it is to light. I can easily tell the difference. People are going to lose these things.

Throw a case and a screen protector on it. That'll help add weight. To slam Maps is to ignore navigation. The navigation interface is slick. With time and refinement (and reminding Siri to pipe audio through Bluetooth), it'll only get more and more formidable.

This is a problem. No thoughts? No comments?

Just tried it on my iPad (New version), directions worked fine for the same search. Problem is with the iPhone 4 and iOS6. Tried it on both of our iPhone 4's, and same result of being routed to the App store to purchase a navigation App..

If all fails give Apple support a call. I couldn't sync photo's to my new phone and a support guy in the iPhoto group found the issue. Turned out there was a random ampersand applied in one of the song titles that was used in a slideshow. Apple support is awesome and a very real differentiator from the rest of the competitors regardless of which industry they may occupy.

Sounds like you have the public transportation option selected (the bus icon). Tap the arrow to start directions and look at the 3 center icons at the top.

Finally restored my jailbroken 4S to stock and installed iOS 6. Maps and voice nav works great so far. I'll test it more this weekend. I really think this maps fuss is on the same level as antenna-gate. Yes, it does affect some people, but it will not affect overall iPhone 5 sales or iOS 6 adoption.

Drew, that is what I was saying last night, I think it is a very good product and will get better quickly.

CNBC mobile app this morning says "Apple to apologize to customers over iOS 6 maps", story developing Here is what Tim Cook said: "To our customers, At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better. We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up. There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you. While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app. Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard. Tim Cook Apple’s CEO "

Why doesn't AAPL just buy Waze and put everyone out of their misery and move on? Our family always used Waze and my kids told me about it early on. When I asked them about their disappointment on GOOG maps and their iPhone 5s they said they don't use GOOG they use Waze.
Today is really a cluster#@*# day. Hard to believe we launched last Friday and find ourselves in this position today. This is just stupid in so many ways.

Seriously, I gave iOS 6 turn-by-turn a try and immediately went back to Waze. Apple's turn-by-turn just feels too plain for me having used Waze for a long while.

With over 120 BILLION in cash this lack of foresight from Apple is really inexcusable. What is the point of all that cash ? The CEO of WAZE was just on CNBC ... there is always the possibility that Apple did try but maybe WAZE was simply unwilling to bite. That was the case with Dropbox from what I understand. If that's not the case .... TC needs to step up his game. Is it really that hard to understand the reactions to this mapping problem ? How could Apple not realize this was going to be a problem ? This is really disturbing to me as a long-term investor.

I understand the logic - and agree - but the execution was wrong - in particular it's timing - again, my opinion.

Someone just tweeted this and made me laugh out loud...and boy, isn't it the truth:
"Steve Jobs would've said: Maps don't work? Sure they do! You just don't know how to use them!" ~ and we would have all believed him.
