I’m not going to pretend that that I know enough about the massive manufacturing complexities at iPhone volumes, to confidently say I would do something differently. However, at the time of iPhone intro, I am convinced that Apple had no other viable choice than China. No where else had the required supply chain capability, nor an adequate labor pool. People have mentioned Mexico. I say no way. Not at iPhone volumes.
To me, it feels like Apple has taken too long to reduce the China dependency. But I have insufficient visibility to be confident in that feeling. I just know it has to be incredibly complicated. Well beyond any outsiders ability to comprehend. It’s easy to be a critic as an outsider with almost zero visibility into all the challenges and complexities.

The reality is that it matters little what we on this board think about Apples China entanglement, but it does matter what Mr. Market thinks about it. And this past week is an example. Thankfully, Mr. Market suffers from ADD.

The point is I can't remember which finger I used. The middle finger is universally understood around the world . . . 😁 Yeah, good...but was that left or right? That is why face recognition works better for me.

You are still dodging the real question. This story is about damage to iPhone sales volumes. Which are extremely significant. What do you think he should actually do about this threat to sales volume? Not be in that market at all? Is selling product in China your definition of a “wrong decision?” When Chairman Xi came to power, China started to change. The open for business policy that was in place before Xi started to get twisted into more of the classic communist paranoid power grab. As it started to become more and more obvious that country was being taken into a state of one man rule and Cook should have started to minimize the companies manufacturing exposure and dependance to this dictators newest and unexpected whim. But instead he continued to invest even more in this power keg of a nation. So what do you think will happen to Apples production of iPhones if China decides to move on Taiwan? It isn't the loss of iPhone sales in China that is the problem. It's that the country is being controlled by someone that can make the type of decisions such as banning a brand of cell phone. So now, do you approve with everything that Tim Cook has done with relation to China, or would you have done something different? After all, if I remember correctly, you also have some manufacturing exposure to China. Europe seems to also have inordinate power over cellphones and over large tech companies. They seem to have seized the power to tell companies how to design their products in some respects (for example, what type of data/charging port must be used).
