Ok. FUD has been corrosive, and the Mapgate, Scuffgate and Wifigate (I am artfully appropriating here) have the stock and some investors depressed (like me). But there is a silver lining to this - It. Will. Pass. Maps will get better, WiFi will get fixed, Scuffs, maybe not much - so buy a freaking cover! Let the bears load up, let the timers pick their entries. The iPhone is solid - it actually is a better phone for making calls (I am feeling a little better now). We may have another sales number from Apple when they roll out the second tier this Friday or the following Monday. We have a lot of phones intransit that have not been counted. We have earnings coming and after the analysts missed the number, they will probably be gun-shy and under-estimate numbers of phones sold and earnings. We may have an iPad mini and a Mac update coming this quarter. We have a new non-fragmented iOS that nobody is knocking in the press (Yeah, that makes sense to me!). The cloud over AAPL right now is going to move on, the analysts will re-calibrate (and miss again), and AAPL will appreciate (Ok, now I am looking for coins under the cushions to go buy a weekly!). Just sayin'.

Seems like analysts were struggling with the same questions we had here regarding units sold.
Gene Munster: "Our 8 million estimate assumed full weekend availability and the counting of all online pre-orders. We believe that if supply were not a constraint and Apple included all pre-orders, the launch weekend number would have been closer to 7-8 million, assuming ~1 million October pre-order sales and an additional 1-2 million units at retail."
Brian Marshall: "We expected 6-8 million over the opening weekend … The 5mil+ iPhone 5 reported sales only takes into consideration: 1) what was sold into partners (e.g., retail outlets, carriers, etc.), 2) sold in AAPL retail stores, and 3) direct to customers only if they signed for the device. Importantly, this doesn’t take into consideration units in delivery direct to customers (i.e., AAPL must have signature of acceptance by customer before it is counted as a sale) and we estimate units in transit could be in the millions currently. We believe the negative pre-market action in AAPL (i.e., down ~2%) is an over-reaction and would be buyers of the stock here."

Scott Redler just tweeted:
"Foxconn back online after one day should help with supply issues for $AAPL. $683 support then $676-$679. Resistance $695 then $700-$705"

In a stunning display of stupidity, it appears Eric Schmidt has been giving plenty of interviews telling everyone that google does NOT have an iOS app to submit to apple, and that "it was up to apple whether or not they used us". Literally hundreds of millions of users have suddenly stopped using google maps after upgrading to iOS 6. To not have a native app or at least a feature complete web version for iOS is simply a terrible business move. Good for apple of course

Maybe they were right, maybe not but my gut tells me that there is a great deal of hubris involved there.

Exactly this reaction by Google (don't be evil) is the reason Apple is abandoning Google Maps and starts building it's own map. I fully understand, but with Apple's deep pockets I would expect them to deliver something superior (or buy something).

You are spot on - I do question why they didn't buy something more robust before launching. I don't care how you cut it - all this negative publicity is marring the maps product for a while...and after phone calls and texting - maps seems to be one of the most fundamental functions of a smart phone.

I know they had a iOS 6 beta for developers, but maybe a good move would have been to release 'iMaps' as a beta to the general public earlier in the year running on iOS 5, so they could have had million of testers correcting map errors without complaints (because its a beta), while still having the old google based maps as backup until the switchover to iOS 6.
Oh well, too late now - I'm sure the major errors will be fixed ASAP.

Does anyone anticipate that TC will make any announcement about the international roll out and what might get sold there. This time around the roll out is larger and bigger so I don't know what to expect from the company as far as any communication with the general public.

I also thought that the iOS map issue is one that would quickly be corrected. However, you might want to read the following blog Apple Mapsby Mike Dobson of TeleMapics. Based on his analysis, Apple must act quickly to correct the mismatch among the many map sources they employ. Hopefully, they already are increasing their human resources in their mapping efforts.

And what is the anticipated (I realize not announced yet) date of earnings release if anyone had to make an educated guess here?

My mother-in-law, age 93 and living independently and still driving (yikes!), started to get interested in the market so we opened an account for her. Every three months she gets an insurance rebate of some kind, of $300, to put into her account. The first time, I got the sense that she wanted to 'compete' with me because she knows that I am bullish on apple. She didn't want any advice and bought 10 shares of FB @ $27. Since that day she checks the prices of FB & AAPL and writes down the prices on a sheet of note paper. The next quarter she decided that she would hold her $300 and save it for another 3 months so she might invest in aapl. (I had hopes at that time of being able to help her place a limit order under $600.) I'm guessing she is now saving up another $300 so she can buy sometime this fall.
We went out to eat this past Sunday and told me that she is still tracking the prices everyday and noticed that aapl was going higher and higher. She said I was a financial genius! I didn't have the heart to tell her that I knew of some really smart and helpful people ( i.e., YOU GUYS). Ain't that a hoot, 93 and long on AAPL!!
In any case, thanks for being here.
Aloha, WEC

Good morning boys and girls! Sorry sponge I'm taking your call sign.
I noticed that the overwhelming majority here are option players with very few trading common stock. I for one am new to the market and so far only buy common. Right now I own a small amount (120 shares) which is chump change for many of you, but I'm learning. I'm only 26 and have no debt, wife, and have a good job so I have the opportunity to undertake more volatile positions. I am not interested in weeklies or monthlies, but LEAPS. From what I understand LEAPS are a nice halfway house between common and typical options (without the dividend). Is options express a good site to trade LEAPS? Do most of you wait for a pull back to initiate your option positions, or does it not matter as much with LEAPS?
Thanks for your time

Based on the date and the Bloomberg article on screen supply constraints it's looking like 10M might be good guess.

Updated impressions of the iPhone 5:
First performance. Everything Apple is always snappier. Snappier doesn't describe the performance boost. Better connections. Fewer dropped calls. This is not a function of LTE as I live in an area without AT&T LTE coverage. In fact, since my house is in a dead zone, I have a personal cell. For several days AT&T couldn't get the personal cell working leaving me with a single bar. With the iPhone 4 I would have completed few calls. Not so with the 5.
The new cable is fantastic. No up, down, right, wrong. I can plug it in while driving without looking. True I can't plug it into my legacy devices, but Apple: Why didn't you introduce this sooner...
For me maps a big improvement. To date I've only used it locally, but it pinpoints my location with a far greater degree of accuracy than google maps ever did. This is particularly useful for turning when you can't read the street signs and on unmarked roads. I'm becoming reliant on it to the point of when the map shows me at the right intersection I turn. Speaking of turns, the turn by turn instructions are a welcome addition. Finally, the maps much easier to use. They are more readable and less cluttered. I'll be traveling in the next couple of weeks. We'll see how it works in other states (Colorado and New Hampshire). That said, if I were Google, I wouldn't be throwing stones. The weekend before IOS 6 was released I was in Pennsylvania and Google Maps had me turn the wrong way in a small town.
I haven't noticed any issues with WiFi.
The settings are starting to get overwhelming. It's becoming hard to find where to turn things on and off. It does't help when Apple places "Do Not Track" under General > About > Advertising instead of under Privacy. Hopefully, Apple will reorganize and simplify the setting structure in a near future iteration.
I would have appreciated better integration across iOS devices, e.g. airplay. I would like to be able to play my iPhone iTunes library through my Apple TV (surround sound system) rather than firing up the computer...

Pullback, definitely. The hard part is watching AAPL go up and missing out, which is why I like shares instead of cash while waiting. The other hard part is deciding on how much of a pullback to wait for.

podboy, Options Express is fine. Previously I used Scottrade, but I believe that OX has a better layout overall. OX is slower to load.
