Am I the only one who thinks this iTunes design revamp is disappointing? It's blah. I post this ahead of WWDC and rumors that iOS7 will go heavy on Black and White.

Nice post, JD.
I do have limited experience with writing calls against shares, so I have some familiarity with the pros and cons.
Minis make it possible for those of us with tens of shares, or only the willingness to potentially have tens of shares called away, to participate in income strategies, though obviously not at the same magnitude.
I'm just thinking out loud about other theta-focused strategies (of which bear call spreads are) that don't involve as much capital. Of course, lower capital pretty much equates to higher risk. As iPad said, requires a higher options approval level. And yes, the credit to start can get ugly if AAPL hops on the momo train and turns your credit into a debit.
OTOH, that starts as a game of hundreds (putting yourself on the hook for up to $500 at a time (per vertical) in AAPL's case), doesn't require share ownership and can work if you're smart or lucky with pain range calculations, technicals, whatever. Like anything, one should understand it and even paper trade it before trying it. Might be something used sparingly, say around monthly OpEx in slow news periods where that tractor beam may be more predictable.

Mercel, think Ive will either take the stage or appear in an iOS 7 preview video at WWDC?
I don't think we need to be too worried about black and white and dullness everywhere else. One need look no further than Ive's design record at Apple. Color is no issue for him (iPod, first-gen iMac, G3/G4 minitowers), he's gone plenty of matte but also glossy/lustrous (Chamfers? Why? Because! Also almost every display border Apple makes) and lately he's ventured into the "useless jewelry" space with the colored glass trim on the back of iPhone 5 (meticulously matched, functionally pointless).
There's also the "toilet seat" iBook as an example of expressive design but I'm sure Ive doesn't really talk about that phase much. ;D

Thanks for the reminder of the earlier color splash that marked the return of Apple 2.0. I bought one of those iMacs. In fact, it was the Graphite SE model (the irony here...).
If Ive was ever going to take the stage, it would be at WWDC and I'm placing odds at 70/30 he will. Forstall was a regular presence at WWDC and Ive is actually excellent on the charisma meter.
I didn't like the early iBook, but I LOVED the Pismo -- wished I had kept mine as a future collectible. The Apple 1 just sold for over $600k for those blinking at the thought of keeping old gear.

Hopefully the Turkish government officials responsible for acquiring tablets has been informed of this school's dramatic turn around.

Not even going to bother rebutting Pogue's S4 review - there are many of the same problems from the get-go. It's even inconsistent with the S3 review, though that might be because of some need to "blend in" due to the near-universal "well it's improved over the S3, but it isn't quite what I was looking for this generation" tenor of other reviews out there.

I sit somewhere in the middle. Certainly there are more than a few useless gimmicks (e.g. tilt to zoom) but there are some things I would find useful. Prime example would be the ability to turn on Bluetooth as soon as I enter my car, and turn it off when I leave it. I would call this a hugely convenient feature to many users - hardly a gimmick. Now, the circuit stickers may not be the best way to solve the problem, but it's a problem I would like solved, and if this was offered on iOS I would certainly use it, as it beats doing it manually every time. Apple certainly does need to beef up some basic "nice-to-haves" that other platforms are offering.

The point of iTunes is that it is the delivery system for the content it contains, it is not to compete with that content for your attention. With the flatter, black and white look, the content stands out, as it should, with iTunes taking a subdued second seat for your attention.

Flickr, Tumblr, Hulu.
Monetizing? Don't mean to sound super-skeptical. But I do wonder. And Yahoo "only" has about $3B in cash to spare (or is it about $2B after Tumblr), though of course it wouldn't have to spend 100% cash on any deal.

I'm sorry, but I still don't see a big need for a keyboard. Apple's virtual keyboard is plenty stout enough for what I do, and that's the point I think. You can create with the iPad, but its primary function is consumption. The addition of more, and more, robust keyboards just move you closer, and closer, to the MacBook Air. The 'big' Air has a more powerful processor, more memory, and a larger screen (and might weigh less), for less than the 'big' cellular iPad Retina display plus keyboard.

If the bidding got intense, I could see Apple doing something with Yahoo, that included a paid up 5 year "license" for something unique, that would bolster Yahoo's bidding ability.

They look indecisive to me, given that we don't resume trading until Tuesday. What am I missing?

Futures are flat in the USA (very slight green, or lime color). No worries.

Nikkei was CRAZY red on Thursday but the US markets just shrugged it off for the most part.
AAPL doesn't seem to care where the (US) broader markets are these days. That's a good thing in my book.

EWJ, the Japan index ETF, is down 6%+ since Thursday. Still up 16% YTD. But it shows how much faster the elevator down can be than the stairs up.

Well, EWJ (which is very lightly traded) seeks to get -2x returns, so that kind of volatility is to be expected.

Irony is Apple going with more square icons, thereby sorta infringing on Samsung's square icon infringement. Or something.
SimplyZesty breaks my iPhone 5. Work on your mobile coding guys!

Apple won't adopt the square icon but the rest looks good. A splash of color goes a long way against B&W, but the gray in the image above is harder to make attractive. If Apple rolls out more of this gradient gray stuff, I'll be looking into jailbreaking my iPhone -- and I never considered that before.

Mercel, don't let the chatter get to you. Look again at the WWDC invite: Note: NOT MONOCHROME But yes, I freely admit that the monochrome-ness of OS X Mail and iTunes is bothersome.
