Couple of thoughts from today. Best post Steve keynote by far. Even Tim seems to be growing (getting more comfortable) in the role. I knew that Jony Ive was a Dieter Rams fan but it appears he has a bit of a Massimo Vignelli bent as well. If Phil's "Apple doesn't innovate anymore...,my ASS!" isn't someone's lead tech headline tomorrow I'll be really bummed. Lastly I've not had a chance to read many comments on the intertubes re: the new pro but I've seen it called donut, trash can, etc. When I first saw the image I had an OMG moment and this thought..., Honey, I shrunk the Cray! A Mac Pro that's smaller than an iMac is pretty crazy. (Schiller's "lingering attachment" (?) to FireWire "2" was mildly amusing.)
Can't wait to see one in person (probably closer to the end of the year).
In the meantime, I see various tech pundits continuing to weave this grand narrative of the (anticipated) fall of Apple years in advance. Topolsky, for instance. Childish (new design) vs. overwrought (I mean Corinthian leather, come on). "Lesser designer" (considering this is Ive we're talking about, I'm reminded about Jobs on critics - what have you done that's so great?). Going to Twitter for snark, as if it carries weight. Of course, the Verge DOES carry a bunch of Samsung ads. Just sayin'.
Oh, and when Apple and iOS are but a Blackberry-esque shell, the keys to its downfall might include - "no customizable homescreen widgets, no gesture-based Swype-style keyboards, no hands-on control over an apps' system usage — and both the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 have camera apps with more powerful editing tools." (NBC, Rosa Gojilan blog post) It's impossible to make this tripe up.
EDIT: Add Ryan Block to the Bozo Brigade: Apple, defensive branding? Aside from that being perfectly logical for even Apple-type companies to do...what was the iPod Silhouette deal all about? Or, the iPad 2 ad (y'know, "technology is not enough"?) two years ago? "Wow, Apple, you're so touchy when you express your corporate values/identity!"

Apple really knows how to put on a show. Other than the momentary bobble by the two guys from Anki, the presentation was flawless. And even the bobble was charming. Think for a moment now about the presentations from Microsoft and Samsung. Apple's presentations are incomparable, like a Steven Spielberg film showing next to something from a big-thumbed home video guy.

Also liking Apple's more assertive side during these keynotes. Schiller's line (you know, the one with the Mac Pro? ;D) is a great example of Apple's readiness to suit up against anyone.

Just watched the opening "ad" for the third time. It gets more powerful every time. Anyone think Apple run this as a TV ad (with the Apple logo at the end instead of "designed by Apple in California)? It doesn't showcase a product but it really connects Apple the brand with what a consumer desires.

Well I've installed iOS 7 on my iPhone 5 this afternoon...the restore was a little buggy, but so far everything seems to be working great and I'm loving the new layout already. I wonder when the Safari update will come to PC, cause I really like the Keychain feature and it'd be quite handy with the iPad, iPhone and PC.

No way. It's too defensive. (/RyanBlock)
To me, it's beautiful. Hard to square with Tim Cook being some operations guy who doesn't have the vision that Steve does, huh. If nothing else, it shows Tim really, really gets Apple, and that's what's always been most important.
It's hard to compress that first ad for TV, but I'm sure it'll get around. YouTube and all that, after all.

Mac Pro will be slightly smaller than some one-gallon Coleman jugs. Shorter and thinner than the height/width dimensions of a standard-size sheet of paper. Now, I'm a dedicated iMac user, but still.
Oh, and it _appears_ from the Mac Pro preview page that all four banks of RAM (aw, 64GB of RAM max? That's it?) are user-replaceable, for whatever that's worth.

After playing around with iOS 7 for a few hours, I thought I'd throw out my thoughts...
- I like the new look. A lot of it comes across as different but clearly superior, like the new lock screen. Some of it comes off as different and disorienting, like the settings app was for me, but I imagine that just takes a little getting used to.
- There is a ton of white spaced used throughout. I think that's the primary reason so many of the screen shots are shown on white iPhones.
- There are a number of little new features that didn't get any airtime. Things like the compass app now has a level built in, and other minor bonuses.
- The one area where I miss the skeuomorphism is in the green road signs from the turn-by-turn directions. For all the complaints of the new maps, I always liked the look of them. Like everything else, the new look is much simpler.
- I'm using a 4S and some of the transitions seem quite sluggish. I'm sure a lot of that will be improved by the time it ships to the public. I think it's important for everything to be extremely snappy because seeing something that looks simpler, but is slower, could give a bad first impression.
- I've used early builds in the past and I've come to expect crashes and unstableness. I actually haven't had any app crashes yet, but I have seen a number of bugs. Things like I deleted a picture I just took and it deleted the wrong picture in my camera roll. I haven't seen bugs to that degree in early builds before. I have no doubt any bugs of those magnitude will be fixed soon though.

Gruber hasn't had THAT much time with iOS 7 yet (no one has), but if Ive really has brought a big dose of cohesiveness to iOS 7, it's gonna be one heck of a holiday season. Just wait until Jony gets a full year to work on this. He also respects what works fine, which is just as important as that continual drive for "something new" which can easily go too far. Speaking of something new, how's Android 5 coming along, Google? Any updates? What next version of Android? Nobody upgrades anyway. In keeping with their naming protocol it could be called Baked Alaska. Or half baked? Mavericks, huh? Well, get ready to be blamed for everything... It's not that nobody upgrades, it's that they generally CAN'T upgrade. That's because there are literally hundreds of different Android phones and it is impossible to develop and test upgrades for all of them.

Yeah, as if there wasn't enough reason to pile on the AFB Class Clown, now Apple has to name OS X perilously close to my username. ;D If you think OSX Mav is bad, the alternative was OSX Grumpy Chinacat. And don't even get Red started on the fact that we now have a Ferengi doing software demos.

Maybe _this_ is why offline Siri and as-you-speak features could take a while? Use Mac as a test platform, start with 800-ish MB and pare down from there? 9to5mac.com/2013/06/10/os-x-mavericks-allows-for-offline-dictation-and-live-feedback/On the bright side, that's a big value add for the OS X side of the equation (btw, could you ever see yourself buying a Mac Pro, JD?), considering how much Nuance products cost and how relatively little Mavericks is likely to cost. If it doesn't break some key apps, count me in!

I was impressed with everything there, loved the iOS update and that they finally are doing something with iWork. The only thing that disappointing part for me was no AppleTV SDK. There has to be a good reason for this. I have a couple I will share when I have more time. It obviously can't happen without new hardware because the current Apple TV set top box has neither the storage (all 8GB is used for OS, stock apps & media caching) or Power (underclocked single core A5 is restrictive for advanced 1080p app output).

WWDC rocked. The Mac Pro is sublime, really. iOS7 delivered (as did Federighi). The design aesthetic is better than expected. Yahoo's great weather app (which won a "Best of" award) was an early appetizer for the full meal deal.
Curiously, the screen shots of icons and home screen look better on Apple's site than what I saw on stage (Jim Dalrymple's reaction was the same -- anyone else?). Perhaps the background selected for the event wasn't the optimal choice? The calendar just knocked BusyCal out of the park. The translucent screens and the keychain and notification syncs are great. Overall, big improvements with form and function.
Hah. Siri kicks Google to the curb and takes Bing for a dance. And newspapers on the big screen? The New York Times was relegated to the bird cage. The Washington Post gets front page treatment this time.
No new MacBook Pros means we'll get an extra event alongside new iMacs. I want more events -- give it six weeks or less.
Only disappointment: Lack of Apple TV SDK. I believe what Apple has planned fits the "new product category" and warrants its own event. This fall or bust
iRadio sounds great -- ad free for iTunes match subscribers. Only U.S. launch for now...
The Ive/Federighi tandem show what true collaboration can achieve. This is John Lennon and Paul McCartney, not Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.

That new product categories deal isn't the Mac Pro, so there may be hope for something interesting in the Apple TV space yet this year. ;D Not all of iOS's buttons and icons make sense or look like positive changes (Game Center as blobs... yeah), but the key is core usability. And there, I'm guessing most users shouldn't have too steep a learning curve, though I'm betting Apple's got some reassurance because of the userbase's willingness to upgrade every year - which I guess isn't _too_ hard when it's free. Aside from the Offline Siri Unicorn, I really wish Apple would finally throw in an iPhone multi-touch method of accessing the multitasking bar.

Let's keep it to touch to unlock and iCloud keychain management, thank you very much. Which would be awesome, but we'll see if Apple can work it in this year.

Incidentally, one can download iOS7 now if you're willing to pay $99 for a one year enrollment. I think I might have to do this. See the link below. developer.apple.com/programs/ios/

Hmm. MacBook Air upgrade prices got a bit less stupid!
$100 to move up to 8GB of RAM is merely bad vs. horrific, and depending on the quality of Apple's flash storage, $300 to upgrade from 256GB to 512GB is actually not too far out of line.

With no retina on MBA at this stage, I'm staying put. The battery life under Haswell is remarkable. 12 hours on the 13" model is the next best thing to solar power. Not incidentally, early reaction among analysts is very solid. Also, even Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo, who never misses a chance to dump on Apple, praised iOS7. For a WWDC that didn't deliver iPhone 10, iPad 15 and a teleportation device, these reviews are encouraging. tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/06/10/apple-wwdc-2013-analysts/

Hey BillH, always nice of you to stop by.
No, I think we're talking two different things. I was just referring to Jony's statement about "redesigned, yet instantly familiar" or something like that. There shouldn't be too much adjustment for the majority of iOS 6 users. As for me, as long as iOS 7 doesn't tax the battery more than iOS 6, I'll be a happy camper...that is, if I don't end up getting the next iPhone beforehand.
I'm not sure _when_ the MBAs will go Retina at this point. Apple will probably be "forced" to by the competition eventually, but how can you manage screens with that many pixels, with an elevated power/GPU demand without really cutting into the current 9/12 hour battery life that the refreshed MBAs now have? That aside, I can see the MBAs selling pretty nicely for the rest of the year thanks to that near-absurd battery life. Wonder if Mavericks will actually improve the current battery life numbers.

I could be wrong on this, but my pathetic memory tells me that apple usually releases at least one mac refresh alongside the public release of each new version of OS X. Given that, I would expect new MacBook Pros to arrive alongside Mavericks.
