Net-net, I think Dilger's a very good Apple commentator, though he's always been a bit edgy. (Gruber, not as good as before it seems, though I still follow DF.) Dilger has had his issues but this last article is devastatingly well-sourced and factual. +1 Dilger is among the best and most prolific. He should be on CNBC instead of that wanker of an analyst, Glen "17M iPhones" Yeung at Citi.

Just went on Twitter to opine about iPhone LC/Performa. So very easy to tell when people don't know much about Apple's less illustrious history.

Hadn't thought of that! iPhone 5Clone! 5CheapKnockoff! (Better stick with C, so as to not get Calvin Klein involved too. ) One thing I'm pretty sure of, an iPhone 5-hardware class device will NEVER be in iPod touch-type packaging.

Has anyone else ever tried to download financial data from Amazon? I've struggled for two days attempting to download annual and quarterly data....it's almost like they don't want anyone looking. I don't blame them -- the company is one of the most overvalued stocks in the market today.
I was successful with annual data but the screen just goes blank on me with multiple requests for quarterly data. It doesn't exactly inspire much confidence in Amazon's cloud services...

Hmmmm....I did speculate on a possible name for the new cheap iPhone as possibly being based around its Color options, something like "iPhone Color" (or iPhone colour for the more civilised among us ). "iPhone 5C" sounds legitimate to me. The "5" designation lends a positive feeling to the device as being of the same breed as the iPhone 5 - a premium product line at present. And the "C" designation is in keeping with apples single letter descriptor for differentiation of models. The letter choice could be very similar to the "S" where it stood for multiple things (Speed, Siri), with "C" possibly implying Color, Cheaper, Choice & China - take your pick. I think it would be an odd name for a cloner or faker to put on a product, I haven't heard anyone suggest iPhone 5C as a name, more likely a cloner would use iPhone Nano, iPhone Mini, iPhone lite or iPhone Air. I actually do think Apple will package it like the iPod if they are going to focus on the Color options as a tentpole marketing feature. Plus some of the colors are less than subtle, I think its best people know exactly what the Color is like before they get it out of the box at home.

I don't see it.
iPhone 5C in non-aluminum plays up cheap, cost-saving, cynical, and a lack of camera/computer matched glass inlays.
Why not anodize the iPhone 5 and call it a day? No one minded the iPod mini. And iPod touch is also anodized aluminum.
New form factor (new case design counts IMHO), new name, I'm guessing.

Good article from Robert. Sums up a few points nicely. Nice catch about the lack of MacBook Pro update, if we had that I'm guessing we would of actually seen Mac shipment growth last quarter (that would have turned a good earnings report into a great one). But moving it into Q4 (this quarter) isn't too bad an idea, seeing as the year on year comparison is going to be rather tough - although the longer we go without the MacBook Pro refresh the harder things will get. I wish intel would hurry up and release the Haswell iris pro CPUs already! We don't want to wait until October.

No one minded the iPod mini. And iPod touch is also anodized aluminum. New form factor (new case design counts IMHO), new name, I'm guessing. I'm not completely sold on the idea yet, but I'm sure Apple has spent a lot of time thinking about it. I think the difficulty in coming up with a valid marketing proposition for a new cheaper iPhone (that wasn't marketed as just cheaper) maybe lead Apple to turning to the 5 as a valid brand identity. If apple is going to produce a new phone as its entry level model, what's more attractive as a marketing device - a new brand name that has been created just to be the cheaper model, or using the name from the current premium iPhone? I'm not sure of a definitive answer to that question. Another way to consider things, is to ask a regular person on the street what they would prefer to buy: A) An iPhone 5 at $399 B) A new iPhone brand introduced at $399 Now in my mind if I was asked the above question, I would be asking: "Well what is different about option B? Why is it cheaper? What are the trade offs?" Whereas I look at Option A and think: "An iPhone 5 for $399? SOLD." I don't think anyone looking in the sub $400 price range cares at all about the fact its not aluminium or lacks computer matched glass inlays. Literally almost every single smartphone sold below $400 (eg: every android or windows phone) is some sort of plastic. And with android even the premium models are plastic (S4 etc).

As long as there actually is a new form factor cheaper iPhone (and it sure looks like it), the name won't matter much to me at the end of the day.

Nice catch about the lack of MacBook Pro update, if we had that I'm guessing we would of actually seen Mac shipment growth last quarter No, we wouldn't have. Mac unit sales peaked during FQ1/2012 at 5,198,000 units. Since then, Mac units sales have been in decline: FQ2/2012 4,017,000 units FQ3/2012 4,020,000 units FQ4/2012 4,923,000 units For FQ1/2013 Apple combined all Mac sales into a single number. Why? FQ1/2013 4,061,000 units FQ2/2013 3,052,000 units FQ3/2013 3,754,000 units An upgrade of the MacBook Pro would not have offset the cannibalization brought about by the iPad. What we are seeing is Mac laptops starting to succumb to the separation of trucks from sedans. iPads are Apple's future, not MacBook upgrades. F2011 Mac Revenue $21,783,000,000 F2011 iPad Revenue $19,168,000,000 [First full year of sales] F2012 Mac Revenue $23,221,000,000 F2012 iPad Revenue $30,945,000,000 F2013e Mac Revenue $15,623,000,000 F2013e iPad Revenue $32,180,000,000 For Fiscal 2014 I think Apple will be lucky to sell 13 million Mac units, despite all the upgrades in the world. OTOH iPad units will grow 40+%. In future I see iPhone sales increasing iPad sales. In future I see iPad sales increasing iPhone sales. Both will increase sales of the next big thing. That's the halo effect of the future. Apple knew this back when they dropped Computer from its name.

If you're worried about Apple's future because of my post above, think about the effect on MSFT, DELL, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and the rest. 2014 is going to seriously harm these firms.

Travis liked iPhone China. I love it since I'm hoping the release is China only.

I'm betting it won't happen.
Has Apple ever made a one-off in any context other than education? And if it's A6 technology/platform, just moving to a cheaper back case probably won't save all that much money.
If it exists, it's going around the world. Oh, the glorious havoc it will cause. Say your goodbyes to the Dock Connector...

Sill holding plenty long term. STMF

It's 5C and its Color. All the idiots that complained about "Apple needs a cheaper phone" will now complain about Apple producing a cheaper phone. Meh.
This will sell to the masses and solve lots of problems.
Read Foss Patents, still need some good news on the legal front. Still watching the Oracle/GOOG proceedings, holding out hope that someone comes to their senses. Hopefully GOOG is forced to explain what DOES deserve IP protection.
I'm guessing that a lot of people have been waiting on the sidelines waiting for what we all knew was going to be a bad YoY Qtr. to be over. No new products for months on end can't last forever. We're in the market for 3 or 4 new phones and new laptops. Apple fans and investors need something to get excited about!
Go get 'em Mercel! Agree that saying something is better than nothing, afterall, that's $ not flowing into Aapl.

I think its quite obvious that if we had new MacBook pros last quarter, then instead of declining year on year shipments for Q3 we would have had increased year on year shipments instead. The MacBook Pro is apples best selling mac line. EDIT: Also, you point out that FQ1 was apples best Mac quarter ever, but it had the infamous extra 14th week. Without that extra week its likely that FQ42012 would have been Apples best Mac quarter ever.

Internet scuttlebutt says Bob Mansfield may have left apple, the only clue being his removal from apples staff management bio page.
