If we are going off topic into sports, I feel it is my duty to point out to everyone that Team New Zealand is dominating Team Oracle, and is likely to once again take possession of the oldest trophy in sporting history. Kia Kaha! Good ; Larry Ellison usually needs his ego kicked into the dirt about every two years or his douche bag titer rises to unpleasant levels. Eric in Austin

So, I posted this on another thread here, but I went into a local Verizon store this morning and asked if they were taking 5s preorders. They quickly said "NO".
Then they proceeded to take my preorder for a 64gb 5s.
I will see on Friday if they follow through on that.

Doubtful, is my wild-#$$ guess. Patently Apple discussed this a week or so back. It's a very interesting patent but NFC is yesterday's technology. See Google Wallet's "tap the phone" instructions even NOW. I don't think Apple is going there, even though it _did_ file a patent on it. If Apple saw value in docking an iPhone with something for any reason, then we'll see NFC-something within a couple years at most. But iPhone 5S takes things in the opposite direction, by keeping the device CLOSER to you with fingerprint security. By the same token, why "relinquish" your iPhone to a docking/sensor station of any kind, particularly after you just authenticated? The best balance of security, control and convenience IMHO is using your iPhone as normal, keep it firmly on your possession, and authorizing whatever transaction with on-screen prompts and letting highly encrypted, challenge-response-type shorter-distance wireless take care of the rest, at least as far as mobile payments are concerned.

Agreed. Besides, NFC is just another technology requiring resources (power and radios) and real estate, whose functions can be performed using Bluetooth 4.0 and Apple's 64 bit encryption algorithms. Short of a nation State, nobody has better security. Apple's patent is nothing more than preventing someone else from using technology that Apple created.

A Baron's article has Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimating 1 million preorders for the iPhone 5C. No time frame given, based on tweets, REALLY I mean REALLY, no real evidence. More FUD, depressing.

I have a buddy who used to be a senior banker at piper Jaffray - Gene Munster was literally found off the streets - he was in the construction business. Sell side analysts are like the guys you see on Fox News. Slightly intelligent, good looking and opinionated.

Check out UCF-State Penn. RU has to play UCF. Their QB is very talented. I get 1000 channels but somehow NOT the one the UCF-Penn game is on. Oh well -- will have to settle flipping back and forth to watch Notre Dame vs. Purdue and Ohio at Calif. Use this to find all CFB games on TV -- all times are Central lsufootball.net/tvschedule.htm

I think we will get some indication from Apple like "extremely high demand" but probably wont get any numbers for a week or so.

All apple needs to do is announce pre-orders at or north of 3 million sometime before the bell opens tomorrow and the train will continue. I'm in (the lonely and ridiculed) camp that they will do exactly this for the following reasons:
1. They announced pre-orders last year 2. China and other big populations (new carrier in Japan for example) are part of the pre-order community. 3. Apple got to 2 million last year but there was definitely supply issues. Not the case this year. 4. The new iPhone 5c is cheaper than the 5 (with or without contract - unlocked). The economic theory of price elasticity of demand should apply somewhat here. In terms of cpu features - the 5c is better than the 5. 5. Carriers are offering price promotions not because the iphone is a POS PHONE all of a sudden but rather - carriers and retailers want apple customers. They drive demand for data plans and accessories.

Many friends of mine who are eligible for a upgrade are waiting for the 5S ... If I was eligible I would wait as well. I must admit the 5C looks great but the new technology in the 5S is just too good to pass up. If Apple had taken pre-orders on both models we would have more to look forward to tomorrow morning. Let's hope I'm completely wrong ..... either way after the initial launch weekend I think Apple will report stellar sales.

I guess Apple factored that in when coming up with the price ...

Not so with Samsung or anyone else....

Still can't believe DoCoMo flat-out dropped S4 from the lineup. Sure Samsung will try a S5 by March-April, but it lacks the S3 halo, along with a truly new OS. The screen size could get still huger though. ;D

BTW, I'm feeling MUCH better about the 5C pricing as we are getting reports of carriers who are willing to deal in order to gain market share ... I guess Apple factored that in when coming up with the price ... Apple, using data we wouldn't understand if we had access to it, developed its iPhone pricing strategy several years ago. Apple hasn't deviated from that strategy to any noticeable degree. I'll bet Apple, knowing just how competitive the Japanese market is, pretty much knew what was going to happen when a third, LARGER, carrier was thrown into the mix. The lines I want to see will be in Korea. Further, I expect Blackberry to essentially fold shop during CQ1. Foxconn will buy its production facilities, and a consortium will buy its patent portfolio. Its ongoing enterprise business will be bought by MSFT (looking for an entry into the mobile market and an OS worthy the name. MSFT will then combine Nokia and Blackberry assets into "Knockberry". Think about the irony in that, 3 of mobile's leaders from 2006 being reduced to forced "mergers" just to survive, a fourth was bought outright by Google, several more have exited the marketplace, six years after the launch of iPhone. When a product's electronic components, hardware and software are commodities, the result is a commodity. Value comes from differentiation, not price. NOBODY is in a position to compete (by virtue of value added differentiation) with Apple's fully integrated products.

Lets survey the quorum here: Did anyone directly pre-order the 5c? Know of anyone who did?

I think the 5C is a sleeper. The colors and frame are so nice, and I think the price is fine. It took me a while to come around, but I really like it. The video with Jony Ive is quite sophisticated.
It is not just about "specs". It is about content and ease of use (which Apple has), but also about appeal. The 5C is appealing!

For kicks - go on twitter and search comments for 5c. Will give you a good pulse on what the marketplace is saying.

Huger. Because it sounds awesome and silly and therefore apt.
The S5 Mega should be as big as the Tab.

Mav 7531 posts in about a year. Assuming you sleep 4 hours a day - that's averages to more than one post every single hour for the last year. That's insane dedication to this forum. Thank you, I think.
