Saying that its possible to gain access by way of some elaborate act involving gaining high resolution photos of a fingerprint and manufacturing a fake finger layer might be accurate, but I'll give consumers the benefit of the doubt that they see how implausible that sounds as a threat to everyday use. I feel better about this because now I don't have to worry about my finger getting chopped off. ;D

Apple's "problem" is they used the words "highly secure" in their Touch ID. Had they said something like "the security of a fingerprint scanner on your iPhone", maybe expectations would be slightly lowered. At day's end I don't see this being significantly worse than Antennagate or Scuffgate.
Biometric security has its issues, sure, but Touch ID sure shows off the convenience benefits. As I'm not a VIP I'll be using Touch ID with no reservations...
...though maybe I'll try and register my knuckle instead of my fingertip... *tinfoil*

The fingerprint sensor is preferable to the alternatives. And the effort to crack Apple's newest feature is greater than the passcode. I don't think anyone cares.
Meanwhile, I'm sticking with 6-7M iPhones announced. If less, we might get an extra buying opportunity. Not worried.

Just visited the local AT&T. My brother is eligible for an upgrade and we were checking the supply.
5S Gone ... of course. They say they will be receiving shipments all week and to check back.
5C In stock except for Yellow. I think it's a pretty safe bet in the U.S. to say most locations regardless of carrier would have the same results.
Pretty much what everyone around here already knows ... 5S is selling as fast as Apple can make them I don't doubt supply will be an issue throughout the year. The 5C is a bit more of a mystery .... personally I wouldn't pass up all the extra tech you get with the 5S but I'd bet it will sell well to younger users who are more fashion minded ... style trumps substance .
Best of luck to everyone tomorrow .... I'm kinda dreading it already. Although in a few weeks I think we will be ok tomorrow is going to suck as I don't think Apple had enough supply to appease the fickle gamblers on Wall Street.

I sold my iPhone 5 64GB today for $525. The cost of the new iPhone 5s 64GB was $399 plus tax. How good is that?
Apple was smart to get in the case business. The leather case looks and feels great. At the same time, Apple should experience fewer returns from accidental scuffs and scratches with the gray anodized finish and more people purchasing cases at point of purchase this year.

I've seen others post weekend sales of 10M. I don't see this at all. And think about it, what kind of hurdle would Apple set up for itself next year? 12M? The lack of preorders of the 5s is probably offset by the sales from 5c channel fill, so 6M beats last year.
If it's good at anything, Apple thinks ahead, and that's a very solid reason to estimate a conservative # tomorrow morning.

With China launching the same weekend as the rest of the world, the compare to beat from last year's first weekend is 7 million (5 + 2 from China).

When I brought up earlier about a bounty being given to whoever hacks the ID thumb print thing ....I was told it was merely glory hunting. So which is it fellas? You really DON'T think this will be splattered all over the business news and spun negatively tomorrow?! That was me, and I did not say MERELY glory hunting. My comment spoke to the motivation, and I stick by my evaluation as opposed to your vast anti-Apple conspiracy theory.

Well, I did say 6-7M, although the 2M for China seems a tad arbitrary. At the end of the day, it's production, not demand. Seems to me like supplies were thinner everywhere this time around, which makes sense with China swallowing part of the # Apple built.

Although in a few weeks I think we will be ok tomorrow is going to suck as I don't think Apple had enough supply to appease the fickle gamblers on Wall Street. I would be really interested to hear how many 5c units are in stock at AT&T stores, whether they got 20 or 100 would give us a great idea about channel fill. I think many in the tech and AAPL community are missing the attractiveness of the 5C (including myself), and it's not just the addition of colors and a HD FaceTime camera. The big difference between the iPhone 5 vs 5c to customers looking to buy perhaps their first iPhone isn't the hardware. Two weeks ago a potential customer looking at iPhones in a store was looking at the 4/4s/5 - running iOS 6. Today that customer can go I to the same store and look at the 5c running iOS 7 at $99. The $99 iPhone 5c running iOS7 is far and away a much better user experience than the $199 iPhone 5 running iOS6 was 2 weeks a go.

You guys, it's not me "relying" on anything. I'm just pointing out where the benchmark will stand in the market sentiment if/when Apple reports numbers tomorrow morning. If they report less than 7 million, I bet it will be seen as a decline. Sure, we can shout "Supply issues!" as much as we want, but there are no refs in this ballgame.

Seems to me like supplies were thinner everywhere this time around, which makes sense with China swallowing part of the # Apple built. Yes, ramp-up, and the China launch happened when iPhone 5 was in much better, or just plain actual, supply/demand balance. But, China was added as a launch country from the get-go, the iPhone 5C is also expected to be part of the initial iPhone sales numbers (if any) and impossible Apple expectations. And it's pretty obvious that the addition of China right off the bat was an intentional choice on Apple's part - it could've delayed for a couple weeks and still rightly claim huge progress from last year. A "weak" sales number (hopefully no "worse" than 6-7M) combined with strong pre-order context would mitigate any WS disappointment, though I don't have a clue by how much. After that the only major Apple-specific sentiment points I can see are an iPad media event and of course earnings. (Touchgate isn't likely to be a big deal without some really big hardware vulnerability or Apple actually keeping a nice fingerprint photo on your iPhone even though it says it doesn't.)
