So far I can't do much on my phone until I sync it to get all my contacts and music and apps. So far, this is the fastest phone I've ever seen by a friggin mile. Web pages render instantly. Amazing.
I got the black 16 GB AT&T model. Wanted white but it was sold out. I would guess this store will sell 1,000+ iPhones today.

This phone is even faster than I thought. It's also light and all that other good stuff. But it's fast as hell and that's the most impressive thing so far. It also works on AT&T at AT&T park tonight which is always good and not always guaranteed.

As reported, some pre-orders are being shipped earlier. Mine is one of them. I'm in Toronto, Canada and ordered at 7:20am on the pre-order day. It was scheduled for delivery for Oct 9th.
Just got a shipping notification and it will be delivered on Oct 2nd. Woo hoo!

I use AT&T in an area with poor coverage. When I moved to my new house AT&T provided a personal cell. My iPhone 5 is not connecting to the personal cell. AT&T says this is widespread problem they are working on. That leaves me with a beautiful new phone and barely 1 bar. The interesting thing is it is working wonderfully. I have better connectivity with 1 bar than I did with 4 on my personal cell. The calls are clearer, louder and fewer dropped.
FWIW, I considered switching to Verizon, but my grandfathered "unlimited" data plan won in the end. Given the performance, I'm glad I stayed with AT&T.

Run Passbook and it will show you a list of all the compatible apps. Then pick and install the ones you want. That doesn't work for me. I had the "error connecting to iTunes Store" every time until I put in Target's coupons into my Passbook. Now that's the only thing in there. No link to get to the store.

My iPhone 5 would not connect with the AT&T Microcell either. Calls to AT&T were pretty much useless, they said it was a "known problem" and "we're working on it". When could I expect service? They said "a day or two". - Out of sheer frustration, I disconnected the Microcell, used a paperclip to push the RESET button on back of unit, reconnected and set it up as a new device via AT&T website (link below). The Microcell has been working flawlessly ever since. - A simple reset accomplished in under twenty minutes. You'd think someone at AT&T would know that ... www.att.com/3gmicrocell/unauth/login.do?target=FOAMM

I was having lunch yesterday with my mother and using my iPhone 5 as yet another try as to why she needs to get rid of her Blackberry Bold. We ate and strolled around some outdoor retail areas.
At the end of the day my wife noted that about 5 people either stopped and craned or stared continuously at the iPhone like I had a hope diamond in my hand. Cant wait to hear the sales numbers.

problems with the new iPhone. after 4 conversations with ATT, 1 conversation with the local retail ATT, and a call to apple tech support , here's the story.
the new iPhone is 4G. it seeks out 4G towers. the towers closest to me are still stronger on 3G and when this phone searches for service it shows 4G then drops to "E", which is 2G. calls drop. words break up.
the manager at the closest store (30 mi. s) told me that ATT is upgrading the towers from Portland to Seattle. In the last 3 months they have gotten things working up to Battleground, which is 45 minutes s of me going 75mph.
I'm trying to get ATT to do an internal re set of my phone to 3G (they tried that today and it didn't work) or loan/give me a 3G microcell, which is a mini satellite that connects to DSL and gives you clear and dependable 3G.
I did a network system re set on the phone yesterday and that did nothing.
ATT will supposedly solve my issue by Weds.
Beyond that? It's a great phone with excellent sound quality, fantastic camera, and just plain gorgeous. If only I could use it at home.

iPhone 4S is 14.4Mbps-capable HSDPA "4G". It's 3G by another name - basically enhanced 3G.
iPhone 5 is an LTE phone. As such, if you're in an LTE zone (probably not), then iPhone will connect to LTE and the phone will actually display "LTE". "4G" is borderline marketing (which now is something T-Mobile will increasingly rely upon as AT&T and Sprint deploy LTE as quickly as they can) to draw attention away from "4G LTE", which you should really just think of as LTE for the next few years or maybe longer.
But if you get "4G" on your display, you're on a faster connection than regular "3G".
Sounds like you're just not in a LTE zone. And not in a good cel reception zone to boot. So Microcell is your best patch. Network resets are unlikely to help...iPhone has plenty of network intelligence built in (nothing a quick Airplane Mode on-off sweep or one off-on cycle couldn't fix), so if the network coverage is bad, it's just bad. Unfortunately, that's also a minus for battery life.

You're right about no LTE, Mav. I'm half way between Pdx and Seattle, both of which are now LTE cities for ATT. Unfortunately, the phone won't hold the slightly faster than 3G signal and drops below 3G.
I try and parallel my thoughts on LTE with my computer connection, which is DSL. 3 Years ago when the local util. company replaced the antiquated wiring to my home with a 1/4 mi. long ditch to the county road, the local phone company stopped by and dropped fibre optic conduit into that ditch. 3 years and the conduit is still empty. by the time they get fibre optics to where I live we will be getting signals from Red's starship via a time delay warp speed.

Rosie, I feel your pain. I, too, live in a rural area. Used a radio antenna on the roof for many years to pick up wireless ISP connection, but it was buggy and slow. Finally, a few years ago, Qwest (now CenturyLink) installed DSL in the neighborhood. I switched to the "blazingly fast" 3 Mbps DSL (with actual throughput more like 700 Kbps up and 1.5 Mbps down). A little over a year ago, I was able to upgrade to the "blazingly fast" 5 Mbps DSL (with actual throughput more like 1.4 Mbps up and 3.2 Mbps down). Maybe in a few more years I'll be able to upgrade to the next "blazingly fast" speed, probably 7 Mbps! Meanwhile, my coworker in "the big city" loves to tell me about his 35 Mbps connection. There definitely is a digital divide and I live in it (Divide, CO).

hi PikesPique,
yup , I am indulging in the very same "blazingly fast" 5 Mbps DSL (with actual throughput more like 1.4 Mbps up and 3.2 Mbps down)." Compared with the dial up that preceded it, who can complain?
it takes 3 hrs to download an iTunes movie, but once it's downloaded, at least it can be viewed without interruption.
I keep telling everyone that when I get old I'm going to get some kind of updated heating system, as wood heat might not be as attractive in 20 years . and then there's the black bear in the woods....my newest neighbor.

Yes. It is a 64GB unlocked. From the Apple Canada store online you could only purchase unlocked phones, at least on the pre-order day. The UPS tracking now says a Friday delivery on the 28th. Hopefully yours will be delivered earlier like mine, or maybe the 16GB models had higher demand.

I'm sorry to hear about your connectivity problems, Rosie and PikesPique. Rural areas are a challenge. I used to get only a bar or two myself here in urban Berkeley, but it seems that AT&T has updated and now I get much better coverage as well as 4G on the new white 32! 4G is faster than WiFi - it's amazing.
I had battery doubts a couple days ago - it seemed to drain much faster than my old 4, but today I started with a full charge, did a few texts, received a couple calls, etc., and at six pm I'm still at 100% - go figure. LoveMyiPhone!

As everyone is saying, pure magic, speed, feel, weight (had to check my top pocket as couldn't feel if I had the phone on me) maps will improve, hope Aussie gets voice navigation soon.
Sunday at new Carindale, Brisbane Store, 50 inline before open, saw a couple in their 60/70s getting first Iphone, big smile on their faces!
Local Telco store I worked at last year after first batch of around 20 had gone, didn't see anymore for about 2 weeks! Constrain issues for weeks and weeks.
This year 62 first day all gone, just confirmed received 2nd supply again in the 60s this morning so huge difference over 4s

Good news update for me. Early this AM I got on line and read the comm. sites for sprint and AT&T...here's what I learned. The 3 g microcell is not recognizing many iPhone 5 units and apparently Cisco is working on an upgrade. I also read that someone with a sprint unit got their cell service to work by toggling on and off the airplane mode, so naturally I tried that and lo and behold I'm back in business. No more dropped calls and 2g on the display. Also no 4 g on the display, just plain old AT&T. When their tech folks get back to me someday I will share this simple fix with them, but first I will listen to what they say. Now if aapl would just make like a rocket ....
