Discussion question for you FA types... How much AAPL investor "fear" do you think may have been generated by AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson suggesting his company may want to eventually transition away from the subsidy smartphone model, potentially suggesting conjecture that Apple may be forced to lower the price/margins of the iPhone? Since we are talking about fear, I don't think it is much. Apple investors by now have been hit with so many "Apple is doomed" FUD pieces, it is hard for me to imagine that anyone is left who is naive enough to react to it. If the carriers are foolish enough to move away from the subsidized model, they will be forced to compete on price to sell bandwidth which is a commodity. Maybe Verizon would have a claim to a superior product based not the scope of their network, but they are selling CDMA, so maybe not. In any event, the cost of service to the user will drop. That allows Apple to offer financing for phones that keeps the monthly payments where they were. I don't see a threat here.

I'm so old I remember the aggravation we had when we couldn't break 666. My Vette can't break 666.

I think this board tends to overestimate what the average investor (retail or WS) knows. I think few obsessively refresh Apple Investor News every 90 seconds 24/7/365 like Mav does. Which is one reason that I am a real skeptic of "priced in" claims in general. And those who are in the know probably think that Stephenson was whistling past the graveyard with that bullshit. A couple weeks later, AT&T is offering $450 bribes to T-Mobile customers to switch! Nice to see Lovey posting something here other than threats & rebukes & timeouts though!

Poll time. Would you be happier if AAPL was the only stock you were invested in and... 1. AAPL ended 2014 in the green, and you made X money. or 2. AAPL ended 2014 flat to negative, but you made 2X money trading it. 3. No preference as long as I ended up green. You weren't supposed to take the bait!

I think this weeks drop in price was due to 2 factors working in combination:
1) Tim Cook and Co telling Carl to go fuck himself. I think either Carl is selling and/or the minions that try to emulate him are selling because of Apples message about what they're going to do with their cash.
2) Professional traders and investors were on holiday, so there was not a counter to the selling by the crew in point #1. Note the low volumes for this past week.
Next week will be telling about the real direction short term. BWTFDIK I'm just some schmuck reading and posting on an Apple fanboy chat room.

AMZN will race higher on this news as someone will report that the "airlift" was done by one of his drones.

It think the media has mischaracterized Apple's response in the extreme. Did anyone really think Apple was going to come out in support for an investor's initiative? It was hardly a "FU" to Carl or "drop dead" to him. The press LOVES to click-bait with headlines. 2. I agree.

The emergency airlift for Bezos poses this troubling question for AMZN stockholders: Can you name another Amazon executive?
Or, AMZN pops to $500 on a relief rally...

If I had that money, I'd get airlifted to see my own doctor as well over every little issue. But anything to see that Amazon bubble pop

I don't invest in Amazon, so no...I could care less about Amazon, it's not a competitor. No idea the obsession with it

Must. Resist. Talking. About. Cars. But still, that's impressive! There's nothing wrong with talking about cars we already own. It's opening a sub-section to discuss all the cars we are going to buy due to AAPL going up that creates a bubble.

I'm puzzled by the lack of reports claiming to know anything about Apple's current quarter performance. Usually, several weeks after new releases, we get lots of FUD claiming supply order reductions, weak sales and the like. Very few reports since the black Friday this year. Anyone else notice this? Yes. It indicative of Good News regarding sales. The Doomers would be all over it, if it wasn't going well.

Interesting article in The NY Times: EBay’s Strategy for Taking On AmazonRelevant here because of all the discussion of the digital wallet metaphor. iBeacons and apps and such will be key to the success of Amazon competitors, so it is not off-topic IMO. Also informative for those who think Amazon has no competitors. When 94% of all retail purchases are still made offline. Just wait until Apple makes some iBeacon deals with the likes of Wal-Mart or Target.

One piece of news tomorrow morning will be the date of the December qtr. earnings call. Two thoughts on this....if Apple moves the call back a bit, we get maximum China Mobile early sales trending built into guidance and cc comment color.... Secondly, once the date is official every money manager will need to determine how to play the high news period starting with CM rollout and culminating in earnings. Some will want to enter, some increase position, some take profits ( if not already done between 570 and 540!). This will focus the mind.....the roulette ball is about to spin. Place your bets.

I'll give Bezos a pass this week.
I've had a kidney stone before and it was far and away the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and I completely understand getting airlifted off a cruise ship to get it treated ASP, even for a regular person I would expect that to happen. Again, the pain is absolutely excruciating in multiple ways.

Since I'm on the subject of imaging for some reason, a powerful reason why Apple won't get on the 4K recording train until it's good and ready (never mind that 4K monitors, mobile displays and TVs are still very far from the mainstream): philipbloom.net/2013/10/24/note4k/(spoiler alert: image stabilization - who knows how much more tech/processing power's needed for that many pixels, H.265)

So what does everyone think the new product is going to be and when we'll see it? I'm expecting the iWatch in June with serious images/rumors starting in April and May.

If we are to believe TC's comments about new stuff "throughout 2014," then waiting until June to release something doesn't quite cut it. Updated Apple TV with apps SDK or iPad Big soonish - March, April? iWatch in June could work… (But what-do-I-know?!) Happy New Year to all.
