The bar is open! A week of pause prior to earnings. News/sentiment/momentum seems on an upswing (WWDC, IBM deal), so hoping that continues with a few of the X factors showing up positive in the call on Tuesday. Should be a couple of big quarters coming up, so buy early and buy often.

Another few days before Apple sets the tone into iPhone season.

I've been using iOS 8 on my walking around town iPhone 4S. New features aside, it's what they *haven't* done that frustrates me. I still hate the way folders are implemented for apps. There are way too many taps to get to some obscure setting controls - we should be able to put a set of triggers in a "favorites" list. Heck, my TV remote and even my SLR camera can do this. Apple stubbornly refuses to add a software Dvorak keyboard layout among the dozen or so language versions - especially egregious because iOS has *hardware* support with bluetooth connected keyboards. I understand why Apple makes such decisions, and as we know the update opens a flood gate for developers to plug the holes. The new hardware will have new features and iOS 8.1 will ship to turn them on (keeping everything secret during the beta.)
So, AAPL fans - what else did Apple leave out this time around? What does this mean for the future in a year? Help me read the tea leaves.

Google loses a key executive ("Acting CEO") and the stock vaults up 5% yesterday? This sounds like a serious loss for Google. www.cnbc.com/id/101848849

It's getting a little AMZN-like AMZN and GOOG both strike me as being very proactive with developing their WS relationships behind the scenes. The analyst is flattered by the attention and probably accepts much at face value the information conveyed. Bezos, a former hedge fund manager knows how the game is played. I imagine Eric T. Mole is cut from the same cloth -- "Google TV will be running on majority of new TVs by summer 2012". They're bullshit artists. www.theverge.com/2011/12/7/2618225/eric-schmidt-le-web-paris-google-tv-majority-all-tvs

More hype, higher multiple, higher risk. I forget, do AMZN and GOOG provide dividends or a buyback program?

Most intelligent people here (and Mav) understand why Google and Amazon have extremely precarious business models. In Google's case, Apple actually was the iceberg (Apple started the mobile computing revolution that killed the desktop and laptop, and took out Google's CPC's with them). As for Amazon, they give it away, so customers love them, but their customers won't love them once they try to raise some prices and actually make some profits. OTOH, the average WS ANALyst would not understand what you meant if you said Google and Amazon were in trouble. They'd likely say, "it's a feature, not a bug." You can spew all the logic you want in a Cuckoo's Nest, but don't expect to win crazy people over with logic and enthusiasm.

The ousting of Ballmer and anointment of Nadella as CEO of Microsoft forebodes many changes, some of which were outlined in the latter's verbose, and equally opaque, "memo."
An interesting sidelight is the effect on its relationship with Apple. The biggest news is that the Ballmer witch hunt for closet Apple users is over. No longer will Softies have to conceal their iDevices. In fact, I have it on good authority that a Softie was in my local Apple store recently and purchased 10 Mac Pros for use in the marketing of Microsoft's Xbox.

When was this first published? Two decades ago, in the eyes of nearly all Arabs, the U.S. towered over every other major power. Today America is a curse on the lips of many of the most intelligent and moderate in their ranks. “At this moment,” claims an embittered Princeton-educated former Jordanian minister, “there is no Arab more extreme than the other. What I say about the U.S. is being said by every Kuwaiti, Saudi, or Libyan. Like Churchill, we are ready to make an alliance with the devil to keep ourselves alive.” An American historian declares flatly that “not since the Boxer Rebellion has there been as rapid and ubiquitous a revulsion against a foreign power as there has been against the U.S. in the Middle East.” And a man who once helped formulate our Arab policy sadly acknowledges that “our ability to play a role in that region has never been less than it is today.” HERE

Good luck to all next week.
I'm a bit fearful Apple has to impress WS to avoid the FUD machine, enabling the evil overlords to buy ahead of what's coming. We'll likely get an anticipation rally, covering some anxiety if AAPL sells off due to an "in-line" earnings report.
I think Luca would like to keep the "good news train" rolling, so we'll see on Tuesday.
