I am not convinced Apple will produce car or have a car produced, but...
One thing that intrigues me, beyond battery or fuel cell developments, is the actual construction of a car.
A car has a lot of heavy parts in current vehicles that may not be needed and especially a electric car. - combustion engine .... replace with electric motor(s) - drive train from engine to wheels ... replace with motor(s) see above. - steering wheel to tire ... replace with wire and solenoids, like fly by wire planes and heavy dependence on computing. - transmission not needed. - brake system weight reduced because braking assisted by reversing polarity on electricity helping to stop a vehicle.
Are there other weight gains to be made?
As I said, I am not convinced Apple will make or have a car made, but could some of their research directly be involved in the above?

You might like to look at the T.27 by Gordan Murray. I think it is 1500 pounds.

Not sure is good for investors if Apple starts selling car BUT pretty sure Apple has been investigating... late SJ did comment about car steering wheel when he talks about touch interface.
Are cars for navigating Space Ship campus, cars? I mean using Space Ship as the test bed to show the world the viability of the EV. Is Anki part of this plan? Is liquid metal a viable material for building the body of the car?

WHY NOT FIND OUT, I say. Apple's earned the right to highly secretive moonshot projects. And it can be done for "surprisingly cheap". Next-gen people-movers for Apple Campus 2 would be pretty sweet.
