The A6 SoC just changed the game.
If the iPad Air exists, will it sport it? It may be asking a bit much this generation, but maybe, just maybe, the iPad Air won't net out to be nearly as "cheap" as we thought...

I think the iPad Air will be an 8GB iPad 2 in a smaller enclosure. I believe price prevails over performance for this product.

Love it when I don't execute stupid plans (still: I'll believe the iPad mini if I see it for real )

Does that looks like a 16-9 aspect ratio? I'm not sure that Apple should do a 16-9 iPad, since the existing iPad is 4-3 and Apple certainly doesn't need to add another variation at this point, after moving the iPhone from 3-2 to 16-9 last week.

No. It just seems that way because they made the bezel thinner on the long side, more like an iPhone/iPod bezel.

It will be relatively inexpensive, but not at all "cheap". But it needs to be differentiated from the full-sized iPad in significant ways as to not substantially cannibalize sales of big bro. Consumers who need power & screen real estate will still opt for the 3rd gen iPad.

Thanks, Mav. I skipped the drama on the old board, so don't really know much except it's been quiet over there. I like the quickness of this site.

Let's just say that given how iPad's forum has gathered almost _200_ new accounts - and I'll assume they're all unique accounts - things sadly went downhill very, very quickly over there. I observed it all unfolding but I'll spare you the details. We have what we have now.

Don't worry, I've been foruming long enough to know multiaccounts go with the territory. But as for iPad... ...oh my.

The iPad mini could be marketed as the first post-Steve device. Apple will get through the first anniversary of his passing this week, then host a launch event with style, energy and pop. The iPad has become synonymous with education, corporate bigwigs and tech mavens. The iPad mini will have to be directed at a more hip, more mobile, more active demographic. It'll be interesting to see how Apple pulls it off.

Even though the iPad would be as "post-Steve" as iPhone 5, if you know what I mean.
I don't really care about all that "Apple without Steve" claptrap, the product never lies.

It would be the "cabbage patch doll" (sought after) for this holiday season. I don't think they can meet demand until January.

I visualize the smaller iPad as being marketed as more of an iCloud device with not a lot of GB's. I see it as light weight, beautifully designed and even folks with iPad 2's / New will probably want one to toss in a purse or brief case. It will be funky and highly portable and Siri will be there, of course. And I bet it is wifi only.

Interesting news today about the new model of iPad showing up in analytics.
What would a mid-cycle iPad update mean? What if we get the mini with an A5 and an updated iPad with lightning connector and A6 chip? I know there were rumors of all devices, including the iPad, quickly moving to lightning connectors.
If they did update it, we could have another update in the spring or iPad updates could move permanently to fall. Seems to butt up a little to close to the iPhone release.
Can't wait for the event.

Not reasonable to upgrade the new iPad now. It is perfect now having 6 months between major product launches.

A minor product upgrade would be reasonable. One of the faster, cheaper, better mantra. Such as CPU from a new method of fabrication.

The dropping of the iPad model number starts to make sense. iPad could see speed bumps just like the computer lines. Now we could have iPad Early 2012 and iPad Late 2012 models. We're used to it on the computer side.

"Trick question": What is the highest-performing (as in actual performance) iOS device?

|

Post by cambrose on Oct 6, 2012 16:57:03 GMT -8
Depends on what you mean by actual performance but the iPhone 5 is computationally twice as fast as the previous leader, the New (Early 2012) iPad... And it shows.

Yup.
Are iPad 3 owners up in arms despite having a weaker iOS device in terms of theoretical horsepower and an under-1000 Geekbench score? Have you heard anything from Apple's adoring fans in the media about this outrage of leaving iPad owners in the dust?
The iPad 3 _could_ update to A6 now. But I think it's possible for any iPad mini to have an A6 derivative.

To me, the mini is going to be all about cost over performance. That's why I think we'll see the guts of an iPad 2 in a smaller enclosure.
Apple already has to maintain 4 processor lines... A4, A5, A5X, and A6. Moving the Early 2012 iPad to A6 would allow them to close one fab line. Maybe they get some cost savings and make their flagship products their best performing products simultaneously.
As a developer, my AI was a little disappointed there wasn't a performance boost on the last iPad rev. Maybe they're looking to make up for it now.

Ever since iPhone 5 pixel dimensions were leaked, I've been wondering if iPad pixel dimensions would be modified to fit the taller apps. Could that be the rumored design change? Part of doubling down on secrecy?
