MORE on the $9.00 computer. A crowdfunded project to bring to market a $9 computer has blown past its initial goal of $50,000 to raise over $500,000 in a few days. The project, called C.H.I.P., is a Linux-powered computer that's described as being "built for work, play, and everything in between!" But what does $9 buy you? The answer is, a lot. At the heart of the C.H.I.P. is a 1GHz Allwinner SoC, with a built-in Mali400 GPU that is compatible with OpenGLES and OpenVG. Backing that up is 512MB of DDR3 RAM and 4GB of flash storage. On the output front it features a single USB port, a micro USB that supports OTG, a composite video output (with options for VGA and HDMI via an adapter), headphones output and microphone input. C.H.I.P. also supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, so it's also a capable wireless device. This hardware is powerful enough to power LibreOffice, the Chromium browser, and a whole host of games and programs to teach programming. There are options for an external battery, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, and a plastic shell to compliment the C.H.I.P. It's actually quite amazing just how much silicon $9 can buy you. www.zdnet.com/article/the-9-dollar-computer-what-do-you-get/

HONG KONG—Strong demand for large-screen iPhones helped Apple Inc.’s major assembler, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., achieve its highest first-quarter profit growth in a decade. Hon Hai Friday reported a 56% rise from a year earlier in its first-quarter earnings. With investors clamoring for higher returns, it also roughly doubled its dividend payout. ...... Hon Hai, which derives almost half of its revenue from Apple, has been seeking growth drivers beyond contract manufacturing as competition for Apple’s orders intensify and wages in China—where it does its manufacturing—continue to rise. ....... Hon Hai said its net profit for the three months ended March 31 rose to 30.39 billion new Taiwan dollars ( $998 million), from NT$19.54 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose 15% to NT$1.01 trillion from NT$883.48 billion. The bottom line got a boost from a 40% jump in the number of iPhones sold by Apple in its fiscal second quarter ended March 28. Fast-growing Chinese smartphone makers including Xiaomi Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. also helped. Hon Hai’s 66%-owned unit FIH Mobile Ltd., which assembles non-Apple phones, reported in March its full-year net profit more than doubled to US$169 million from US$77 million. Upstart Xiaomi, which recently became the world’s most valuable technology startup, said earlier its smartphone shipments more than tripled to 61.1 million units in 2014. Measured by shipments, it was No. 2 in China in the first quarter www.wsj.com/articles/hon-hai-enjoys-big-iphone-bump-1431688938 is half of $998 million or $500 million. XIAOMI & HUAWEI is $169 million. PERHAPS, I am comparing s to oranges. may be providing production machines. THEREFORE may be providing MORE sales than profits to Hon Hai.

has a number of prominent Democrats on their team. Al Gore and Lisa P. Jackson come quickly to mind. For Republicans, ElRushbo has been a cognoscente since 1988. It looks like JEB BUSH (Gov. Jeb Bush hates the Affordable Care Act so much, he’d rather use the health apps on the Apple Watch instead.) gizmodo.com/jeb-bush-says-apple-watch-health-apps-are-better-than-o-1704537324 and good old NEWT have joined the team!

A new supply chain report this morning notes that Quanta vice chairman CC Leung wanted to clarify past rumors that the Apple Watch had a poor yield rate, and that Apple was considering outsourcing related orders to other manufacturers and has even asked employees of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to assist Quanta Computer to assemble the device. Leung stated that Apple's wearable device is no longer a challenge to Quanta in both technology and quality. Due to a labor shortage during the Lunar New Year holidays, Quanta was forced to borrow manpower from other manufacturers and was only able to deliver limited shipments in the first quarter. However, Quanta now has sufficient capacity to manufacture all the orders and should see a giant contribution from its wearable device business in the second quarter. Leung noted that the wearable device is unlike the smartwatches it produced before and has a lot of functions in it and its client is satisfied with the product. www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2015/05/quantas-yield-rate-for-the-apple-watch-is-now-flying-full-tilt.html/photo/1

Artman, this is the second time you've mentioned the CHIP project. Are you involved somehow? If so though, you need to learn better promotion skills! Here is a direct link to the project. Nine dollars will get you the bare chip with composite connections. Sort of like the Commodore 64 without the keyboard. You charge it by microUSB, and I suppose you can connect a keyboard and mouse using that connection or the Bluetooth. They also have a casing with screen, keyboard, and battery at the $49 level.

I simply mention it as an example of the advancement of technology and falling prices. I have no FINANCIAL interest in the project. My FIRST calculator in 1970 (for college) cost $169. I betcha I could buy a solar powered calculator for $10.00

Can we safely assume you and your wife no longer car pool and your cars are newer than 16 years old? Congratulations on your perseverance. Thanks, rickag! Well, we no longer carpool because we're both retired. And we did give away our 1996 Infinity I30 (which gave us good service over those 16 years) a couple of years ago and replaced it with a MB 350ML (generally derided by some as a soccer mom's car). But we still have only one car. We remodeled our home last year instead of moving to a more expensive home and location because it's just the two of us and we didn't need more room. We take nothing for granted and remain shocked but delighted that our investment in AAPL has made our retirement so financially easy. I visit this forum multiple times every day. Not because I'm nervous about our investment in AAPL but because I love reading how others are benefiting from their own AAPL investment. Plus, this forum seems to have attracted a very nice group of people who also just happen to be smart enough to invest in the stock of a great company. Thanks again for your kind comment.

This whole story makes me feel great. Thanks for sharing. You and your family sound so deserving of all the rewards you are now reaping from those "lucky" choices. However, IMO the situation you now find yourselves in can only partially be described as luck. Few people have the perseverance, conviction and commitment that you do.

Actually, I'm hoping a good number of the forum members have that "perseverance, conviction and commitment" to benefit, as we did, from investing in AAPL for the long term. And you're aother good example of what I just told rickag, "...this forum seems to have attracted a very nice group of people who also just happen to be smart enough to invest in the stock of a great company."

Wow the board is certainly positive today. I think it is because Luckychoices has brightened everyone's attitude with a great American success story. I know I enjoyed it and I remember Lucky's original post back in 2012 so I appreciate his update, It is music to the ears of a long investor such as myself. I hope everyone here can someday say they had the same good fortune that LC did and retire comfortably.
Big thank you to Since84 and Artman for their search for all the news that is Apple out there as well as those from the rest of you. To watch the success of investors such as LC, Mercel, Mace, JD and others should give us all a little boost when we feel down.

People wondered if the Apple Car was for real only a little while ago, but I think Tim & c. realized that they were way behind on this versus their primary competitor and didn't want to cede that market without a fight. The Goog's prototype fleet of 25 adorable pods will deploy this summer for testing. [begin rant] Beyond this, though, what are they up to? Revamping Glass (hah!); building robots; developing Nest; 'material' upgrades to Droid; serving search with declining cpc; getting spanked by the EU; seeing their higher-end Android buyers defecting to iOS... Why is their PE so high again? The search-as-an-annuity + cool new stuff concept just doesn't justify its loft for me. Where's the beef? [end rant] P.S. Luckychoices, you need to change yr handle to Smartchoices. Nice job. www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/15/us-google-autos-selfdriving-idUSKBN0O01TZ20150515?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

Can we safely assume you and your wife no longer car pool and your cars are newer than 16 years old? You know, part of my upbringing that I have tried to continue, sometimes to a fault, is being smart about spending. Why spend money on stuff you don't need, or that depreciate at a crazy fast rate? While our minivan is younger, my 4runner is a '92, now just about to turn 24 years old. I can afford a newer vehicle, but it's holding up well and given how little we drive it I just can't really think of a good reason to replace it. I've now owned it for 11 years, after buying it from a Kernel Engineer at Apple. I even tried to replace it a few years ago, moving into something with airbags when I was commuting over the mountain in bad conditions. But I didn't like it as much and ended up selling it instead of this one. It's not going to last forever, and depreciation has finally started to hit those 4runners that are only 10 years old that it makes them tempting. But truthfully while it's not the best at hauling a third of a cord of rounds, I don't feel devastated if I put a scratch on it on a 4wd trail or pulling someone out of the snow, and it's almost never let me down and keeps kicking on. Like AAPL stock, when I look at the other choices, it sure makes it hard to consider getting rid of it.

I can see myself picking up a CHIP, just for play.
Today will be a lesson in humility for me. I picked up a single, expensive, unhedged $130 call before earnings, expiring today. I know it's not much in the scheme of everything, and not even in the big picture of my stock-heavy portfolio, but it certainly weighs unduly in my thoughts.
Congrats, Luckychoices. I would have said something yesterday but with all the politics flying around I thought I might slip and say something intemperate about communism. When that happens I figure best stay mum instead. (This doesn't count, does it?)
Yay, Phoebes! Dahling, you must snap a pic of your oh-so-fab wristwear on your elegant wrist!
