ipad is particularly useful in exhibition such as bridal exhibition, tour exhibition. I guess because its very mobile and easier to setup then PC. In an exhibition, time is money from both organiser and exhibitor point of view. I have start seeing ipad act as score book in a mini concert. what a surprise! Imagination is the limit for iPad usage so as the iPad market.

Like others have said before, WS analysts wanted a lower entry price with preserved margins. You can't have both. Apple was going down whether the entry price was $299 or $329. +10000000.... My exact thoughts. This was a no-win situation.

What a bummer!! Still can't get over the $329 starting price. I might understand all the justification for that price but how much of a big deal would it be for Apple to simply price it at 299. From a marketing standpoint 329 sounds quite pricey. When you put it in context to the 199 and 249 prices of Google/Amazon, 299 would still look quite appealing. And then, of course, there's this iPad number bombshell. I'm going to do some wishful thinking here that there might be a possibility that the number reported on Thursday is much higher than 15 mln. I'm thrilled with the Mini pricing. They'll get the premium on every unit they can produce. A better product costs more. People understand that. Value matters. Mini will deliver more value per dollar than any other "small" tablet. As for the iPad number, Apple said "two weeks ago" for a reason. They are never that specific. Don't overlook that comment or you'll be disappointed.

Being visible about IOS and iPad potential market make me firm about holding big chunk of aapl share. the future is bright with introduction of the ipad mini because it reduce the cost to fan out the usage of iPad in the biz. this would speed up adoption rate by enterprise, it would have halo effect toward Iphone and iMac. I'm happy to read your perspective on things, chiongleng.

That is right, TC is telling the world to temper expectations for the ipad. In the CC he will talk about the channel changeover. That is what has happened. Booked sales last qtr to fill the channel for whatever reason to stop production. I am stunned by this and it makes no sense.

Simplify, simplify, simplify.
I was wrong about the introduction of a mini. In one way or another we were all wrong, and there's a very good point to be learned there. No matter our own feelings, we (nor anyone else) do not have access to the information that Apple manage does. Because Apple is growing like a well watered/fertilized weed, it is obvious that none of our opinions mean squat.
There is nothing wrong with that. It just means that we are spending too much time/energy trying to second guess the most secretive/successful Company in the world, supplanting our personal agendas for those of the best managed Company in the world.
In the future I am limiting my "speculation" to how what is known will impact AAPL's price. Everything else is noise. To that end, today I cancelled my membership in 3 Apple centric forums (not including this one). My posts here will decline, as will my reading of certain posters.
Too much data/information is just as bad (maybe more so) than too little.

Unable to watch events unfold today. I'm confused. I'm still holding core shares and core BCS aren't going anywhere either. Need to figure out what to do with the items at the margin (cash & risky bcs's). I see iPads adding to core at the the current level and I like that. Does anybody know if Andy Zaky has posted any thoughts yet?

Since none of you watch CNBC you should know that Maria Bartiromo interviewed Julian Roberston this afternoon and his number one stock he loves is AAPL - said it has exceptional value especially at these levels. He said it about three times...it was aired about ten minutes ago.

I guess I should clarify the last post by saying I finally got thru to Apple who told me they have no specific dates; just the Nov/Dec time frames.

I removed my name from PED's site last qtr. I have given up also as it is a wast of brainpower and God only knows I don't need to be wasting any. Apple's guidance has always been a rubix cube. I have never understood how a company 3 weeks into a quarter and knowing their commitments and plans could not do a better job. I always had high hopes for this qtr from earlier in the year, not so now. Now the question is, did Apple manage to sell the same amount of iphones as Q3, that is a tough one. 26 million is a lot of phones. We shall see.

Stocktwit people seem to think we have a sell the news. Meanwhile, Andy Zaky is on the warpath. This time AAPL vs. Goog at CNN/Fortune finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012/10/23/google-vs-apple/Big finale: Apple still has at least 3 years of explosive growth ahead. Andy has put what we all know into graphic format. Only an idiot invests in Google over Apple. That so many do choose Google over Apple only proves how many more idiots there are, compared to those using reasoned analysis. As good as Andy's article and analysis is, nothing will change. You can't convince idiots of their error.

Arrived in Kauai yesterday afternoon and was thrilled to see AAPL up >20. As I posted a couple of days ago, iPad Mini over $249 was going to be trouble. I'm scratching my head a bit over what they were thinking but I've learned not to second guess management. It's hard to tell whether today's reaction is sell the news, awful market day, disappointment at pricing or combination of all the above. New iMac looks gorgeous! I'm willing continue on the ride and see how things sort out.

I like your attitude, Bill. It's refreshing, compared to some of the other voices of fear. Please, guys, let's man up a little. My voice isn't one of fear. Just one of frustration. And I'll reiterate. I like the $329 pricing, even if the market doesn't. The bottom line will be better with $329 versus $299 in the long run. I'm just disappointed in the iPad number. I also don't like the way it was presented. Earnings related items should be left for earnings conference calls. Just my opinion though. And no, I do not worry about our long term prospects. And reposting my estimates on 4Q iPad numbers... The problem is that Apple is so full of leaks at this point that EVERYONE knew in June that an iPad mini was in the works. So, what did people do....they decided not to buy and wait instead for the debut of the iPad mini. So...there are the lost sales....like everything when people are anticipating a new model...they wait. Apple consumers are more attuned to product refreshes than the average consumer. Sad that Katie Huberty is, once again, right!!!

I added to all positions end of day. You still think the low is in, don't you. Not entirely sure -- numerous signposts pointing to 585-595. I figure: 1) we're close enough to scale in from here to there...and hock my jewelry below there if necessary; 2) as a card-carrying member of the Tinfoil Hat Club, I naturally think the EOs are out to get us. Was this a final flush? Fearful bulls capitulating and greedy bears holding out for just a little more (like bulls did at 705)? Well, let's see how many puts were opened today...and how many calls were closed. I did hedge. Trying something I mostly do as paper trades on boring OE Fridays but remembered $Billyall did a while ago to hedge against potential WWDC sell off: NOV'12 condor...bought 575/585 bear put spreads (for hedge) and sold 555/565 bull put spreads to defray hedge costs. Whenever we confirm a bottom, I'll close the bears, keeping the bulls.

I lack conviction one way or another.
My instinct these days is to just not make trades during that time.
Clarity will come. Just a couple days away. The short-term picture is very unclear due to all the refreshes. But this does set the table for much better quarters ahead.

I need a few green days - I am emotionally exhausted from these two weeks. I need sanity to reign...is that too much to ask?

Nexus 7 weight = 12 oz. Kindle Fire 7" weight = 13.9 oz. iPad mini 8" weight = 10.8 oz.
N7 thickness = 10.5 mm. KF7 thickness = 10.3 mm. iPad Mini thickness = 7.2 mm.
N7 battery life = 8 hrs. KF7 batt. life = 11 hrs. Mini batt. life = 10 hrs.
N7 & KF7 resolution = 1280 x 800. Mini reso. = 1024 x 768
You get about 50% more viewable screen on the Mini (would quote from the presentation but there's no way to fast-forward thru it as posted now at Apple.com). It's lighter, thinner, made of aluminum with a slick design, runs way more apps for a pad, has TWO cameras - one at 5 MP, etc., ETC.
So no complaining about the price! This cute, little sucker should cost more than the other lesser one-hand tablets out there. I may just have to get one for bed-time reading - despite owning an iPad2 . . .

The price is close enough to the $299 that was considered the sweet spot --- the bigger issue, when the stock started to tank, was when TC said they sold their millionth iPad two weeks ago. I was watching the stream and watching the stock. As soon as he said that Stocktwits lit up and focused on that one comment - and the proverbial turd hit the fan. So this is about earnings projections/anticipation.

Apple's too big for anyone to really make good calls anymore. I lot of luck is involved. I told Prazan the other day that I was worried about the iPad number (I'm always too high). Wish I had acted on that. The riskiest thing I have are Apr BCSs. Might sell or roll those out after I put in new Q4#s. Ugh.

Despite what the stock does in the short-term, which I think will be to go sideways till January much like it did last year, Apple now clearly has the most beautiful, functional, broadest range of hot-selling tech products in the world. I really like the new designs and, surprise, so does everyone else! I would add to all my positions if I, uh, had any ammo left.

I think that it's interesting that the release schedule of the iPad has been changed, just as the iPhone release schedule was changed in the transition from the 4 to the 4S.
This opens up a large spot in the spring, when we would have normally expected the iPad "4".
In my view this spot can be filled in three ways: -iPad "5" -iPhone 6, thus returning the iPhone to a spring release schedule. -Or, perhaps, the Apple TV: spring 2013.
It seems likely to me that we will see an iPhone 6 in spring 2013, because I don't expect for Apple to continue to refresh both the iPhone and the iPad so close to one another every year.
