Hi, long time lurker first time poster. Now I'm not quite sure how this post will be taken as obviously there's a lot of love for Apple on this board myself included, and past experience has kind of shown I should expect to get shot down but I'm ready Personally I think Apple made a faux pas in releasing the new ipad yesterday by that I mean purely in terms of ticking off their existing new ipad (3) base. Yes it makes perfect sense to reset iPad to an October date you maximise your holiday sales and shifting to a late year release would make sense in making budget allocation easier for the education market. But you can't deny there are going to be a lot of upset customers who bought the iPad between March and yesterday. Do they have a right to be upset? Strictly speaking they still have a product that works and is worth what they paid for. Are most of those customers rational enough to realise that? Apple has the brand loyalty were I'd say the majority of their customers have to have the latest version, are they going to be irked that their iPad was the top model for only 6 months. I bet you they will. Now should any of that be Apple's problem? Is it going to impact them largely probably not. Should those who bought the new ipad just suck it up..maybe but that's not what Apple is about. Were talking about a company that places priority on customer satisfaction and loyalty. Apple can't get into a situation where profit comes at the expense of customer loyalty, then it becomes no better than any of its competitors. People pay premium prices for Apple products not only because they are better products but I'd argue also because of the name. They expect a premium service too. Personally I think some sort of gesture to all iPad buyers from march to now would solve the issue at very little impact to Apple it's self and therefore still preserving that loyalty. I'm sure this is going to be a contentiousness topic but is Apple starting to sway towards strategies that maximise profit at customers expense?

This was not an update that would hurt anyone's feelings. Same display, same case just with a different connector. The ipad3 is a great device, the ipad4 is just a subtle tweak.

I am one of those ipad 3 customers and this doesn't bother me at all. So I am one generation behind 4 months sooner. Big deal. Minor issue in my opinion. Now look at it from the point of view of the Holiday season. All kinds of buyers can now purchase with the knowledge that they are buying or getting the latest and greatest. That is the positive side of this non issue.

Me and my son have the iPad 3 and the update doesn't bother us at all.
As a shareholder, I like the fact that they an update within six months. Why wait a year, especially if the product is physically the same? It should be like that for the iPhone also, why wait until next October? They should come out with the 5s in April-June.

I guess the problems is they(Apple) showed their hand when they revealed the lightning connector with iPhone5. They obviously felt the need to deliver an Android 7" competitor now so they could generate momentum in the lead up to holidays.
It then does not make sense to fragment the eco system with different connectors for non-legacy products... too messy. So the iPad had to transition at the same time. It is essential that third party product manufacturers get clear signals from Apple as to it's intention and road map fro IOS. And this unambiguously says... 'its Lightning all the way, from now on'. This is great long term news for the Third party accessory economy.
I think there will always be some collateral damage whenever Apple upgrades or transitions a product. It's not the first time Apple has changed direction - transitions to PowerPC, Intel, omission of floppy drives/optical dives and OSX are just some of the somewhat fundamental changes Apple has challenged us with in the past, but most metrics just keep going up.
BTW I'm also a long time lurker.....

Benoir, You should post more often.
That really is the only reason for the update, to make lightening the standard. The new chip is a plus, but I doubt noticeable
I am an iPad guy, I do not see me ever buying the mini, but to each his own. Someone in this house will get a new one every year. The mini will sell we in places like NYC, Tokyo, London, etc...

Welcome spindo,
Newest iPad will keep people interested. We don't want the customers to think Apple is slacking. If the update is possible and does not cause SKU overload, go for it.

This was not an update that would hurt anyone's feelings. Same display, same case just with a different connector. The ipad3 is a great device, the ipad4 is just a subtle tweak. True to an extent but in Apple's own words it's twice as fast. Me and my son have the iPad 3 and the update doesn't bother us at all. I am one of those ipad 3 customers and this doesn't bother me at all I wouldn't expect many of the people who frequent this board to have a problem with it. Most of us are probably shareholders and have extreme loyalty towards Apple. I'm sure it would take a major disaster for us to turn away from Apple. I was more referring to the typical Apple customer. As for the why wait. Apple can't release products every 6 months. One they probably don't have the manpower to release an iPad every 6 months and secondly it would loose the excitement and appeal of Apple events. Products would become mediocre upgrades and not the revolutionary new product people have come to expect from Apple. Overall if you look at the big picture this is a small drop in the ocean long term wise and a bit of fall out is expected but to those who are directly affected is their view on Apple going to change? Will it put off people from adopting early, will they instead say I might as well wait in case a better product comes out 6 months later.

I think this is a more a strategic launch than a routine product update. Kinda like the intel transition but this time all the apps still work.

Eh...I'm a little miffed but Apple might make a token gesture, we'll see (I'm betting no).
Luckily, iPad 3 performs better than its benchmarks suggest. I'd have preferred an A6X of course but it wasn't ready for prime time in March. I can deal.
Limited Edition new iPad owners will get over it. Strategically this is a far better move than Apple price dropping iPhone 1 $200 for the holidays. Apple indeed is slamming the gas pedal with iPad 4 and the competition will feel the heat all winter. Longer-term, this is a savvy move.

Spindo, so you think Apple should do what? This is nonsense. Everyone who owns an ipad3 loves it, this did not change that. People buy at Christmas knowing a refresh will probably come 2 1/2 months later in March, you do not see those people up in arms. New models are a fact of life, why is it that people like you feel they are owed something because a newer version, which is a minimal upgrade, came out after their purchase.

I, too, have the new iPad, purchased on first day of release. I am not upset by the recent "new new iPad." Products get upgraded all the time - consumer electronics and computers especially. I'm not upset when Audi releases a new A4. My 2001 model is still great!
When people ask me if they should get the current model of a product or wait for the next (better) one that will come out in 6 months or a year, I tell them if they always wait for the next, best thing, they will never buy.
The "old new iPad" didn't suddenly get worse.
Apple basically had to introduce this newer version to get the Lightning connector into all their freshest iOS models. The upgraded chips is a bit of a bonus and helps justify to the masses this out of cycle upgrade.

You misunderstand me, I don't feel Apple owe me anything I have an iPad I bought in March I won't personally be complaining I was simply playing devils advocate. Weather you or I like it or not certain customers who bought the earlier iPad are going to complain. I'm not discussing if they have a right to complain because logically they don't. Like you quite rightly said new products are a fact of life deal with it. I was merely debating how Apple should deal with the storm in a teacup should they offer some sort of gesture just to keep those guys sweet or tell them to get stuffed. It does seem that some stores are allowing customers who bought more or less within 30 days to return and upgrade.

Apple has always released new models knowing some people that just purchased one of their products may have just missed out. A gripe from consumers for Macbook Pro's, iMacs, etc... SJ's mentioned during the iPhone 4 if folks wait for the next iteration they will be waiting indefinitely as technology moves so fast.
Although, I am reading Apple has made an announcement in the blog world that anyone that has purchased an iPad 3 within 30 days can trade it in free of charge for the iPad 4. Not sure if this was something that was done before, but news to me.

Another non-issue. Apple has an excellent return/exchange policy for folks who bought a product right at a product refresh. I'm pretty sure the stores have a bit of leeway on the exact number of days. I somehow doubt they'd refuse someone who came in on the 15th day. "You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it. For an Apple iPhone, you have 30 calendar days. Only items that have been purchased directly from Apple, either through the Apple Online Store or at an Apple Retail Store..."

Imagine someone who bought a top of the line PC in March. Say they bought it from Dell. Then in October Dell releases a new top of the line PC that has double the speed of the PC from March. Would the Dell purchaser be "mad" at Dell? That would make no sense. They might regret not waiting, but they can always purchase the October PC and sell the March PC on eBay or something. In the meantime, they had the use of the very best hardware for 6 months. The difference, of course: this is Apple. They annoyingly defy expectations. I can see someone who purchased from them in the past couple weeks being slightly annoyed, but they could return it for a refund and pre-order for delivery in November or December. The iPad mini is spectacular. Can't wait to get up at 3am to complete my pre-order!

I'll definitely be giving iPad mini a look at the Apple Store when it goes on display. Seems like a winner to me, and a HUMONGOUS winner in China and other countries where PCs are not as much, or not at all, the norm.

Just jumped into an Apple store and had a play with the new Ipad Mini, another home run for Apple. :-) Feels great in your hand, so light and thin! Resolution is fine, text is better than the big brother Ipad2 due to smaller size with same pixels.
Played a quick game and performance was great, just so so light and nimble, totally different feel to the Ipad.
I arrived at around 8:40, there were still around 30 people lining up outside the store, which opened at 8, so not as bad as Iphone 5, but interest still very strong.
Going to be great xmas gift!

Received white iMini first. Perfect size for my needs, will likely sell the full size iPad. Love the lightning cable - found myself checking the orientation! Never need to do that again. Restored from a backup of the iPad-3 without even a mention. I was worried about screen resolution and processor hiccups with a 'downgrade'. Also surprised that iTunes did not ask to be updated first. Really a great addition to the lineup.

iTunes "sucks" but in some ways it does just work. It generally won't demand you update to the next point release before you can do stuff like browse the iTunes Store or perform backup/restore/setups with iOS devices.

IPad Mini arrived a couple of hours ago. It feels great but will take some getting used to. I have a regular sized iPad also. Portability is fantastic. Setting up took a little longer than anticipated but pretty simple. I heard so much criticism about their being no retina display that I almost didn't order. To be honest, I can't really see the difference between my this and my larger iPad or my iPhone 5. It will take some time to sort out when Ill use this one or the larger. The one thing that pissed me off though; not including a cable?

news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57544771-37/apples-vanishing-ipad/The picture in this article shows why I like Apple as a company. The iPad mini will hurt the sales of the regular iPad but Apple doesn't care. They are not afraid to take chances to expand their market and sell great devices to as many people as possible. I would not be surprised if the iPad mini outsells the iPad over the long term.

I finally saw the new iPad mini in comparison and predict massive success in long-term.
Small store in Wisconsin was packed. One sales associate said it was an average day, not much different from previous months <<-- whatever that means.
