It ain't just novelty. It's a really good tablet. The screen is a weakness of sorts, but (1) cramming a Retina Display into that thing is no small feat of engineering/power management/thinness (I agree, it probably shouldn't take more than a year for Apple to improve the display somehow) and (2) the iPad mini has so much more to trade on than iPod mini ever did.
Amazing portability (the iPad 4 felt like a brick by comparison). iPhone 5-class build quality (iPad 5 Chamfered/"Fully Embedded Screen" Edition™? Sooner than later, I think). iPad-class battery life. LTE and better cameras. Siri. AirPlay. Quite a few things iPad 2 doesn't have. Meanwhile, all iPod mini really was was smaller.
An improved display is kinda needed for next year, but for this year? iPad mini will do just fine, I think. If iPad mini can sway Retina Display users like me, imagine what it can do for first-time tablet buyers.

After reading my guess is 1 million shares, the million dollars is not enough to impact a firm. I still do not see how this could have caused much harm if all they hold are shares. It seems as though once WS smelled blood in the water they pounced. They placed an order for shares they couldn't cover. They were hoping for a bounce in the 72 hour cover period to pick up some quick change. They didn't get, and are now BK.

What I mean is that it is a remarkable device in a class of its own despite the shortcoming of an average screen in a world of hi-res displays. It was so good that after playing with one for 10 minutes I wanted to buy it - something I never felt with the 9.7" iPad.

Gregg, why not have both? One brand new iPad and iPad Mini, and one year old model of each device. There is overlap but there are also different target consumers for each device. We've seen the lower cost older device business model work extremely well with iPhones so why not do the same with iPads? Production costs will be low and it may help ease some of the supply problems that are the norm with new Apple products.
Just as a casual observation, a lot of my friends are interested now in refurbished iPad 3s, because it hits the size/performance/cost sweet spot for them.

true confessions time. I used my mini on and off yesterday and was enjoying it so much..great to do emails/imessages, good reader capability, etc. late last evening I tried some of the apps I use that are generated by the companies ...the bank , scottrade, that sort of thing. Because of the level of clarity I'm spoiled by and accustomed to with the iP5 and the iPad3 I was really disappointed. I put the devices side by side on the same apps/pics , etc and decided I wanted a mini w/retina. So I packed it up in its box, printed out return labels, and will return it on Monday. I had also purchased a 12w charger for the iPad3...that had shown up on Monday. Absolutely no increase in charging rate vs. the 10 w, that goes back too. First time I've ever sent anything back to the mothership. I'll be first in line on line when the mini w/retina is released next time around. And soon the new iMacs!

Rosie, it would be wrong of me to suggest you list it on eBay and see what kind of bids you get for shipment with overnight delivery.

I can see Apple ending the practice of continuing to produce last year's iPad, in favor of a more expensive iPad mini with retina display. I can't. We have 3 ipads in this house and none of us want anything smaller. Honestly, if they made one a little bigger i would be happy. In March I expect the ipad2 to be discontinued. What annoys me about the media is they do not get that the tablet market is in its early years and will grow to +100 million units/yr. AMZN/GOOG can have the low end. Those buyers do not want to pay for quality and want everything for free. MSFT is going to have a hard go of it with the surface. It looks so thick and I am sure it is made out of plastic. Because of that I don't see many people choosing it over an ipad. People are jumping to conclusions about long term trends with the mini/ipad. The mini is in its initial launch, writing off the full size ipad is a mistake IMO.

Be prepared to wait 1-2 years for iPad mini with a Retina Display. If Apple settles for a merely improved display, maybe not as long, but it sure seems like 2048x1536 or nothing in iPad-land.

iPad will continue to be the flagship/development platform for the iPad family. But sales mix could easily be a different story. Which is also partly why I wonder if Apple would ever put a 2048 x 1536 display on an iPad mini without at least adding a compelling big-iPad-only feature (aside from more storage or better cameras or something) to separate the two. Well, that's for Apple to figure out anyway.

I went to apple store to try the iPad mini and iPod Nano today as I ordered the white iPad mini online and the blue ipod nano and wanted to try them in person. The apple store was sold out of white ipad minis and even sold their demos due to high demand. They only had demo black/slate ipad minis. I like the product and going to the store helped ease any concerns with the stock. Easily the busiest store in the mall and I even saw a few guys actually buy the 27" iMac haha I guess they had no idea new ones are coming very soon haha. I talked to salesperson and she provided a pretty clear message that ipad mini white sold out quickly and has seen lots of interest from costumers. One other thing I will mention is how successful apple has been at branching their products to new users. She mentioned that the classes they provide costumers on how to use the products are always full with waiting lists and the most popular class for seniors to come learn how to use apple products is for the iPad. Also the classes for kids for iPad are always full as well.

Was at the Montréal Sté-Catherine store today
Mini is sold out. Heard that the béat to do is call watch day and Côme as soon as There is stock a bit like it was when the ip4 was out.
Stock was pack people buying all items.
Make me wonder what is wrong with this picture? A store full and a stock that go south?

Stopped by the new Palo Alto store today and they were jam packed. It's a beautiful store with the glass construction. Minis were sold out. After playing with it I agree with all the comments here. This is gonna be huge. I absolutely love the new form factor. My kids also want to trade in their iPad 3's for the mini. Game play is so much easier for their small hands. They don't care about the non retina issue since games look the same. I do notice the difference with text but as long as you don't read up close the difference is minimal if at all. I can see myself using this exclusively for my reading and browsing. The reg iPad always felt a bit too heavy for me. I would use my iPhone more for casual reading but now it will be on the mini. For those that haven't already, you have to hold it and play with it to see what I mean.

I'm getting minis for three parental units for Christmas. On my planet, we only have two, but good news anyway! Has any of the members from this site began to post their Q1 estimates? You do realize that such "estimates" are total WAG-ing? Not even Tim Cook really knows. These "estimates" are like weekly calls - part of AAPL's problem. I honestly think they are all bullshit.

I agree. I personally don't pay any attention to estimates and just wait for the numbers to come out. I then think about them independently of how they compare to the estimates. It's not like Apple acts predictably anyway based on whether they meet, exceed, or miss their own or analysts' estimates. So my feeling is...why bother? I'd rather pay more attention to near term technicals and long term fundamentals than what a few random people who really don't know much are guessing.

Amazon's price-to-earnings ratio is now 2,767. Apple's is 13 P/E doesn't matter much in certain circumstances...basically when a company is losing money or just over breakeven. Yahoo says AMZN's EPS is 0.08, so at a P/E of 100 it would only be $8/share, or a marketcap of 3.6B. While I think AMZN is very overpriced, I also think that would be too low. IMO I'd expect them to be fairly valued in the 10-50B range, instead of 106B where they are currently....but that's why I don't own any AMZN.

I think Apple will update the iPad mini with a retina display, new processor, and updated camera, by June 2013. iPad 2 will be gone by then. The entry level price for the current iPad mini will drop to $249. All of this is a WAG.

Just got back from a shopping trip in Glendale CA. For those not familiar it's a strange situation with two Apple stores that are about a 5 minute walk from each other ... one in the Glendale Galleria and the other across the street at the Americana (A very nice outdoor shopping plaza). In any case we were in the Apple store at the Americana and I got my first chance to handle a iPad mini ... I was simply blown away. I read somewhere (possibly on this board) that this iPad feels more like Apple nailed it compared to the original size and after playing around with it I would agree !
The store was full of people and it seemed like I heard nothing but praise as I stood around the display trying to listen in and get a feel for how people are reacting to it. It was also SOLD OUT and they did not have any for sale ... a associate told me that they get shipments in every morning but they do not last long. Don't believe the bullshit you are reading about iPad sales being disappointing .... they will sell plenty of them for the holiday quarter ... my kids also played around with it and my older daughter wants one ..... so will EVERY kid this Christmas.
Finally, as we walked into a Barnes and Noble we were met with someone who resembled a carnival barker talking about the new NOOK HD ... EVERY sentence he was screaming was a direct comparison with the iPad .... some of which I would question and started to but I could tell the guy was getting annoyed with me so I just shut up. Then as we walked into the Galleria there was a Microsoft Surface store in the middle of the mall ... they were generating a lot of traffic and the people I was with tried it out as did I. The first thing I noticed was they have at least tried to come up with a original UI .... although it reeked of the the usual Windows squared off look which I detest. I didn't play with it for very long ... tried to surf the internet for about 3 minutes and got frustrated with the browser .... I've never owned a PC so it felt pretty uncomfortable for me but I can see how PC users might warm up to it ... although I think it's simply " A day late and a dollar short".
In any case, there is one thing I can say for sure .. Mobile is the future as are tablets and the competition is stiff .... I'm really glad Apple has a nice head start but they don't have much room to stumble ....

What kind of murse are you going to put yours in Red? ;D Finally got a chance to see the iPhone5 today and the new touch and of course the Mini. Wow! THE xmas present this year for sure. I just hope the stock rebounds by then, I have a 3 kids that are dying for one of those and it'll be a little easier to justify.

I have no apple store within 100 miles but I will share my iphone 5 story :-). This evening my wife and I went and ordered out very first smart phones... iPhone 5's from Verizon. I asked if they were selling well, the reply was "they are selling very well". We got a ship by date of Nov 16 but we were told most people are getting them sooner. From that I would conclude shipping times are dropping (supply getting better). We are really looking forward to tossing our Samsung flip phones.. We may even have a "Welcome to the future for the Carons" party :-)

I have thought a lot about apple these past few days. Nothing has changed with the fundamentals of apple. Apple is the greatest tech company in the world. They revolutionized many products. Without the iphone would we have smart phones as they are today?
Apple is selling a new product and has refreshed most of their product line so the products are actually better now. A new product *the ipad mini* means that they will get money that they would have other wise not gotten. Yet apple is punished for inovating and making wonderful products. Really makes no sense..
Im staying put and not listening to the a** hole analysts who want apple to fail. I am now red for the year and I really really hate the feeling of being underwater, I think apple will recover and by the end of the year apple should be in at least the mid 600s.
If apple drops anymore it will have a p/e of 12.. which is just insane

Between the cost of paypal and ebay fees and adding the 8.3% sales tax I paid there are several "buy it now" mini's on ebay pretty much out pricing any potential profit. ebay is great for selling so many things but of late Apple things are no longer one of them. thanx for the good thoughts!
