Ah, the shell game, move the tax away from directly on the individual so they don't realize they are the actual payer. "What, me worry about large corporate taxes, not my problem I have my own taxes to pay."

As expected, huge huge backlash about the headphone jack. Unfortunately now because of the impressive W1 chip, people are complaining that Apple is "forcing" Airpods and Beats on them, even though that's not at all the truth. It'll be an interestingness few months ahead...

Today's $2 drop might be tied in part to an announcement this morning that Apple won't be announcing first weekend sales. Couldn't get link to post right, but story is up at Reuters.

This has been the case from day 1. If anything we are getting closer to the point where supply exceeds demand, and that's really why they're stopping. Do they think we're stupid? They're stopping because they can no longer control the number.

THE AIRPOD is a foolish product.
It is the worst product designed since the iPod shaped like a pack of Wrigley's gum.
The average AIRPOD user will lose one or both of them. $80 or $160 LOST.
It is similar to designing a remote control SO small that the consumer spends minutes looking for it.
I can't wait for the AIRPOD accessory. It will be a 12 inch silicone strap with a loop on both ends that connect to the AIRPODS.
(THAT IS MY MILLION DOLLAR IDEA FOR TODAY.... GO RUN WITH IT!)

There are pros and cons to both, but I agree that having a very thin, very light cord connecting the two would have been a better choice. The problem with the cords on existing Bluetooth sets is that they also carry the bulky battery and controls, and the weight tugs on the earbuds. Airpods don't need this so the cord could be thin, light and very unobtrusive. I suspect Apple will push out different models of Airpods over time, either through Airpods branding or Beats. Beats already has a few interesting options.

I still have and use my iPod nano, I think it was the best of the iPod designs. The AppleTV remote is about the same size and I don't remember too many complaints. As far as the average user losing them, I wish I COULD lose a few sets of headphones. They seem to breed when you put them in a drawer The wireless headphones are an important step toward allowing people to listen to music and phone calls using only the iWatch. I guess for the Luddites amoung us, Fisher Price can come up with something appropriately sized

Ever since VXAPL dropped to 20, it has been difficult to make much money in AAPL options. With the option traders off using other stocks, we don't get the movement we used to see. Sort of a circular argument, I know, but still it looks what we got what we wished for. As Teresa James said, "I've heard that God can punish you by answering your prayers". Maybe things will pick up when the Jan 19 leaps are available 2019 LEAPS coming Monday

I'm glad they're discontinuing announcing first weekend sales because I think they're going to be loooowww. It's going to take people a long while to get used to the headphone jack idea, especially since apple didn't give any convincing benefit to doing it. Regular people, the ones who don't read apple blogs, are talking about iPhone 7 like, "oh the main difference is it doesn't have a headphone jack." That's bad.

I personally am glad to see the headphone jack go. I considered it a design flaw. If you carry the phone in your pocket the jack eventually gets full of pocket lint and has to be cleaned out with a pin. Maybe I am the only person this happened too, but good riddance.

I think a massive PR campaign is needed, focusing on performance, camera and battery life. As amazing as it seems to be, I've heard exactly zero people talk about the A10 Fusion or the increase in battery life. Apple needs to control the message here.

Glad they will not release numbers. Leaves more room for moves like today.
The sell off everyone expected yesterday is going on today. Expect us to recover and be range bound until the 16th.
A nice run quick up after that, then a revisit of the 200 MA if we are lucky.
This phone will break records and overall sales will do well in Q1. The drop in price for Apple Watch and iPads will help. But the stealth product will be the AirPods. First adopters will give us at least an extra billion in sales.

Will the airpods work with older phones? Almost certainly not. No W1 chip in the old iPhones. At least that we're aware of.I take that back. I looked on Apple's site and it seems it will. With what devices, they don't specify.

And yet, i see relatively little outrage from the Galaxy Note owner community and a big shrug from much of the tech press. I cannot imagine what the headlines would be if this were happening with an Apple device. Honestly, I think that removal of the headphone jack has caused more controversy than firestarter Galaxy devices.

... This has been the case from day 1. If anything we are getting closer to the point where supply exceeds demand, and that's really why they're stopping... Demand has always been higher than supply from day 1. Announcing weekend sales serve its purpose of generating momentum in the initial years. As time passed, it becomes challenging to beat last year's number because of surprised component shortages, and has to stockpile more inventory before launch plus the expensive air freights to meet the weekend target. Before the launch, there are rumors that the Apple event may be cancelled because of surprised low yield of certain critical components. With this announcement, while there is short-term punishment of the share price, there are a few advantages: 1. Can do away with expensive air freight, no need to pay for urgent freight charges. 2. No need to stockpile too early, unexpected manufacturing and QC issues can mean these early stockpile has to be discharged (or refurnished)... cost money. 3. Since supply is always less than demand, might as well do away with the practice of announcing weekend sales, save all the heartache rush-rush.

Last night at the gym I looked around and did a little informal survey. I counted 23 people using their mobile phones with 14 using bluetooth headphones, 3 using wired headphones, and the rest using no headphones (presumably reading email, social media, playing games, other apps, etc). Oh, and two weeks ago there was one a$$hole using the built-in speaker on his phone (it was resting on the floor near where he was doing his set ... he's lucky nobody dropped a weight on it by accident). The last time I used my headphone jack was the day before I received my first set of bluetooth earbuds in the mail.

I just got a message from my good friend, Kevin who's heavily invested in AAPL ($400K+) with his 401K and IRAs. Unfortunately, I keep having to talk Kevin down from the ledge because much of his 401K purchases were at ~$115. Kevin: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-09-08/apple-won-t-announce-iphone-7-opening-weekend-sales-numbers?cmpid=yhoo.headlineHey perfect - let's not release opening weekend sales numbers on the iPhone 7. Kinda like the watch - good thinking That'll make a good point My response: Did you even READ the article: From the link => 'The company said Thursday in a statement that it won’t continue the practice because it’s “now at a point where we know before taking the first customer pre-order that we will sell out of iPhone 7.”'I’m GLAD they’re not releasing the numbers. I hope they stop releasing iPhone numbers at the earnings reports as well. Revenue, income and a few others need to be included but not total numbers sold. Otherwise there are always comparisons to last quarter’s totals. Or a year ago’s totals. And if the numbers are lower, no matter what the reason, Apple's doomed. It’s ridiculous. From the link => By not releasing opening weekend sales numbers, Apple is holding back a key metric that some investors have used to determine the success of an iPhone launch. Some investors. Those investors shouldn’t be using first weekend numbers for the same reason they shouldn’t be counting people in line to determine how popular the device is going to be. People don’t need to line up anymore because they can preorder and then just drop into the store to pick it up. And since lines outside the Apple store aren't needed anymore, I think it reduces the urgency to order early. Instead of lining up the first weekend, many people are content to order a few days later. That’s what we’ll be doing. So, IMO weekend sales numbers aren't relevant anymore and I'm glad to see them gone.

I'm searching for the courage to believe in this stock. I would find it very difficult to stay invested in a stock that required courage to stay invested. But I have to say, for me, looking at this table occasionally supports my continuing confidence to stay invested. Obviously past performance is no guarantee of future performance, but it's easy to forget that this latest pullback in stock price is nowhere near as bad as the one in 2007-2009 or even the one in 2012-2013.

I have no doubt they'll sell out of at least the black models, but I'm thinking they couldn't produce enough to reach 13M the first weekend. Although I agree it's useless information, to stop it this year for such a controversial device doesn't make sense unless they aren't going to beat the number.
Would have been better to do it next year, and I'm also thinking it would have better to introduce the Airpods and W1 chip this year while maintaining the jack, and removing the jack next year. The optics of it would have been so much better amid a complete redesign, and would have given people time to digest. But I guess the things like battery life and improved haptic engine would have been less impressive if the jack was kept.

I'm glad they're discontinuing announcing first weekend sales because I think they're going to be loooowww. That is just not possible. With all the phones they sell each quarter, and the size of the installed base, the first weekend sale is purely a function of how many they can manufacture in advance. As the volume gets bigger (and yes, it is likely to get bigger) as years go by, manufacturing enough to cover all weekend sales with leftovers will require starting manufacturing a lot in advance with huge stockpiles, because production lines will be dimensioned in order to keep up a steady production matching what they expect to sell in steady state. Therefore, first weekend sales for this product and this company for the foreseeable future will be purely a function of how early they want to start producing, and how big a stockpile they want to build. It is therefore reasonable that going forward they want to both (1) keep this data secret, because it has to do with how they manage manufacturing and (2) allow themselves more flexibility about what they want to do with the organization of their production, stockpiles and inventories. As it is now, if they kept announcing first weekend sales, they would always need to increase production and stockpile more every year in order to show a bigger number for first weekend sales every year. This is a futile and somewhat stupid exercise, but it would be what everyone expects if they were to keep announcing first weekend sales.

I think Apple never intended to sell the phone so early in the month. I think they pushed the sale date forward to take advantage of the window that Samsung has opened with the Note 7 recall. If I am correct Apple does not have that many iPhones in stock so why disclose the first weekend sales? This also explains why their guidance for 4Q is relatively weak. They probably did not expect to have too many days of iPhone 7 sales for the quarter.
