Poignant....but truth is that this - like most all else in life - is to strike the right balance of both. And most importantly, to compromise - regardless of ideals or egos - every relationship should be about some level of compromise. Just my two unpolitical cents. Even though I fully agree with you on this, without compromise, you should allow some room for compromise on your position that your two cents are "unpolitical". ;D You are seriously reading too much into this - it is weird that as a female I need to tell males to check their emotion at the door - but compromise is key. Maybe being a spouse and having a family gives you a deeper understanding (hopefully) of the art, or perhaps to your point, of the politics of compromise. To say that I am espousing my political views because I want to bring resolution is nonsensical to me. We need to move on with our lives and decisions need to be made....unless I misinterpreted what you were trying to say?

It's "don't get caught in the debt trap in the first place", it never ends well. Most important lesson for anyone, any organization, and company, and state, and country, and the world.

It's "don't get caught in the debt trap in the first place", it never ends well. Most important lesson for anyone, any organization, and company, and state, and country, and the world. If you look at the top company's in the world, they have no debt. Individuals should strive to be debt free. Only then do you have true financial freedom. I know lots of people who have lots of property/cars/houses/things, they all also have lots of debt. (a persons debt is usually in lockstep with their income, more money you make, the more debt you have) What happened in 2008 was a debt problem. When the people were buying the houses they could afford them at the time of purchase. When the variable interest rates went up along with the doubling of their gas bill, they were doomed.

OMG, you want to guarantee that people can't pass on wealth to their heirs. Taxing unrealized gains, are you serious? People work so they can make a better life for their children. Just because they die, why should that money go to the government? No. See me in the Death and Taxes thread, here

The US Thanksgiving holiday is really early this year (November 22nd). This allows for a few extra shopping days before December 25th. The majority of the new product lineup will be available for this entire period. The only exception that I am aware of is the 27" iMac.
This seems like a great strategy for taking advantage of the extra holiday shopping days this year. Perhaps the extra, higher than average, revenue days will somewhat offset the 14th week of the year ago quarter. Unfortunately, I don't have any data to justify this. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.
Any thoughts or data to support or refute this?

I can imagine there's a minor offset. That said, the mood of the country is more mixed. Overall, no effect for having extra days in the Black Friday to Dec 25th.

Make no mistake JD, I want Apple to defend itself. What I don't want it to do is lose sight of the big picture. I do not want them to settle with SS or Google. That is where I was them to focus their legal actions. Apple is doing what I have begged for for several years and that is move away from SS as a supplier. Apple pays SS billions of dollars a year. i would like that to become 0 in 3 years. Apple can work with other company's to provide their needs. In the case of Sharp it appears that Apple has become a partner. If it is what I think, Apple has purchased the plants with cash and worked out long term leasing deals. It will make Sharp viable and remove cash flow problems. I believe a deal with TSM has been done also. TC, will use the cash wisely. +1

Is this the week we see iPhone 5 availability drop from 3-4 weeks on the Apple website? My guess is yes. However, I did read an article stating that Apple likes their existing reservation strategy because it drives people to the store where they can make additional purchases.

I wouldn't go that far. It's more controlled and consumer-friendly for initial periods of very high demand, yes.
Remember, there aren't many accessories for people to _buy_ yet. And Apple's general approach is the soft sell.
So it's agreeable to Apple but hardly a core strategy to move all the iPhones it can IMHO.

They're definitely allocating to stores preferentially. Personally I think it's this: a bit of lead time on the web just gets a shrug from the purchaser; out of stock at the mall risks purchase of an Android device instead. Anyway, I certainly don't think they'll hold back online orders more than necessary to keep stores stocked.

I pre-ordered my black iPad mini the day it went on sale at 5:00 am EST. I have yet to receive it and was sent an email saying that I should be receiving it on or about November 21st. Doesn't that sound way too long for someone who pre-ordered? I should just pick it up at the store next time - my local mall had plenty of black in stock and was only sold out of white.

Yes, it does sound too long, but I wonder if it's logistical disruption from the storm?

Might have been a weather-related disruption.
If you want a Wi-Fi, just do the in-store pickup option after you cancel the other order, right?

Don't think it was storm disruption - I was getting my mail and ups packages the day after the storm. Was there something I missed about the cellular versions taking longer?

Cellular versions don't ship yet. That's why.
Mid-November continues to be a moving target.

???up???
from Nick Nansen today:
Sometimes in trading, sure things just do not happen. Apple should have found a bottom at a 13-13.5 PE ratio which was 574 to 596. For whatever reason, it just did not stop there. Instead it continued to sell off to a low of 533.72 on Friday. Instead of stopping at 13.5 times trailing earnings, it put in a low on Friday of 12.08 times trailing earnings. That should absolutely be the low and Apple should rally starting Monday morning. This is trading, so anything is possible.

Man I blew through my dry powder way too early this time around, was out when we hit 595. My account value is down about 50% from when we were at 705. My earliest positions are Feb 2013 so I still have time for them to be profitable, but I'm definitely feeling the pinch.
I'm thinking about selling 2% of my account on Monday for a 50% loss and buying some Jan 13 620/625 calls. They cost about a dollar, maximum profit at 5 dollars would be 400 percent, but I would happily sell them early for 3 dollars.
50% loss now for potential 200-400% profit by January. Hm ...

Huh?
Y'sure Nansen's post didn't say that sure things don't exist in trading? Or even investing?
That's Rule #1 for market participants. 100% of invested/traded capital is at risk of total loss until you sell.

People start Christmas shopping way before "Black friday". I had to go kicking and screaming into a Toy R Us yesterday, the place was packed.

So there was no benefit of the doubt to give...
The broken record cannot help itself! No such thing _as_ a sure thing in the market. To suggest otherwise is dangerous.

Hon Hai's 60-inch TV joins sales war 2012/11/11 20:47:53 Taipei, Nov. 11 (CNA) Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. rolled out its 60-inch LCD television in Taiwan on Sunday at CyberMart, at half the price of other brands of the same size on the market. Hon Hai's 60-inch model, launched jointly with Sharp Corp. of Japan, was priced at NT$38,800 (US$1,336.5) on contract with Taiwan's largest telecom company Chunghwa Telecom Co., and cable TV operator Kbro Co. According to CyberMart, one of Hon Hai's retail businesses, the relatively low price of the 60-inch TV has attracted great interest at its stores. Since pre-ordering began Nov. 9, the CyberMart store in Taipei's Living Mall has received orders for 300 units, it said Sunday. Local retailers have launched a series of sales promotions for large TV sets since Hon Hai announced a couple months ago that it planned to market a 60-inch LCD model, in cooperation with local service providers. Tsann Kuen Enterprise Co., one of the country's biggest 3C product retail chains, said the TVs being promoted include Chimei's 50-inch LED set, and Vizio's 65-inch 3D LED and 55-inch LCD models. It is estimated that Tsann Kuen will sell over 12,000 TV sets during its four-day sales promotion, which was launched on Nov. 9, according to the company's general manager Chang Yueh-lung. Apple essentially guided to over 25% normalized YOY revs growth in its second transitional quarter in a row. When comparing to a normalized Q1 2012 that was pretty much "set up" for success given iPad's adoption curve and iPhone 4S being ready to sell in giant quantities.
And that's before removing the sandbags, really. Not bad for a $150B company.

How far Sharp has fallen.
Well, hopefully it's still at the top in display tech. So critical for Apple moving forward and Apple needs every supplier it can get.

Personally I think that after TC removed him from his position he should then have given him free reign in his own apple skunkworks to do whatever he wanted - his work with developing iOS to the monster success it has been should not be forgotten.
