I agree that dividends are the wrong answer. There are opportunities out there that the cash should be ready to pounce on. We all agree in theory as traders: buy low, sell high.
If the Dividend is that big, there will be no chance for buy low of some corporation or patent.
Huge dividends are flat out wrong.

When a company has the balance sheet of Apple it should send some of the cash to shareholders. I am against special dividends because they rape a balance sheet. As Apple's cash flow increases the dividend should also rise. Again, back to the best use, buy the darn shares back. Long term security.

Steady dividends keep me invested, most certainly. AAPL cash generation is becoming almost comical, with the exception of 75% of it being offshore cash generation. I do not, nor cannot find a stock that is generating the cash flow growth AAPL is able to accomplish. Not even XOM.
I feel fairly confident we will see 10 plus percent dividend increases on YOY basis, maybe starting Jan Quarterly announcement. 2.90 forward.
We need the folks in congress to decide what they are going to do with the trillions offshore. I do not hold out hope on this with the current administration. I surely do not think we will see anything till mid spring at best. Even then, I am of the dismal mind that it gets done.
I also think the talk of "Special Dividend" before year end 2012 is nigh on impossible, though the street seems to be pushing for this. What the "Street" should be pushing is AAPL deciding to buyback common at ever increasing rates before the new year. Let's hope the Braeburn group in Vegas has their optics aligned correctly with the sun and the stars.
I really love the eat your own dogwood ideology this entails, and the street will see it that way too.
13% P/E also has a really sweet buy sound to it for those in the know, and if anyone should be in the know it is Braeburn Capital!

There would be serious disruption in overseas banks if all that money came back. It will not, only partially.
