This stat is the single best indicator about how Apple's quarterly earnings will turn out. Clearly, there is now enough product for China Telecom and China Unicom to add meaningfully to this quarter's numbers while everyone in 80 other countries can have an iPhone 5 if they want one. Improved production numbers insures GM will not be a drag this quarter, probably now closer to 39.5% in my model... It's looking good.....very good.

Eric Jackson tweeted this piece of data this morning:
"China Telecom received 5000 pre-orders for the iPhone 5 in Beijing in first 24 hours."

Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore this morning:
"However," he concludes, "despite the wishes of many investors, the probability of a special Apple dividend appears low as we believe the company is more focused on building a track record of predictable dividend growth (vs. one time lump payment) and share buybacks. Although a special dividend would be a big short-term positive development, it appears unlikely at this point in time as special dividends do not tend to have a lasting benefit to shareholders. Irrespective of its near term dividend policy, we think AAPL remains attractively valued."
He is also reiterating his buy on it with a $800 PT

Please let me know if I'm missing out on something. Don't know how representative Beijing is for the rest of China but shouldn't that number be at least 3-4x greater? Apparently CT received more than 200000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4s in one week.

Saturday, despite the cold and snow, there were many shoppers out on the walking streets surrounding Amagertorv Square in Copenhagen. I was hanging out at one of my favorite places, the Cafe Europa. I noticed many of the shoppers with phones to their ears, and decided to count as many phones (iPhones vs other) that I could until I got tired, or I ran out of money paying for my refills.
In less than two hours, i counted 168 phones (yes, I can be a bit compulsive, sometimes,) and of those, 162 were clearly iPhones, two HC Droids, and the other four of unknown make.
One of the reasons it was easy to see the iPhones, few were in protective covers, and those that were in a case, were still recognizable.
There must have been thousands of other phones in people's pockets, including iPhone, but the iPhone use factor was huge.
Just wanted to share. It gave me great pleasure to waste my time this way! ;D

Small amusing aside...
The TV listing for Thursday's Rock Center lists "Apple CEO Jim Cook"; you know, Stan Jobs's successor.

premarket just shot up a bit more, now @ 594 (+1.5%), just as cramer etc were mentioning retesting the 605 50% retracement level.

I do not read much into that. I attribute this (unfounded) story to people not wanting to wait on the 5 and the 4/4S presented very good opportunities. News flash to the author, the GM on the 4/4S is very good, even at the discounted prices. LOL It may lower the ASP with no impact to margin.

It is almost like I wrote these same words just recently. Chris Whitmore must be reading my posts. ;D I loooooooove the last part where he say he thinks Apple will focus on sustained dividends and buybacks. Had not been a fan of his until now. Go Chris go with your $800 price target.
