Bullshit. 50% of iPad mini buyers would have purchased a 9.7" iPad? No way. The majority of iPad mini owners would have purchased a non-Apple 7" tablet or have purchased nothing at all. That's anecdotal on my end, but I've yet to run into someone who would have bought a 9.7" if it weren't for the mini. Then you have people like me who will own both. And yes, 26M iPads would be great for this quarter. Not sure if we can get there given the constraints on the mini.

Well that was a very emotional 40 minutes. Now, about that bounce... Yes. At the open I was thinking we'd drift lower all day and bounce tomorrow. But the 40 minute orgy has me agreeing with the Bird.

Some perspective on yet another gloomy day:
Assuming a 50M number, Apple is selling 6.4 iPhones every second. The only reason that number isn't higher is because they can't be made fast enough. This is a device with a ~$300 profit margin.
Now smile.

Don't I recall that last summer -post 530 - that 560 was support for a time? Of course that was two earnings reports ago...

would a special dividend announcement do this to the stock? im just trying to think if some type of news leaked to be responsible for this slaughter on a relatively calm day everywhere else.

I think its getting a little late in the month for a special dividend to be announced. By the end of next week I would give the rumor 0% probability. And if is announced in the next 2-3 days it will be apparent that there was a leak somewhere.

Would be real nice if TC could throw us a bone and leak something really positive to one of their favorites that covers AAPL. Are they allowed to pre-announce?
The whole insiders selling thing is such BS as any rational American is doing the same thing to position themselves for tax policy changes in the future.

Wow! Moves like this on no news really show how the market can just take one stock and toss it one way or another.
I like that roller coaster metaphor. Of course, it always ends up where it started.

Wow that hurts! Was there any pre-announcement i.e. a warning that this was coming (not that familiar as to what happens when margin requirements are raised on an individual stock)

COR clearing came out and issued a public statement saying that they are raising margin requirements for AAPL from 30% to 60% due to concentration and that they will be putting another statement out later (Mary Thompson CNBC) She also said that MS, JPM, GS, and others said that THEY WILL NOT be following suit.

I have lost so much today and for the last few months that I am afraid to look, but this margin thing will have an ephemeral impact. Those whose margins are raised will be selling to meet margin requirements, then APPL will be in such a compelling fundamental position that it will have to go up. However, I do not see it getting over 600 until after Jan OPEX because of the call wall at 600. IMHO.
