Or is it a temptation to improve one's cost basis, so people are not re-buying, or at least waiting to re-buy until they feel the selling is finished? It's this, I think. And I can't blame them. I'd be doing the same. I think we need to get over 600 before retail starts jumping back in.

I'd be doing the same. I think we need to get over 600 before retail starts jumping back in. The certainty is that rates are going up - so you sell. Then you wait for the selling to subside because you think others are doing the same....once convinced it's over (and I'm not sure where that is but probably above 590-600) you get rocket fuel to be back in. And if you think like "lance" that we are in a 500-700 - you may miss the first 95-100 pts but you capture the next 100. Not shabby. This is definitely what's going on IMHO

Redler tweeted that TC needs to do a 4 to 1 split. Couple that with a massive buy back (1/10 of the float) and it's game over for the bears.

CNBC's constant spotlight on Apple is not a good thing. Every MORON coming out of the woodwork to give their "expert" opinion on everything Apple .... sometimes you simply want to throw something at the screen .. but I'll wait until the Apple TV comes out ... then it's time to pull a Elvis !

I love the quote from Tim that "80% of our revenue comes from products that didn't exist 60 days ago" meaning the redesigned Iphones, Ipads, Macs. As noted, they didn't have to do that....could have lived with the older models and form factors for longer, spent less in redesign and still made a lot of money....but....not the Apple way.

Well we won't beat the 44.8m one day volume from Fri Nov 16th, but 40m today and 36.6m yesterday is a pretty massive 2-day Volume.

From the Business Week Tim Cook interview online:
"We want diversity of thought. We want diversity of style. We want people to be themselves. It’s this great thing about Apple. You don’t have to be somebody else. You don’t have to put on a face when you go to work and be something different. But the thing that ties us all is we’re brought together by values. We want to do the right thing. We want to be honest and straightforward. We admit when we’re wrong and have the courage to change."
Perhaps some will debate whether Apple has always truly exhibited these characteristics, whether under Jobs or Cook, but who can question its value as an aspiration?

Thanks for posting the link, Mav. Very informative interview. After the last few weeks of reading so many mindless "analysts" pontifications regarding "The End of Apple", it's refreshing to hear from Tim.

Mav, I read this first thing today. I'm quite impressed with Tim's management style. It's easy to accomplish great things when you surround yourself with great people and enable them to collaborate. I'm looking forward to the Brian Williams interview tonight as well. Despite the recent volatility, I'm still quite happy being fully invested in Apple and really don't see any better long term opportunities out there.

In the 30 minutes I have been watching cnbc, I have seen 3 negative apple stories, 2 of which mysteriously turned into Samsung is great stories. Why would they want a South Korean company to do better than an American one? Commies! ;D

I guess they are geniuses over at Samsung...and of course, at Fast Money. (I have been in the same room as Grasso - he cares more about his hair and his tan than wtf comes out of his mouth.)

Don't like today's action Puts me in mind of Monday ( Well at least things are better than yesterday and this morning). But this looks more like an oversold bounce than a reversal After today's action, I have to admit I am in agreement. I believe the 550 puts that expire tomorrow contributed significantly to the action today.

It seemed to me as though margin liquidations hit first thing in the morning, and those cheap shares were gobbled up... but no one wanted to pay any MORE than they had yesterday, so then we stalled.

EDIT: Buying 1/10th of the float is in part to reduce the supply of shares. It's through manipulation of the float that AMZN is squeezed upwards.

Sure, a split is "manipulation", but it seems to me that AAPL would no longer be a play thing to the EOs if the PPS were drastically lower. These double digit percentage swings in a matter of a few days are not reasonable, and they are scaring away potential investors. Maybe I'm entirely wrong though.

I'm not sure that in the end it would have the desired result of getting rid of the EOs from AAPL. It may impact the dynamics for a while, but it would still go back to trading the way it trades currently. As an aside, I do think AAPL investors have until the last few months been able to buy and forget. Now we are in a regime where things swing about more and it is causing no end of grief. It is worth pointing out that a lot of other stocks swing about too. It's just that most of us aren't watching them day-in, day-out so think it is specific to just AAPL.

Are we going to get an announcement today from Judge Koh? LOL, judges move in geologic time. On TV shows, you get a hearing and an order in the same day. In US District Court, we'll be lucky to have an order issued by 12/31. *** Excellent article with Tim Cook today. Like a good novel, you have to read it very closely and look for hidden meanings. And half- or even untruths, like this one: "So it wasn’t a matter of saying, “Strategically it’s important that we not work with company X.”" Ha ha ha, OK Tim. #ThermoNuclear *** And of course Apple needs to ramp up more units for a product release than it would need once supply reaches demand. Of course the media retards make it looks like somehow Apple overestimated demand by 20%. Idiots.

i have a question about all the 'tax selling' and I think we touched on it in the past since there is no wash rule on selling gains. If this was such a concern for someone to lock in their 15% cap gains tax now, yet they still wanted to hold Apple stock, wouldn't they just be selling their shares, and then immediately rebuying them after? This is what I will be doing before 12/31 with a few thousand shares held for nearly 20 years. Sell and buy back. Just hoping for a rally before I do. Unfortunately, CA's Prop 30 tax increase is retroactive - which should be unconstitutional somehow - so Jerry Brown already has his claws in me. But my shares will not be paying 2013 federal taxes.
