5 months ago my wife and I welcomed our first child into this world. For those of you with children I am sure you can attest. Seeing this tragedy unfold on TV and the internet brings tears to my eyes. Not only for the loss of such innocent life, but also for the lifetime of the pain and grief that the parents and families will have to live with. Thinking about something like this happening to my little boy just fills me with the greatest sadness I've ever felt.

Coming from a Canadian, I still find it unreal that citizens need access to Assault Rifles like this.

It's sickening and a punch to the gut - especially to parents. Just awful stuff.

Anyone seeing a H & S breakdown that seems to measure to $400. WTF Have measured downside into the 400s for a possible H&S for a while now. AAPL can't do that without taking the whole market down with it to some degree, though. Technicians, even those I think I respect, say AAPL is just a label to remove from a technical pattern. I'm not so sure. Would AMZN be "just" 30% off its ATHs if it were in technical breakdown? I dunno, ask NFLX. There are principles and then there are considerations affecting those principles (yes, fundamentals). Then there are people trying to force formations (macro H&S) that really don't fit well, like this one.

Damn, what a shitty day to wake up to.
Of course the share price is woefully underpriced, and I agree with others that it is likely to be tax related selling. AAPL has been up heavily for most of the last decade, so it makes sense that apple would suffer more than other stocks as long term investors cash out now - for a lot of people the who bought in the low three figures the difference in tax rates could equal more than a hundred dollars a share!
I don't think there is any problem with iPhone 5 demand, apple will still be producing every unit it can make through the end of the quarter, and there is a lot of channel to fill.
The iPad however is a different story - the mini is woefully under supplied. People LOVE the iPad mini, but demand is far exceeding supply and apple is going miss a ton of Xmas sales. The full size iPad, despite its better specs, is no substitute for the much reduced weight, size & portability of the mini. Here in my average sized city, all retailers are sold out of the mini and are next expecting deliveries on Dec 28th. Outside the USA, the standard ship time is still 2 weeks.

AAPL at the lows of the day, adding to this very depressing day.

Uggggg!
My account is down 10% today, but I still have buying power, so I went for it, with some very conservative to fairly conservative BCS's.
Oct 480-520 for 19.2 Jan '14 450-475 for 13.5 Jan '14 480-580 for 40
As long as Apple keeps selling products, giving earnings that match the TTM or up to 10% off analysts estimates for next year (thus around 50, vs consensus estimates around $56 currently) they should all do well.
Not aiming for the stands, but they should help pay the bills even if my slightly more bullish spreads already on the table don't work out.

I can't decide if this is a once or twice a decade opportunity to pick up more stock in a great company at a an absurd discount, or a chance to stick out my hand and catch another falling knife...

I don't think we will see any sustainable rally until after Jan 1st. I'm my opinion the last trading day of 2012 will see some serious blood.

40 minutes left to see whether weekly options give us a lift. Right now it's not looking hopeful.

We got some sort of recovery, but given that there was 130k worth of weekly calls bought across 510 and 515, it's hardly surprising AAPL got humped.

I calculate that there are five to ten million shares being sold every day for tax purposes. This on top of normal buying and selling. I believe most of those selling for taxes are planning to repurchase their shares, but not until the bottom is in. And this selling pressure will continue until 12/31. January 1st should be launch day, though.

Although both my children are now in their early 20s, I have images of them at the age of these innocent babies who were mercilessly taken from us today. As a parent, I find it completely incomprehensible how one goes on living after something like this....I am so speechless right now...can't even turn away from the television. The news gets worse and worse as the day goes on. it is just so depressing. Please keep those families in your prayers...squeeze your kids a little tighter tonight...count your blessings. This is just awful....awful.

Ted, they could control the number of people they let in the store at one time. Turning everyone away last year was a pr mistake. The energy created by the long lines is priceless. NO lines this year, that can not be undone. Lstream, of those you mentioned, not one of them was Apple restricting sales. Hell, a Chinese woman was tased yesterday when trying to buy iphones to send to China. The Apple store manager told her to leave, when she didn't, they called the police, the police tased her while face down on the ground. Yes I am angry, but I do not think defending Apple continuously when they make mistakes is the right thing either. Lines don't matter unless you're someone waiting in one, in which case you hate them. What am I missing here? In the not-too-distant future the only retail lines will be virtual in nature while we shop almost entirely from our couches.

Wait on actual iPhone numbers for fiscal Q1 13 before you can complete the narrative. Apple can't get away with the channel stuffing others try.

I wounder if all this heavy discounting has to do with just getting people in the store. The Walmart near me has nothing in stock. hmmmm. They advertise the hottest products at a deep discount to get people into the store, knowing that they don't have any stock because Apple is selling all they can make. Might as well have free iPhone's (while supplies last).

I assume no real physical harm to yourself in the car accident JD - hope the car's not too badly dinged up.

BTW, I am fine (and more importantly, the Vette is fine), as my Jeep is indestructible. Unfortunately, my friends and family will be getting lumps of coal in their stockings this Christmas, since I will be paying the woman with the destructible Honda out of pocket. Not whining, as today gives us perspective on real problems, but some good news, any news, would be really nice this week.
