Can someone answer a question? If you buy shares during after hours and the company goes ex dividend the next morning, are you eligible for the dividend? Thanks. I think it depends on what your settlement date is. Will your settlement date for your AH transaction be on the same date if that transaction was done during market hours? Just Googled my question and apparently you do qualify for the dividend if you buy in after-hours.

A little bit of good news from Georgia. I did not even know it was coming, but Georgia has passed a law for Internet retailers to start collecting taxes.
Die Amazon, die.

They should make it retroactive. July 1995 sounds good.
Not paying taxes on Amazon is nice. But it has always been entirely illogical.

Off topic for a bit: Tips for detecting scammers on craigslist.
1. The most popular email provider far and away is Gmail. I got more scam messages from Gmail addy's than 10x off all the other scammers providers combined.
2. So, when selling an expensive item on Craiglist, put 1, 2 or 3 pricey extra items for sale. You'll get 2,3,4 messages all from the same person but different email addy's. Names such as "Grant Edwards" and "Lord Jacksonville" are popular now.
3. I'm selling some handpainted china. So what does the scammer do ? Asks if the "item" is still for sale. Never mind there are 14 pieces, not just a single item.
Good going, Georgia. AMZN is way too big to slip by. Once upon a time, e-commerce was as delicate as ...... mmmm...... can't say. Anyway, that time is past.

Sleepy trading. It's the holidays. AMZN = kinda whoa (would've been a great trade, I wasn't involved), but nothing else too exciting that was on my radar (which is limited range).

Nikkei is on a huge climb. Itching for 10,400. HangSeng lifting at 22,700. Nasdaq is +3.5, feels like a dead cat bounce.

Chas, this has been one of my pet peeves for a long time. 10 states have the law now. Amazon bullied California to back down, but once the tide shifts, Amazon will be in trouble. Internet sales have ruined a lot of companies. BBY may be next.

Maybe we can get some of that money being used to prop up AMZN flowing back this way.

Tetra, e-commerce was an idea that, like many other theory's, that has unintended consequences. People have become "out for themselves". They go into BBY, try out the displays, then go home and buy online. I have bought plenty of things online, but it is usually because of price, not just to save $6 in tax. Example, I bought a battery for my nail gun last week from Amazon, $44, price at Lowes, $80+. There is no reason for such a discrepancy. Tammy bought a new dining room set 2 months ago and saved $1000 ($100 of it was in tax)
Taxation is simple, politics makes it illogical.

Buying local brings about 3X back to the local economy, not sure what that number is when comparing Big Box vs. Amazon. Have been making a concerted effort to support the little guys.

Chas, my old company had studies done that showed the economic impact for each job. The union participated along with the city, the results were amazing. For each hourly job, 3 other jobs were needed in support. Those were just the retail and infrastructure jobs. When you factored in the tax base by those employees the city budget was actually in debt to the company. (School,fire,police,etc...). The Internet undermines city, county and state budgets. The state of Georgia estimates the tax loss each year at 195 million. Considering the Georgia budget, that is a big number.

Don't throw me and other shoppers under the bus for saving money on Amazon in the past, though.
(I did buy my iMac direct from Apple though, tax and all.)
