I can't read the FT article, but they seem to think Apple will launch a cut-rate iPhoneI'd always like to see Apple having more diversity on product price even if it requires a diversity on features. Give people a choice, and then make the upsell very tempting. The upsell shouldn't all be about screen size. I know at least some people ready to trim down their smartphone footprint a bit, so it can fit in pockets and is less likely to break on a fall.

Apple could have a huge advantage here. Not only would they have the "and" market, being headphones and a hearing aid, but they'd also have the advantage that by being an "and", they could be outside of the ear, where one would imagine they could work better. My take on hearing aids is that in addition to getting better at hearing, the main push has been to get smaller. The smaller they are, the less noticeable. But Apple, if going with "and", could stay big. My father-in-law has asked for years about Apple making one. For him, it was growing up around tractors, and even with good hearing aids he has trouble hearing certain frequencies, which happens to coincide with women's and girl's voices. There's also the big problem of amplifying everything, instead of just what he wants to hear. Restaurants and such are bad. OTOH, my neighbor has the high end ones that are app controlled. He finally bought an iPhone just to control them, though it's never been on the internet. It's a tax thing, as a former CPA. But while he also tries to stay away from noisy places, and gets bugged when I'm talking to him and he starts hearing the noise or yelling across the street, he seems to do fine at different frequencies. His might be from airplanes as growing up his dad owned an airport in SoCal. At the same time, a "hearpod" doesn't have to be just for those that need it all the time. A boost, especially directionally, could be helpful at a variety of times. And then there's all those people that maybe don't fully need a pair, but their hearing has faded some and it could help a bit. Off to go tile. The ear muffs help a bit.

seems pretty relevant... good time to raise debt at cheap rates... apple serving fiduciary duty and allocating capital efficiently

seems pretty relevant... good time to raise debt at cheap rates... apple serving fiduciary duty and allocating capital efficiently So Apple is borrowing 7 billion at 2.95% in order to pay off 7 billion it borrowed in 2015 at 3.45%. I don't get it. Why would anyone borrow money when they have 200 billion in cash earning almost nothing. They will be paying about $210 million per year to carry that 7 billion. Anybody have any idea why this is a good thing?

google 'capital structure' and look at links and images... some interesting diagrams pop up...
a lot of it is over my head to be honest, but generally i get the sense this is to: ...accelerate stock buybacks ...reach stated goal of becoming cash-neutral
also found these two links for additional color:

...i think aapl would be at ATH's *today* if not for trade war... this leaves additional risk (of course) but also opportunity (should a deal be reached) well this is freaking weird... trump agrees with me! “Let me tell you, if I wanted to do nothing with China, our stock market, our stock market would be 10,000 points higher than it is right now but somebody had to do this,” the president told reporters at the White House on Wednesday. “It was out of control and they were out of control.” considering djia is sitting at 26660, trump is effectively saying stock market (at least the dow components in aggregate) would be 37.5% higher right now... that would put aapl at $288, not bad! of course he's full of s*it exaggerates sometimes - but the basic point stands that markets have been depressed by the trade war... actually, it's a bit of a relief, maybe there's some hope there's one or two adults left in the room (peter navarro does not count) also, futures are bright green because they finally set a date for talks (in october?? wtf is the point of waiting an extra month)

Trump knows he’ll be broomed without a healthy stock market and what that requires, a trade deal. So, he’s under pressure to make progress with China even it ends up like lipstick on a pig. That’s the only reason I’ve stayed in the market. Where I get off this broken wagon train is the question. Probably next week.

I got a chuckle from Republican Rick Wilson, who misspelled President Birdbrain in this tweet: I really don't keep up with how other economies around the world are doing, but a couple weeks ago with that NPR show on how one would lower the dollar, they said one reason that was hard to do right now was because the US economy was doing so much better than everyone else (some weren't doing well), and so other countries would put money into the dollar and keep it strong. If true that other economies aren't doing so hot, wouldn't that directly affect any trade imbalances. Let's say the US buys 20% of their stuff overseas, and on a good economy that percentage might stick (or even grow), but it would be with a larger total spending. OTOH, another place, like the EU, might also keep their same historic percentage (or maybe it would drop), but with spending less money, the total spending would be less. I think I'd rather see the trade imbalance increase if a main underlying cause is having the US economy doing pretty good, while many other places aren't doing as well. That sounds a lot better than the opposite.
