It's earnings day! And AAPL is up a little! Green!!!
Lots of speculation, but no actual news yet. Read though Mav's prediction and others, for entertainment purposes only (as he says). Let's see what comes out in 7 hours.
In the mean time, what do you want to see here? What would get you excited to come here in the morning? By being so focused on Apple and AAPL, we miss out on some of the sense of community you get when sharing other things. There's the Dungeon, and sometimes some humor in the Peanut Gallery. Would people be interested in a "sharing thoughts" section, a place where one could share their reactions to getting a Roomba, a new wireless charger (ok, on topic for the iPhone), or reminding folks to spend the time to set up and update beneficiaries?
In trying to spare the board of political outbursts, is it too plain? Or is this just the cycle of a board, with a quiet time when there's not too much to talk about?
And with that, the stock is now down a little, and both chinacat and dreamRaj jumped in and started the daily thread.
EDIT: Or do you just want to see that sort of stuff in the daily thread? We always did that on TMF, including at least one tidbit of AAPL goodness to keep it on-topic, but adding other info as we saw fit. I personally like that, just like having a conversation in real life. It brings in color, side tangents, and ideas. Just like real life, you likely tailor your topics a little, likely saving the hot button items for the Dungeon. But it's the intertwining thoughts that help keep things interesting and intriguing.

Much as I love AFB, I've never wanted to visit other threads of our board except the Intraday and Weekend Updates. Of late, conversations have been very civil and friendly. So let's continue that and share our stuff right here.

Not much going on today, here or in the market. The Fed in 20 minutes (when writing 40 minutes ago), and earnings in just under 3 hours.
We bought 2 new electronic devices lately, one with some planning, and one as a surprise. Last xmas a relative wanted a charging pad for the secret santa gift, so I looked into them a bit then and bought one. Since then I've been thinking about them a bit, especially as my old iPhone 5S had some charging problems, mainly just needing the port cleaned out. Apparently I get a lot of dirt and junk in my pockets, which gucks it up. On our trip we stopped into an Apple authorized store, and I tried both of our iPhones on a charging pad, mine with a slim case and hers with a thick one. Both worked, so once back I looked some more and found a sub-$10 one on Amazon. I wouldn't say it is life changing, but it is one less thing to worry about, especially at the end of the night where you might not want to flip on more lights just to align the plug. The one I bought has fast-charging capability, if I get a higher watt AC adapter in the future. Until then, it just uses one of our white Apple AC blocks.
The second was a thrift store find when dropping off a few bags of clothes. There was a Roomba 650, nearly new, still with a touch of xmas paper taped to the box. It turns out they are a hefty $500 new, but $200 for a refurb. I got it for quite a bit less, with the agreement that I couldn't bring it back even if the battery was shot. Deal!
We've never had one, and while a couple friends and relatives have them, I had never seen one in action. After charging for a bit, we fired it up, where the kids begged to be the one to start it. With Huck Finn in mind, we've managed to have them take turns, but first sweep up food a bit and look around for things to pick up. After half a week, sometimes with double-day cleaning, things are looking pretty good.
It's randomness bugs me and yet is part of the intrigue, getting people to watch it to see when it will finally pick up that little paper scrap. But running for an hour before self-docking, and even about 2 hours when it couldn't find the dock, it does pretty well cleaning up an area maybe 900 sqft. It's short enough to get that dust under a cabinet, and has eventually managed to get itself out of most situations, though I just had to move it out from being stuck under a cabinet that has trim work that dips in the middle, creating a pinch point. It senses and doesn't fall down the stairs, there's an IR wall the keeps it from the wood stove, and it generally just does its thing.
There are downsides. It does make some noise and is a little distracting, but only because we are normally around and are running it while here for now instead of setting it on a schedule. It sometimes really rams into things, pushing kitchen chairs just a little. It slows down or even avoids some things, like walls. But when stuck in the pinball death of a set of 8 chairs at the table, it sometimes accelerates like it is annoyed. It can get stuck. It ran into my wife's bare feet. And it likes to grab cords, trying to get the MacBook's power cord. Yesterday it grabbed it's docking station cord and moved it, so that the docking station was facing the wall. That caused it to run for an hour and a half before we saw the problem, and a total of about 2 hours. Normally, including just now, it goes back to it's dock after an hour.
The dirt bin is pretty small, so you are supposed to empty it daily. There is a special dock with a trash can, but that's $1k just for the special dock.
So why is this at all related to Apple? Well, they are selling a higher end item that they don't expect everyone to be interested in. The profit margin must be huge, not including the R&D. But then there's the personification, and the fact that many go so far as naming their Roomba, possibly even considering it part of the family or a pet.
There are cheaper brands out there, and Amazon shows good ratings on some of them. But if getting this luxury item, a lot of people will just go for the tried and true well known brand. Like a Kitchen Aid stand mixer (roots with Hobart), or a Cuisinart food processor. There is competition, and some might be just as good or even better. But the quick pick is the well known one.
Apple's situation is a little different, partly because it doesn't have as much of the personification side of things. Siri gets it closer. OTOH, something like the iPhone is an affordable luxury item that gets used so much that one often can't imagine life without it, or before it. But being the high end item, within grasp but with a little higher build cost, R&D, and profit margin, gives Apple a nice place to be where they can afford to make the end unit a little better, while maintaining their "gold standard" status.

We got a Roomba a couple of Xmas ago from older son and his family. It’s definitely not for the anal types among us, but it does a good job on relatively open spaces. It did not eliminate the need for a traditional vacuum cleaner for us, but it certainly has reduced the usage to making sure that the nooks and crannies on the public spaces in the house are ready for company. These earnings announcement days do seem to drag on. Looks like some of the pros may be hedging their bets in the mean time. Yahoo has The best features of Apple's AirPods Pro. One feature that seemed to me would be quite useful is Transparency Mode, which allows external sound to be audible while engaged, instead of having to remove one earbud.

Roomba is a terrible product, unless you want black marks all along your trim pieces. In navigating the perimeter of every room, its bumpers touch your trim, leaving marks that will require a repaint. They'll send you white strips to minimize, but the damage has been done to my trim.

It sure is! But it's also the thrill of getting something to do your work for you. I remember the thrill of writing a simple program to do a simple math function. Likewise, reading "The boy who harnessed the wind", he was excited about the wind turning the windmill he created, and then giving light! It changed his, and his town's, life. A Roomba's shortcomings, especially any possible marks left on the walls, is a first world problem. But the excitement of having something that helps you out, sometimes in a more dramatic way than others, is more universal.

AIRPODS PRO are the bomb.
Just picked up a set at the Apple Store and I’m blown away. Best things I’ve ever heard.
The original Airpods were/are still great. (And there’s still room for them to live in a pocket)
The Pros are not an incremental improvement. Massive.
The noise cancellation takes away everything but the music. (At least in a not-too-noisy work environment) Will try in the real world later. The bass is tremendous. Clarity is amazing. Everything disappears now except for the smallest nuances of the music.

Wanted a Roomba but with three young kids (two of them being always-hyper twin boys, now 5), I knew it would get jumped on!
Speaking of charging pads, I have Qi wireless charging pads in every room. Haven't plugged in my iPhone with a cable in a long time except when using power banks.

We live in the first world and I definitely agree with Mercel. Have finished half the house here and had 10 inch planks milled out of poplar for the wall. Sand, tack, primer, sand, vac, tack first coat oil, sand, vac, tack, second coat white oil paint. That thing messes with these walls and it's www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9wsjroVlu8. .

I’m sure many AAPL shareholders today are wondering whether the AAPL share price will climb or fall after earnings but I have to say, I’m not particularly worried either way. Probably as much as anyone on AFB, I love to see AAPL burst through a previous ATH, but I do have reservations about hitting an ATH so close to dividends. Since being older than dirt means I have to sell enough shares every year to satisfy the RMD for my IRA’s, I love high share prices because it means I can meet the RMD requirements by selling fewer shares. OTOH, when dividends are paid 4 times a year, I love a *lower* share price because it means the AAPL dividends that are paid to my wife’s IRA’s and my IRA’s buy more shares when they’re reinvested than they would at a higher share price. I know, I know…1st world problem. In any case, although I’ve never previously put it into a spreadsheet, an imaginary chart like the one I’ve included below, is *always* in my thinking when it comes to monitoring the AAPL share price near dividend time. The number at the intersection of the share price and dividend $ shows the number of possible reinvested shares. I'm guessing I'm not the only one on AFB who feels this way. Cheers to the AAPL Longs!

I gave my wife a Roomba several years ago for Christmas, they were still fairly new to the market back then, so I was curious about how well they worked. Knowing my wife, I figured that they didn't stand a chance if she could not control it. I am not complaining, it is just the way that she is. To get ahead of this, I "explained" that it ran on Voice commands and that you had to tell it when to turn. This seemed acceptable and she was willing to try it. The Roomba took off, blissfully ignoring everything she said, but occasionally, out of sheer luck, obeying her. I may have mentioned that the voice control took a little while to learn her voice. If I had been able to keep a straight face, I think she might still be using it. I am not sure what happened to it. I always thought it found it's way into a closet somehere and the batteries ran down. Who knows, maybe it fled to the thrift store.

Nice to hear that I'm torn between the Airpods Pro and Powerbeats Pro. I would've loved to go with the Airpods Pro but I'm one of those people in whose ears the earphones don't stay put. The Powebeats Pro have a hook that keeps them securely in place. Might just have to try them both at an Apple store and decide.

These just stay in for me rock solid (I like the original AirPods)

Tick tock tick tock. Still a couple minutes FWIW, I believe our 650 does not run into the walls. It gets close, but doesn't hit them. Most of our walls have oak that's stained. But in the couple places that have white painted soft pine that I put in, and a few white drywall areas, I don't see marks. It's more the small things, like the chair legs, that it plays pinball with. EDIT: the 650 still does do an initial touch of the wall, but at low speed, and then moves next to the wall instead of dragging on the wall. Hopefully newer ones do better than this, but it looks like this one started in 2015 And that, like a recent iPhone vs a cheap smartphone (there are ones down in the $100 range!), are the things that you don't really appreciate until you've seen them in practice, and seen the incremental improvements over the years.
