The story about Alibaba Singles Day reminded me that Tim Cook does not get enough credit for this Fall’s success. With everyone looking ahead to the 5G milestone, most pundits were predicting a fairly soft release year this time. The factors that have driven the success had to be planned and started likely at least a couple of years ago. However...
I am expecting the cycle to repeat itself, with critics bemoaning how far Apple has fallen behind now that some competitors have begun rolling out their 5G products. Investors should remember the platitude “All good things in all good time”.

Do You Own Millennials' New Favorite Stock?"Millennial investors favor a certain type of stock for sure. But their most favorite stock of all is now an S&P 500 tech darling: Apple (AAPL). Apple: Millennials' Top S&P 500 Holding It's easy to see why millennials' portfolios shifted to Apple in the third quarter. Shares of the iPhone maker are up 32.5% since the beginning of the third quarter. On Oct. 30, Apple reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $3.03 a share. That topped earnings expectations by nearly 7%. Analysts are getting even more bullish on Apple. The company is expected to earn $13.05 a share in fiscal 2020. If right, that would be nearly 10% growth. That sure beats the company's 0.2% profit contraction in fiscal 2019."

Investors should remember the platitude “All good things in all good time”. Yep, falling behind, supplier orders canceled, and then even once the new features are integrated nicely, it's "no innovation". The wall of worry is always there, waiting for a new article to be pasted up over the old one that said the same thing. But the dates and ads have been updated, and it gets the eyeballs.

Having done some iOS programming (just to learn how, but I haven't actually released anything), I don't believe this is truly a bug. Once an app asks permission to use your camera or microphone, it can continue to do so even if for other than the stated purpose. I recommend you always go to the Settings app and turn off access to these tools after you are done using them. You need to do this either in the Privacy section or for each individual app. If you gave Facebook, or any other app, permission to use your camera or microphone, for whatever reason, and don't subsequently turn off access you leave yourself open to such nefarious uses. Personally, I'd love to see FB kicked out of the App Store. I would like to see Apple update their permission process to include a "one time only" response. Also, I think the camera permission should be separated into two, one for front and one for rear cameras.

I encourage all millennials to aggressively follow the lead of their brethren. You wouldn’t want to be left out and uncool, now would you?

We have watched The Morning Show and See. The production values of both are as good as anything available. The acting on The Morning Show is what you would expect from the caliber of cast and the writing is courageous in dealing with #MeToo and its implications. I was disappointed with the technical aspects, however. We tried to watch on an older AppleTV. We often watch with closed captions on even when the dialogue is in English. The CC was often out of sync with the video. It seemed like the software would try to correct this by repeating the video so it was like a glitch in the matrix, repeating scenes to get in sync. OF course, we have to use Comcast here, so who knows what they were doing to the signal. I may try watching on the computer to see if it happens there. None of the videos were available on Roku with the Apple TV app. ( Not Apples fault, I suppose). All in all, it left me worried about Apple. I expect things to just work. If I wanted to be troubleshooting, I would go to MicroSoft.

Just a reminder that there are really no 5G towers up yet, so anyone who advertises "fast 5G speeds!" for their phones should be hit with FTC and state unfair competition/false advertising claims. Early adopter is one thing. But pre-adopter is another.

100 million people could power Apple's stock to new records: "And there is further good news for Apple investors that have already witnessed a 68% stock price surge in 2019. The profit stream from Ives’ estimated 100 million Apple TV+ subscribers — which comes to about $500 million provided Apple doesn’t lift prices —suggests that the current stock price may not be reflective of Apple’s streaming success. “You have a massive installed base [of iPhones]. The content is lacking here, but organically they are stepping up to spend $6 billion a year [on content]. In my opinion if Apple is successful, it adds $15 to the share price,” Ives contends." On the surface stories like this are all great, but too many of these feel-good stories all at one time can start to make me nervous, or should I say cautious.

50% of Americans own stock, most small amounts. What % of young kids do? Any kid coming out of college and starting a job with a 401k should. Sure, they might end up 50% in the S&P and 50% in bonds or some such junk, but it is something. OTOH, in the group I graduated with in '98, the online stock accounts were kicking into high gear, and the mania was growing. Just about everyone was opening an account and "investing". Some put it all in JDSU, and doubled it up with margin! While I made some mistakes too, that bullish timeframe was very forgiving, and I bought my first shares of AAPL at 0.59 or so (maybe 16 5/8, adjusted). While things might not be head over heals right now, I could see the long stretch of a good economy and mostly positive stock returns, plus the zeroing of trading costs and high employment, to get lots of people just out of school to invest. At least a little. And even with the 11-12 month "dead money year" we just had. It's not the bubbly period of various 10x return stocks roping you in. OTOH, if you don't buy a house, and fewer are buying cars, there's only so much you can spend on iPhones, subscriptions, craft beer, and legal weed. Invest Invest Invest!

How about a wheeee! AAPL fought hard today, cheers to the long! By the way, Disney+ movie selection is impressive so far and it's well worth the money. In the long run, I think Apple should have a chance to beat out Disney+, but for now, Disney+ is definitely better.

Among members who have subscribed to 🍎 TV+, I am interested in who has a cable subscription and who does not. At $5 per month, or free for a year with certain purchases, I expect that cable subscribers may be currently willing to give it a try. It will be interesting to see how much individual subscriptions can replace all-in-one subscriptions over time. I suspect sports fans may find it difficult to switch entirely unless the various leagues/tours also get into the business.

In the long run, I think Apple should have a chance to beat out Disney+, but for now, Disney+ is definitely better. There is no question that Apple faces an uphill battle against competitors like Disney who have substantial back catalogs. One solution would be to buy such a company or its catalog, but as has been pointed out re: Netflix such companies who could be targets do not necessarily offer appealing financial profiles. We’ll see what Tim comes up with.
