Another EU shakedown of US companies for $$. While I might trade short term GOOG options, I have a rule not to invest in a company whose products or services nobody likes. I mean Google is kind of the opposite of Apple in that respect. It's only a matter of time before (US) regulators fire an existential torpedo at Google's business model, no?

BTW, JD, I just noticed the update of the Rothschild quote in your avatar; made me smile.

I have been watching the development of the folding devices from Samsung and Microsoft with interest. Since the beginning of e-books, I have longed for a device that let me read with the same form factor as a normal book. There is something deeply satisfying about having two side-by-side pages. I am not sure why it is important, but I know that it is. In addition, turning the device on its side and using one page as a keyboard seems like a better idea than having the keboard pop up from the bottom and obscure part of the viewing area. The Microsoft Neo seems to have figured out these advantages. I think it could pose a threat to iPads going forward. Fortunately, Microsoft and Samsung suck at software. It's not that they don't have talented engineers. It is that the SW engineers are saddled with decades of legacy software that was poorly designed and implemented by poor development processes. I do not believe that there is anyone in the company that understands the entire system.
Despite having tied their own shoelaces together, I think the new form factor might give them an opportunity to make inroads into a major Apple market. I hope the men and women in Cupertino are watching this and will "fast-follow".

This is a quote from the link Chinacat provided: And this link was from inside that story: Avast antivirus harvested user data, then sold to Google, MicrosoftI like the idea of a law that declares that each individual owns any/all data that may be collected. And any revenue made by the sale of the data would belong the that individual. Or something to that effect. This is becoming the dark underbelly of the digital age.

I am not sure why it is important, but I know that it is. Well, I guess that it’s a matter of personal preference, because I am perfectly happy reading on my iPad. I am also not yet convinced that the technical challenges will allow the development of devices that are not compromised in some way. So far, the devices produced have had serious deficiencies, but I’m sure that we all believe that if any company can solve those challenges, Apple will be the one.

ZDNet opines It’s all about the ports: What Apple needs to change now that Jony Ive is gone. I have mixed feelings - I do agree that some of the media mentioned is/was convenient, but simplicity, even at the expense of some perhaps less important functions has always been an Apple design hallmark. I am sure that many here can list at least one old favorite that they would want back, but agreement as to which ones really matter would be elusive.
