It trades like a penny stock in the 1980s....don't even know what to make of it...so irrational.

Well, when you have one of the best analytical minds out there in Horace, essentially saying that this quarter is the toughest to forecast, then to me that says uncertainty. If Horace feels this way, then you can bet that lots of others do too. So what does this mean? Many buyers will sit on their hands and wait until post earnings to decide what to do. So any degree of selling pressure meets with very little buying enthusiasm. All the way till earnings.
Just a guess. More noise as Gregg suggests.

This is akin to having to keep going back to the dentist because they never get the root canal done properly. To add to the pain: Amazon up $5 in PM (2%) with a 3.5K PE. Actually I am going to monitor progress on a theory that money flows between AMZN, GOOG and AAPL. Both GOOG and AMZN are very high in TA and I am looking for signs of the tide turning on those two.

Interesting ;-) AMZN Put Volume: 28,872 contracts Call Volume: 29,302 contracts Put/Call Ratio: 0.99
GOOG Put Volume: 62,561 contracts Call Volume: 86,368 contracts Put/Call Ratio: 0.72
AAPL Put Volume: 400,378 contracts Call Volume: 567,889 contracts Put/Call Ratio: 0.71
Read into that what you will. First time I've looked at all three.

I got an iPad Mini for Christmas and basically haven't turned on my non-Apple PC since xmas. For awhile I didn't think I really would need at tablet when you have a smartphone and computer, but I was wrong. I love the iPad Mini!! Sadly my love for the product has no impact on AAPL continuing to trend down and most likely hitting new lows.

I am a simple guy. Fundamentally AAPL is undervalued. I think we all agree on that. Therefore, I will remain long and have cash for another buy in case AAPL dips back close to $500 again. I have shares, Jan 2014 $600's, Jan 2015 $800's and a small bit of April $650's that may end up expiring worthless

"AppleĀ® today announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion apps*, with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. The App Store℠ has over 500 million active accounts and had a record-breaking December with over two billion downloads during the month." Doesn't sound like there was a huge increase in app downloads over the holidays if 20 billion downloaded for the year and only 2 billion (10%) in December. Am I missing something?

I'd look at incremental increase in devices and average number of apps per customer. Initial post-purchase app downloads may be low but these devices have a looonnnnggg useful life. I just upgraded my 2005 iPod mini for use as an audiobook and podcast player. Bigger battery, 16gb flash memory. New stuff plays just fine.

Isn't Apple a major part of the competition that HTC is suffering from?

Isn't Apple part of the competition that HTC is suffering from? I agree....the article is suggesting that AAPL and Samsung are taking business away from HTC. I guess you are thinking that if HTC has competition then so does AAPL? But I'm not reading it that way necessarily.

Benedict Evans, an analyst who appeared on an asymco podcast last year, tweeted the following observation on the latest data: "iOS App store remains pretty stable at about 5 downloads and $1 spent per month per live device"

I've never seen AAPL so concerned w/ stock price before, given last 2 press releases (first china weekend sales, today app store sales) were totally unnecessary. Maybe TC is trying to tell the shareholders that a great earnings is coming. I know I'm grasping at straws but it makes me feel better .

The China number release was unique. Maybe it is a signal that China is coming into play big time. What we need is a news release that there is a China Mobile deal.

Understand the Marketing dept is always coming up with potential press releases then it is sent to CFOs, legal etc... for approval. IMHO the releases aren't some specific strategy, just positive/successful news that differentiates from competition (I.e. claim what they can't).

Wait so according to the press release, 40billion have been download with half that in 2012. Meaning nearly another 20billion has been downloaded in just the first week of January 2013 alone??? Am I reading that right? Omg that is insane if true.

I guess you are thinking that if HTC has competition then so does AAPL? But I'm not reading it that way necessarily. That is what most 'investors' are thinking, that since HTC is suffering from competition, so will Apple. Apple is coming under a lot of competition, which has clipped some of the exuberance behind the stock. I think it will survive the competition, but it is not taken for granted.
