Lets hope I bring some good luck to the group/AAPL today... Long-time forum lurker starting back at AFBs original home, and proud AAPL investor/trader since January 2010 ($201ish entry if I recall correctly).
Yes, the intensity of the latest correction stings a little, especially my option holdings.
Good luck to you and thanks for managing this operation!

Yeah - wtf happened? I mean, I like it, but what just happened?
Just found out - it is a reaction to this: T said it sold 10 million smartphones in 4Q.

Warning: weak but and once upon a time leading indicator Dow member Alcoa is on deck and likely to be useless.
Warning: over in Braeburn, one member cautioned Tim Cook's visit to China is overrated in the very short run (cough: do not think of China Mobile announcement too soon).

ATT reported record smart phone sales last quarter. "AT&T Inc. announced today that it sold more than 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012, topping its previous record quarter of 9.4 million, set in the fourth quarter of 2011. This included best-ever quarterly sales of Android and Apple smartphones." And this is from AT&T's quarterly report from last year: "In the fourth quarter, the company set a new record with 9.4 million smartphones sold, nearly double the number sold in the third quarter and 50 percent more than the previous quarterly record. Fourth-quarter smartphone sales represented more than 80 percent of postpaid device sales. Both iPhone and Android device sales set records. During the quarter, more than 7.6 million iPhones were activated, the majority of which were iPhone 4S, which went on sale Oct. 14." So am I right to assume that AT&T sold more than 7.6 million iPhones this Dec quarter?

For football fans on this board, I read RG III may need surgery and could be out 14-18months. That is horrible for Redskins. In other news AAPL actually green.

Assuming that AT&T sold 8 million iPhones, Apple might have sold the following total number of iPhones in Fiscal Q1 2013:
AT&T represents 20.5% of all sales (max. in the last few quarters): 39 million iPhones
AT&T represents 12.3% of all sales (min. in the last few quarters): 65 million iPhones
Alternative scenarios (AT&T share = total sales): 13% = 61.5 mil. 14% = 57.1 mil. 15% = 53.3 mil. 16% = 50.0 mil. 17% = 47.1 mil. 18% = 44.4 mil. 19% = 42.1 mil.

The coaches saying 'well he told me he wanted to play and could' is a horrendous excuse. Any NFL player is going to say that, especially a rookie who's leading his team to their first playoff game in a while. beyond dumb. back on topic- looking like a good opening. i don't expect much more down but of course you never know with this lil guy.

that dummy melissa lee just said that apple sold 45million iphone 5's, based on that samsung independent release... a) if she was actually right, that would be incredible because she said just iphone 5's lol. she'd hate herself for actually saying something good about aapl. b) funny how they can report that independent news release as a factual news point. secondly, here's the chart i put together of the recent quarters iphone sales broken down by VZ, AT&T and Sprint.

ok so, taking the data 1 step farther:
Q4 2011, AT&T sold 9.4million smartphones, 7.6million iphones (80.8%) Q1 2012, AT&T sold 5.5million smartphones, 4.3million iphones (78.2%) Q2 2012, AT&T sold 5.1million smartphones, 3.7million iphones (72.5%) Q3 2012, AT&T sold 6.1million smartphones, 4.7million iphones (77.0%)
so yea 8 million seems like a safe bet if they sold more than 10 million smartphones. I guess the big question is how much more than 10 million...

So am I right to assume that AT&T sold more than 7.6 million iPhones this Dec quarter? I don't think you can assume that AT&T sold more than 7.6 million iPhones this Dec quarter. The press release combines iPhone and android numbers and we don't know the breakdown between the two. Is anyone concerned that they mention "iPhone and Android device sales" in the release from a year ago, but "Android and Apple smartphones" in this year's release. Could there be any significance to the order with the best-selling (or fastest growing) first? (Alternate interpretation: I have been reduced to a paranoid crazy person these last few months and need to take a deep breath...)

Renee, I don't think you need to worry. There were no real flagship android phones out this last quarter (Galaxy S3 and Note sold 23 million TOTAL, not just AT&T). It was all iPhone 5, and cheap iPhone 4/4S. Combine that with the sales surveys we've seen recently that show a huge increase in iPhone vs. Android and I think at a bare minimum we should see the same historical mix from AT&T.

Tuffet is likely correct that Androids vs iPhone is not a concern.
I would have like to have seen greater growth overall.

Correct. The growth is no longer there in the US as most people now already have smartphones. It is an expected result. We need to see international growth now. We know China will be big this quarter, but is it enough to give us a huge iPhone number? Tough to say. International revenue share will have to be at an all time high. With the launch in China and the fastest ever rollout, it is certainly on the table.
