At some point there will be an update that will add the functionality people need or want. I think "disaster" is over stating. This has been a relatively smooth rollout of both the iPhone 5 and iOS 6; Two MAJOR accomplishments. People's expectations are too high and you're forgetting the enormity of what has happened in the last couple of weeks. Some hiccups are inevitable. It's all fixable. That's what updates are for. It's a disaster for the affected customer - who rightly doesn't care how many Bothans died to bring them this great piece of technology, they just want it to be an improvement over the last one. It's possible to use Google Maps in the browser, or to splash out on a GPS app with a better map (they tend to be expensive, I've noticed), but neither are great solutions. This is just going to keep giving bad PR on a daily basis, and as I said it seems like it's a hard problem to solve for Apple. Expect Android manufacturers to start making comparisons in ads. A "disaster"? In the realm of what's important in the world do you really consider a map app a disaster? If it's that important wait until a more suitable app comes out... or buy another phone. Every launch there is some controversy that soon dies down. One year it was the antennae issue, the year before it was something else. Six months after the release it gets resolved or people forget about it. Apple wants to provide the best customer experience possible. They seem to come through repeatedly. This will all be sorted out. From what I've seen so far, I'm quite happy with the map app.

I find the Maps fully servicable. Like most users, I don't need extremely detailed information....I need logic and visualization.

Go to the World Trade Center site. Apple maps 3D is unbelievable on my iPad3. Takes a bit of learning to control azimuth, but once you've got it, amazing!

For what it is worth, I like the new map app better. The old one made it very difficult to see the road names. When you zoomed in, it changed the font so the name was always hidden by the road. This new app seems to do a much better job of making the names visible. for me this whole maps controversy is a non issue

Paris Apple staff to strike for iPhone 5 launch A strike is set to ahead at three Apple stores in Paris to coincide with the Friday launch of the new iPhone 5. One Apple employee speaking to FRANCE 24 compared his job to “working in a coal mine.” Apple Store workers in Paris are set to go on strike Friday in a dispute over pay and working conditions. The industrial action in the French capital’s three Apple stores is set to coincide with the launch of company's latest offering, the iPhone 5. Workers there complain about the high-pressure working environment and low salaries. “It’s like working in a coal mine,” one part-time worker, who asked not to be named, told FRANCE 24. "Arriving on time is frowned upon" Staff, he said, were monitored by CCTV “all the way to the toilet door”, were searched when leaving work and endured a work culture where “even arriving on time is frowned upon”. “We are expected to arrive well before we are due to start. I put in at least 30 hours in a 25-hour week job contract,” he said, adding that workers were only allowed one break in the middle of their nine-hour shifts - which is almost unheard-of in France. “Meanwhile, we are chronically understaffed and most of us are part-timers, which is astonishing considering the company’s staggering profits," he said. "Apple, frankly, could be doing much more to alleviate the pressure.” Key demands by workers include a “13th month”, in which employees are given a double salary cheque, normally at the end of December, which is common practise in France. Workers are also demanding subsidised meal vouchers - another norm in France - as part of their pay packet. According to the French version of the Huffington Post, “last chance” negotiations between workers and managers at the end of Wednesday came to little. more here www.france24.com/en/20120920-french-apple-store-workers-threaten-strike-iphone-5-launch-paris-employment-huffington-post-?ns_campaign=editorial&ns_source=RSS_public&ns_mchannel=RSS&ns_fee=0&ns_linkname=20120920_french_apple_store_workers_threaten_strike&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeedSo they are demanding a yearly bonus equal to a month's pay for all workers plus get their meals paid for . . . Sounds like France. Nope, it is very common all over Europe to pay a bonus at the end of the year, which equals a 13th month salary in most big companies. Most banks pay an additional 14th month!

But you have to get used on how to search. I live on a private little dead end street that is only about 20 years old, and the new Map app could not find it (Google maps was able to). However, it pops up with a couple of options (abbreviated versions of my street's name), and I was able to see it. I like also the turn by turn directions. I missed that when I used the old maps app.

Apple Maps is more accurate for the satellite view of my home, much more recent. Google's is stale at a couple of years old. Over the years, Google maps data here has varied: better at times, worse at others, every time it was re-imaged. I didn't like the latest (current) Google version much vs the previous Google versions because for some reason, they'd oversharpened all of it and it looked very artificial. I also have no street view of my home, it's a dead end and the GoogleCar apparently didn't bother, even though neighboring streets are covered. The more I use the new Apple maps, the more I like them. The detail map of my house on Google is significantly better than it is on Apple. The comparison isn't even close. Maybe the problem is my vision is 20/20...

Add me to the list that think the Maps are considerably more than adequate. Google never had turn by turn on Apple products so that alone is a huge improvement. We use to use a combination of our stand alone Garmin and Google maps for our road trips and it was great. Check for restaurants and hotels on upcoming exits and it showed you all the available choices. That ended about 3 or 4 years ago and then it appeared that shop keepers had to pay some kind of tithe to be included in the search results. We'd go flying right by a hotel or restaurant that would have been our choice had we known about them. Most would turn around but as my wife likes to point out...,"Bill never goes backwards". The mapping data is written up somewhere but I know Apple is using TomTom and crowdsourcing at the least to update it's mapping info. With millions supplying data you can almost bank on these being the BEST available maps before too long. Just the annual "much ado about nothing" that we've all grown accustomed to. Btw. Here's what TomTom had to say when queried by MDN. "TomTom supplies maps and related content to the majority of handheld players, including RIM, HTC, Samsung, AOL (MapQuest Mobile), Apple and, yes, Google (for the areas where they don’t make their own maps)."

MAPGATE! Tempest, meet teapot. I agree. But you know people will still want to vent. Will this be the proverbial straw that tips some people to leave iOS? Maybe. But I still think there will be more people deserting Android, BlackBerry and Windows phone for iOS. I do not mean to downplay the problem. I think Apple is well aware and probably anticipated these problems. This divorce from Google was necessary, but it's going to hurt at first.

Regarding maps: Is it a deal killer? no, it's not. I'm still going to upgrade my iPhone4 to an iPhone5, and use my iPad, and use my Mac Book Pro, and my Apple TV, and my Mac. But maps are a big user feature. They represent something like 25% of Googs traffic. I use them weekly if not almost daily. Terms being used to describe Apple maps like "Serviceable" and "adequate", are not best in class. Apple's brand is built on Best in Class.

Yeah, and how are those bloated benefits and laziness working out for Europe? Epic fail. The French disgust me. My 13-yr-old niece was in Paris last year. She tried ordering at a restaurant, but the waiter felt it beneath him to take orders from a child, so her aunt had to order for her. In America, he'd have been fired before dessert. But in entitled France, you can't fire anyone. Who would want to start a business in such a place? 10% unemployment, probably like 20-something percent for youths. Oh boo hoo, working in the coal mines! Unbelievable.

There is an unhealthy sense of entitlement in France for the most part. I was there last month. I find it hard to believe that workplace conditions vary that greatly from the US to France. Bitter employees are everywhere, this just happens to be published.

BTW, the map thing is a PR hit, if not "disaster," and it's hard to imagine Jobs allowing this to happen. I can only hope Cook has one of those "you should all hate each other" meetings at One Infinite Loop soon, and that it doesn't impact sales - and share price - too much before an update can be released. It's not exactly an overnight bug fix. Absolutely inexcusable for Apple to release maps not ready for primetime, when everyone knows in advance they won't be cut any slack by the media.

Hey that got posted before I was done...here's an edited post..sorry.
All due respect Mav, and I really do have the utmost respect for you, but the items you list were all cutting edge innovations that were experiments. Maps are not new, nor cutting edge. They're meat and potato internet staples.
I'm not making a federal case out of them. I'll just reluctantly keep using Goog maps until Apples are improved. Which pisses me off because I hate Goog.
My far bigger problem is trying to get the January 2015 BCS's I'm trying to buy for the price I want to pay. Market maker don't want to play....

Jobs allowed MobileMe and Ping to happen. And the Cube and iPod Hi-Fi. Failed products are not analogous to a failed update of Apple's bread-and-butter product. And Jobs sure as hell thought the MobileMe failure was serious. I'd suggest all Pollyanna's go read the $AAPL Twitter feed and tell me that. In fact, iOS Maps is one of the Twitter trends right now. And it ain't good.

RG, been out all day, sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I hope you found the drop down in the profile. Lovey, don't shoot me, but I bought some Oct 720's, compared to what they were selling for yesterday they seem like a bargain today. Also bought some CMG for Jan. CMG has been very good to me lately. Few other positions also, powder getting low. Lovey, I did notice the stock streamer on the bottom of the home page. Problem is, it is on the bottom of the home page. LOL Surely there is a way to put it at the top next to or in that wide PM bar? Pleeeeeease

He answered in French knowing very well I had no idea what he was saying. It was beneath him to speak English. However, I have several very good friends that are French, and they are great people that work hard - so generalizing is not really a good thing. There are lazy and stupid people in every single country on this planet.

I'd love to know what Antennagate was like on Twitter.
Maps is inferior to the Google version in many ways. Apple has to deal with it. Plan accordingly.

LOL The experience that sticks out to me is one in the Atlanta airport. I was looking for my baggage carousel when the absolute most beautiful woman I have ever seen in person, I mean ever, walked up to me and asked for my help. I thought I had won the lottery and was looking for cameras. I ask her where her flight originated and she said Paris in her beautiful accent. For whatever reason she moved closer and was touching me and seemed very appreciative. Then it hit me, the most God awful smell I have ever encountered, BO that could have ended the last 3 wars. I quickly found her luggage and was gone in a flash. Has scared me for life. That was 7-8 years ago, remember it like it was yesterday.

I bought the dip on everybody's recommendation this morning at 694.50. I presumed we would gravitate back toward 700 fairly quickly given quad-witching and all the other smoke and mirrors stuff going on. Maps will be fixed. Despite my earlier pass on the functionality, I've now taken a few minutes to test some of the common things I used to use Google maps for and I think I can say: "there is work to be done here, Apple". But I am sure they know that....

I generally prefer $AAPL stocktwits to $AAPL twitter. stocktwits.com/symbol/AAPL Stocktwits is slightly different from regular twitter. The feeds are not the same.
