Apple's Q2 sales driven by iPhone SE

Smartphone sales volume fell 25% Y/Y in Q2, according to new Counterpoint Research data.
Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone sales fell 23% in the period but volumes grew through the quarter, driven by the low-cost iPhone SE.
Counterpoint says the SE has been "selling above expectations in both postpaid and prepaid channels."
Over a quarter of SE users had switched from an Android device, and 30% upgraded from an iPhone 6s or older.
Earlier today, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners data showed that the SE made up nearly one-fifth of all iPhone purchases in Q1.
The $399 iPhone SE launched in late April, four years after the tech giant's first budget-friendly model.

“Every few years Apple comes out with a new low-priced iPhone, with up-to-date features, to sweep up the customers using the oldest iPhones,” said Mike Levin, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder. “iPhone SE seems to have reached this specific segment of long-time iPhone users. Even though operating system switching has diminished in recent years, even more SE buyers came from within the iOS installed base compared to buyers for other iPhone models.
“And, in the quarter, SE buyers had really old phones, with almost three-quarters having an iPhone that was three years old or more. So, they upgraded from iPhone 5, 6, or 7 models, which meant these users really waited awhile to buy a new phone. These are users who evidently resisted upgrading to newer phones at more attractive price points, such as iPhone 11, last year’s iPhone XR, and even the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which launched in 2017, as its prices declined over the years.”

My take: Color me surprised by the wide stretch of aqua and orange in Chart 1. I wouldn’t have guessed that last fall’s iPhones 11 series (11, 11Pro, 11ProMax) would account for 65% of sales when there were so many cheaper alternatives.
