Oh, we byte.... (that was a binary joke, but only 10 of you will get that) That is quite a pessimistic assessment of forum members. I took it as base 10 joke, to go along with the “byte” and “binary” references.

The dividend yield is now down to .85% and presumably will be lower yet when up for review next spring.
Here's to Tim and Company continuing to spread love to investors after the 4:1 split with a sizable divy increase.

In fairness, my yield on AAPL shares is probably more like 300-400%

Gosh, I can’t imagine why things are so lighthearted around here . It’s going to be hard to wait until September to see the actual impact of the split. Anyone want to guess the closing price on August 30?

Anyone want to guess the closing price on August 30? Color me clueless especially in the macro economic environment of 2020. Anyone have a spare equivalent version of the Back to the Future Sports Almanac but for stocks I can borrow?

We have new member, lymphocyte. Welcome aboard! If you have been observing, then you know that we mostly don’t bite, notwithstanding political and intellectual differences. Please do introduce yourself, tell us a bit about yourself, your interest in Apple/AAPL, and why you decided to join the party. Its kinda funny how I started investing in Apple. I've been using Apple products ever since I got my first Apple IIe way back. Had at least two Macs while in college and graduate school. Sometime in the mid nineties I bought my first PC laptop, and I felt so guilty that I was turning my back on Apple when it was in kind of dire financial shape that I bought a few shares of AAPL as proof of my allegiance. I think I paid 14 bucks per share or so. I half expected the company to go out of business, so clearly this was not a well-calculated rational investment decision. Well, Steve came back, the Mac OSX happened, then the iPod, the iPhone, etc, etc. All those years I watched my initial investment grow and grow and grow. After I got a job I kept adding to my AAPL stash (should've added a lot more in hindsight.) There were a lot of up and downs during those twenty years or so as you all remember, but I never sold a share. At some point I decided that I probably needed to diversify after AAPL grew to about 75% of my portfolio, so I've been selling a bit here and there for the past few years. It's now down somewhere around 40%. I think back in the early 2000s I started educating myself a bit more about investing and found this board back when it was hosted by that Mac magazine website (MacObserver?) Been following ever since and learned a lot about investing, but never felt like I had anything worth contributing. I've got enough to comfortably retire by most peoples' standards at this point, but I've still got young kids and like my job so I figure I'll keep working at least until they start college. Its nice to have F-U money though. We bought a second house to ride out the pandemic, with the cash cushion we have accumulated over the years (most of which came from AAPL.)

Thank you very much for your delightful response. It certainly mirrors my own, as an enthusiastic user/fan, which led to investment once we had our IRAs started, our careers in gear, and our sons going out on their own. I got involved with computer graphics early in my career, so when the first Mac came out, I enthusiastically jumped on board, and have never owned any other computer.

Anyone want to guess the closing price on August 30? Undefined! It's a Sunday Wise guy! So what’s your guess for Friday, August 28? I knew that AAPL would go up on the news, but was a bit taken aback by today’s explosion.

And after-hours, it closed at 427.44!!! This was a very big day. Dollar wise, it was the largest increase in our portfolio by far, and close if not fully double of the next runner up. The stock will continue to go up and down, ideally with more up than down. But this day was very memorable.

Wise guy! So what’s your guess for Friday, August 28? I knew that AAPL would go up on the news, but was a bit taken aback by today’s explosion. As of yesterday post-earnings, I was thinking $450 pre-split would be a decent price for the end of August, and used $440 and $450 to extrapolate out for what level I would consider writing Sept '22 covered calls at. Like I've said before, while we have enjoyed something like an average 20% annualized gain over the past 5 years, that's also a return I can handle capping returns at, in a couple years. When looking at writing some covered calls lately, a 20% annualized rate, plus a 10% kicker since we often feel AAPL is undervalued, seems about right. FWIW, from 440, and assuming 2 years out, that would be a sept '22 call at around a total of $660, such as a $640 strike with a $20 premium, and not worrying about the extra from the dividend. OTOH, going from $450, and losing the extra kick, you'd be looking at $650 total. It's not for everyone, and could result in selling shares at a low price, but that's really for each person to determine. Like a gift, I don't want to get too greedy, and yet just a 20% annualized rate for 2 years would increase our portfolio by nearly 50%. That said, today's extra $22 over yesterday's AH action was impressive, and I could very well see AAPL blow through $440-$450, especially if there is some positive news for the economy and/or the first couple vaccines. After such an amazing day, it's hard to even imagine where things will stop or slow, but I could imaging getting to $440-$448 next week (40% chance?), a regroup lower, and then an attempt at a step up one or two weeks later. While it is advantageous to write covered calls when volatility is high, I have no need to write them too early. If/when I do it, it will probably be a stepped in approach on the ones I want to write. And I'll still miss the top, while gaining a full wallet of spending money, and letting my wife sleep a little better at night. As was recently quoted, that's "One less thing to worry about", even if it's only moving 10% over from AAPL to some boring ETF.

Just a reminder that there is a large gap from Friday morning’s open of $26.78. That gap may or may not get filled. Just sayin’.
