Technical Apple question: the AirPort Express that I have used for years to stream music to the living room sound system from our iMac seems to have died; the green light is on, but nothing seems seems to get transmitted to the amp of our music system.
It doesn’t look like Apple even sells them any more. Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternate replacement?

If you’re looking for another AirPort then checkout eBay, I bought a couple of the base stations to extend the network from a eBay seller and they’ve worked great.

Chinacat,
Check under the Go Menu in Finder to see if its on the Network, also perhaps locate its .plist file found in your User Library's Preference file and delete it. This will force the Finder to build a new Preference file for the AE which may solve the issue. And/ or do a search to see if there is a firmware update on the Downloads Site.

I tried the Linksys Velop router for a while and found it to be a nightmare. It didn’t even come close to the coverage that was advertised and required rebooting on a regular basis just to keep it working. I’m sure that there are other routers out there that are great, but that was my experience with Linksys.

Yes and the list of antique Apple devices is long, and many are on display in a bookcase. The spaceship design of their early AirPort Extreme is beautiful, along with my G4 Cube.

My Collection of Antiques include: An original Mac SE, Pwerbook 4500, G3 Wallstreet, Power Mac 9600, G4, G5 Tower and i believe the aforementioned AirPort extreme, original iPod and a 1st Gen iPhone.

After my Airport Express died years ago and didn’t check out the reasons why, I ordered a refurb AirPort Extreme to cover more area which supports 3 aapl tv’s and misc devices from the store. Worked for a while but the fan died. Ordered a new fan from Amazon and did surgery to replace it. That failed. Gave it up got a mesh system from Linksys.

On the more pro-sumer side of things for home networking, check out a UniFi system. Could be overkill for many residential installations, but in my experience it's rock solid and high performance. Especially if your house is already wired with CAT5/6 throughout. unifi-network.ui.com/wi-fi
