Good morning. After yesterday’s market performance I’m hoping for a WOW Wednesday today. The pre-market is green at +$0.23 at this moment. Let’s make some money today. Look what Apple patented this monthFrom the comments section: That may be true, but it sure looks like some of the parts you may need for an Apple Car.

Hmm. Ran across this on Twitter this morning...long thread explaining how this VPN App in the App Store is a scam.
Florian Mueller of Foss Patients retweeted it.

What's the impetus to get 5G in your pocket? I'm sure some people have a good reason, like using it as a fast hotspot for heavy computer downloading or multiple systems. Others maybe want to download a full movie right before getting on a plane. But I've never been impeded by 4G speed on my iPhone, so I want to understand the current real world need for it.

Nope, the whole reason that I had the Mini in mind (I currently have a X) was as a relatively cheap way to get a feel for 5G, precisely for the reason you mention. Both because I am retired and because of the pandemic, I am not out of the house as much as I used to be. In particular I no longer have 3 squash matches per week, although now that I am completely vaxed and the Club has re-opened I hope to start trying to get back on the court, even if alone, fairly soon. I, too, have rarely felt limited by 4G, but sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing until you try it. Fortunately, our favorite fruit company has made it possible to spend some cash even when not totally necessary.

The bitcoins are taking some money out of the marker. The question is how does this end? Plenty of people of the younger sort seem to have the idea that this is going to replace currency and gold as a hedge. One wonders how secure the bitcoins really are? What if someone breaks the code and figures out how to mine them in 30 minutes? The whole deal crashes? No one thought the Zodiac cipher 340 could be broken either.

What worries me is the preposterous amount of energy that the bitcoin system in particular has been engineered to use. That is so completely impractical and certainly not future proof. Other crytpocurrencies are implemented differently. But i am not up to date, I don't know if anything changed in that respect.

Fortunately, our favorite fruit company has made it possible to spend some cash even when not totally necessary. I think you're going to have to take on some new habits in order to test it out. Streaming 4k movies? VR gaming? Maybe AR gaming with some cloud based system, so you're testing out speed and latency, with large data needs in a non-predictive way. Admittedly, I didn't realize what I was missing with the 5+ until I got the 11, but that was mainly just with size/screen size and battery life. But that was more device based with quantifiable changed, whereas you have to push the limits to see a difference. We haven't hit speed issues on our rural-ish cable, even with 2 cousins visiting such that we have up to 7 people streaming videos and doing online video calls at the same time. But, it has occasionally killed the router (my guess is overheating a chip). Like the power grid, there are limits, and multiple points of failure. Often our power goes out due to an issue that takes down half the town, whereas it's rarely the last half mile of wire. It's always tough to suggest buying a new iPhone this time of the year, but we're still nearly half a year from the traditional launch and availability. Sometimes the SE is announced this time of the year, but I wouldn't count on it. I'd like to see the Mini stay around to give flexibility, but Apple knows it's costs/profit/draw a lot better than I can guess at. It's been a nice run the last couple weeks. Hopefully after a slight calming down, AAPL can continue the run into announcements and earnings. But each time is a little different, so maybe this time around the run-up won't be at such a strong pace, and there will be room for a surge post-earnings if things turn out better than expected.

Well, the possibility (probability?) that my usage profile does not really benefit from having a 5G phone is exactly the question that I am trying to answer, and the mini seemed like a relatively modest investment to answer the question. Now, it is possible that new or improved services may change that over time, but I would at least have a basis of experience to start from. But who knows? This may not be the time to assume that the results would be indicative of what it may be like when (if?) things return to normal.

This may not be the time to assume that the results would be indicative of what it may be like when (if?) things return to normal. I think for you (and me), the AR stuff might be the soonest. Stretching just a little, the Plant Identifier app we have on our iPhone is close to AR, using some brains locally or in the cloud for identification. If it went a step further, giving videos or the like instantly, that could push the data transfer and latency a little. But I don't really know how big the delta would be between 4g and 5g on that sort of thing. It's good to have the option to be on the cutting edge, or even to just explore things. I know we held off for a while on the iPhones, and now have been holding off on Apple Watches. It's a relatively small price to pay, but at the same time we're halfway through the likely cycle, and for something we plan to keep around for a while it's tempting to wait a little longer. Have fun with the new iPhone if you get one. I'm sure if there isn't something that at least tests the limits now, there will be soon enough. And they are nice, even if my sister-in-law is bugged by the huge size of the 12 Pro Max.
