Good morning, it’s a new day. And today Apple has its big event that we have all been looking forward to, starting at 10:00 PDT. The pre-market is red at -$0.33 at the moment. A Bullish Technical Take On Apple Stock

Autonomous driving on regular roads is clearly not nearly ready for prime time. I particularly don't understand this case. I drove a friend's Tesla a year ago and the accelerator "feels" a lot different than it does in an ICE vehicle. In a Tesla, when you release the accelerator, the power to the wheels almost instantly trickles to nothing. So if there was nobody in the driver's seat, who was holding the accelerator down so the car could be moving fast? (Tesla has reported that it wasn't in autopilot mode at the time) And besides, don't they require a hand to touch the steering when periodically (for example, every 15 seconds, as my car does when in cruise control mode).

Apple saying it wants to be cash neutral doesn't mean that it needs to go to extraordinary measures to get there. There will be bumps in the income stream payout, whether it might be a down year, or whether it's a need for extra R&D or equipment subsidization (build a fab). As much as I'd like Apple to boost the dividend significantly if the cash is burning a hole in their pocket, I'd rather Apple has a little lag and adjustment built in there, like aiming for cash neutral based on a 1-2 year lag.
For today's announcement, I still feel that we don't know how exactly it will be spun, but it would be great if an analyst took the position that if Apple is announcing new stuff, even if just small bumps, that it means Apple is feeling it's outlook for chips is doing ok.
We'll see what Apple has to delight the masses, in an hour and a half.

They are going to sell millions of these iMacs. Just stunning! It's interesting the changes in color choices over the years. Personally I don't much care about the color of my iMac or how the back of it looks, since I am at a desk that's up against windows, and we don't really see it from outside. But I understand that some people care about that a whole lot more, and I'm glad that extra sales to them helps Apple and the stock. But it's almost like skirt length or bell-bottoms, that the trends change but then repeat. And I'll say it. I'm not fashion conscious enough to value to jeans-jumper the woman announcing the iMac was wearing. To me it looked straight from Austin Powers. Just more showing how disconnected I am, I guess. Lots of products so far, and it's cool that Apple can show off some of these fun video cuts (even if on the efficiency and focus fronts it bugs me). They already excelled, but I'm sure creating shows and movies have only increased their capabilities. The stock goes up and the stock goes down. Today it's down a bit, but as the market and analysts absorb this news and make predictions based on this and earnings info, I'm sure the stock will eventually react positively. Eventually.

I’m shocked that they aren’t releasing anything bigger than 24”. I’ve been waiting for a year to replace my 27” iMac and will now have to pass in spite of M1 upgrade. I guess I will buy a 35” ultra wide curved monitor and run it off of my M1 MacBook Air. That’s money I would have rather put in Apple’s (and by extension all y’all’s) pockets.
It’s curious that this thing is aimed at high power users (music, video, photo, graphics) but not available in 27” or larger. Most of us in that demographic need more screen real estate.

While I am using a 27" iMac, I could see using a new 24", and adding a second display if really needed. Is that not a good solution? I've often used 2nd (and 3rd) displays on Macs, all the way back to a rotatable portrait display on a Mac SE. They have different uses, but often I had ones that were the same dimensions and resolution, so I can understand the annoyance of 2 dissimilar displays even if it hasn't bugged me as much as it does to a desktop publisher. Still, it might be a good solution, and even an advantage if the extra screen serves a purpose that the primary one can't, like that rotating screen with different dimensions did.

I’m shocked that they aren’t releasing anything bigger than 24”. Well, not yet at least. I suspect that their experience with very high priced computers hasn't been all that great, they spend a LOT of money developing them, but sell so few that they can't really contribute much to the bottom line. Nevertheless, I think they will probably come out with a larger display version at some point, but perhaps without the super-high quality display that drives up the price so much. Maybe the new trend will be - if you want a super-high-quality display, you have to buy and use an external monitor. I've been waiting a long time to replace my 15.4" MacBook Pro. I really want a larger display MacBook Pro with an M1 (or an M1X or an M2) in it.

This is a fault of the regulators as well. Coke would put Meth in their drinks if it were not illegal. Capitalists will sell anything to ANYBOD TO MAKE MONEY. And they are never happy always more. Like that idiot hedge funder who lost 20 billion in 2 days. All he had to do was buy Cubes, Spiders and Diamonds. And some real estate. Then do some good in the world, but he wanted to double or tipple his money for his ego.
People love these self driving cars for reason unknown to me. They need to be banned and not "software exists but it is disabled". That is crap. If you are too bust to drive then drive strait to a therapist. Musk should be sued definitely.

I thought that was a pretty darned good presentation today, fun, goofy, a little experimental. And after all that, yawn, disdain from the NY Times about the same old guys hawking their tech goods from atop the stage, this was a decent departure from the usual. Cool products too...

My wife and I enjoyed it as well, Ted. And the clip that got the biggest reaction/chuckle from us was the AirTag one where a guy does a *deep* dive into his sofa while looking for his keys. Good stuff. 😊

It’s going to be like Xmas in June. Probably lots of backordered new products but I’m in for a new iMac, new tv and air tags.

In fact, we visit my wife's 87-year-old, widowed aunt every week and we now have her hooked on the show as well. It goes without saying her aunt is hearing language she never heard during my in-law's holiday family meals from years ago. I guess it helped that we first got her used to the language used in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"...so now she can just let it slid and laugh. 😂

As a current Apple TV owner, I am seriously disappointed in the upgrade. I can't think of a single reason to upgrade. I expected spatial audio for the AirPod Max's and it isn't there. This product is being starved. To top it off, they put an A12 in it?! Seriously?! First time I have been this annoyed with a product announcement in like forever.

NFLX tanked after hours -8.5% after beating EPS expectations but slightly missing subscriber number targets. The WSJ headline is “Netflix Subscriber Growth Slows as Economies Reopen.”
Since tech in general, and AAPL in particular, we’re seen as “closed economy” plays that did well during COVID, expect some tech/AAPL downside ahead from the resurgence of this narrative.
This could even be at play in AAPL earnings. If AAPL reports good earnings but doesn’t come out with strong guidance, it could suffer from a similar “yeah they did well during COVID but that window is over” narrative.

My short term product interest is the new Apple TV remote, a 4 pack of tags to play along. Seeing the iMac made me reevaluate my decision to trade the 2017 MacBook Air for an eventual 16” MBP. Based on benchmarks and the new battery in my 2013 15” MBP, I’ll likely go with a build-to-order MB Air with M1. I’ve had at least 4 “air” machines and really like them. The iPad Pro is crazy good but I still can’t find a use case for so much power in a tablet. Wishing for iPad mini with pencil v2 didn’t pan out, yet. All in all happy to see Apple isn’t standing still.

That remote does look like a big improvement. I too, will try the tags. Including the key chain. Not the $400 Hermès one though.
