Good morning, it’s earning report day for AAPL. It will not be a surprise if Apple provides a good report of it’s performance for this past quarter, but it will be surprising if Mr. Market rewards the share holders with a large increase in price. It’s anyone’s guess. “Life is but an adventure.” The pre-market is red at -$0.36 at the moment. It’s anyone’s guess. “Life is but an adventure.” Looks like Google is doing ok today, up ~4% after being up as much as ~6%. I haven't looked into their earnings and how much they beat by, but it's good to see that someone out there is managing to do well enough that the market is rewarding the stock price.

I’m expecting blowout earnings for Apple this afternoon along with a positive change in sentiment. We shall see.

If looking to buy Puts to protect my shares from a big drop post-ER (say 1000 shares) what would you buy?

Options are priced for a very small move either way. Sometimes this screws all the options players & is good for the market makers. I only buy out of the options at the longest date out. 4/16/23 140 calls can be bought for 21. So if you expect the price target of 160 to be eclipsed in 2 years that is a good hedge along with selling some calls with a prior expiration (if you own them-or selling covered calls) or stock if you are really worried. Short term puts and calls are just gambling but if you enjoy it, I don' see any difference between that and betting on sports. Good luck.

If looking to buy Puts to protect my shares from a big drop post-ER (say 1000 shares) what would you buy? Not to be mean or anything, but you're asking a bunch of strangers on the internet for financial advice on a specific trade? 🤔 😝 😵

Ted,
Lol, strangers?
I been here through multiple iterations of the AFB/AFB2 board - I just don't know shit about options, but have faith in humanity - gonna let it ride as always, but I am concerned based upon action in AMD and to a lesser extent MSFT today.
Duckpins - Sports betting? - really suck at that... had Steph Curry O33.5 last nite - no bueno.

After watching the rise and fall of the AAPL share price for over 8 years, why do you suddenly feel the need to protect your shares from a big drop, post ER? Just curious.

Good luck, everybody. I expect good things to be said. No clue where the shares trade tomorrow. I'm hoping for a big dividend increase (10%?).

www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/04/apple-reports-second-quarter-results/CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA APRIL 28, 2021 Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2021 second quarter ended March 27, 2021. The Company posted a March quarter record revenue of $89.6 billion, up 54 percent year over year, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $1.40. International sales accounted for 67 percent of the quarter’s revenue. “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Apple is in a period of sweeping innovation across our product lineup, and we’re keeping focus on how we can help our teams and the communities where we work emerge from this pandemic into a better world. That certainly begins with products like the all-new iMac and iPad Pro, but it extends to efforts like the 8 gigawatts of new clean energy we’ll help bring onto the grid and our $430 billion investment in the United States over the next 5 years.” “We are proud of our March quarter performance, which included revenue records in each of our geographic segments and strong double-digit growth in each of our product categories, driving our installed base of active devices to an all-time high,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “These results allowed us to generate operating cash flow of $24 billion and return nearly $23 billion to shareholders during the quarter. We are confident in our future and continue to make significant investments to support our long-term plans and enrich our customers’ lives.” Apple’s board of directors has declared a cash dividend of $0.22 per share of the Company’s common stock, an increase of 7 percent. The dividend is payable on May 13, 2021 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on May 10, 2021. The board of directors has also authorized an increase of $90 billion to the existing share repurchase program. Apple will provide live streaming of its Q2 2021 financial results conference call beginning at 2:00 p.m. PT on April 28, 2021 at apple.com/investor/earnings-call. This webcast will also be available for replay for approximately two weeks thereafter. Apple periodically provides information for investors on its corporate website, apple.com, and its investor relations website, investor.apple.com. This includes press releases and other information about financial performance, reports filed or furnished with the SEC, information on corporate governance, and details related to its annual meeting of shareholders.

Unless I am calculating something wrong, it looks like the P/E (TTM) just dropped from 36.xx to 31.xx ....

Short term puts and calls are just gambling but if you enjoy it, I don' see any difference between that and betting on sports. Good luck. Actually no. No gambling. Short term puts are insurance to avoid too large losses from an existing investment. Buy them to protect your investment when there is uncertainty (like there was earlier today). There are tools that you can use (like in TOS) to estimate how much protection they deliver. But at this point in time, this day, right now, I am happy that my insurance premium went down the drain and I didn't use it...

This company absolutely crushed the pandemic, and is in fine position to crush in the post-pandemic.

As to the original question, I would buy a bear put spread before earnings that expires a couple of weeks later. Look at strikes lower than the expected move, so before earnings this month, something like a 123/128 BePS. I have that position, and likewise am happy to write it off as the cost of doing business.

After that enormous beat, after hours has cooled off, now up only 1.2%. It’s really ridiculous. I’ll never understand the markets irrational ideas about Apple.
I also own FB. It’s up 7% after hours.

Anyone else think that maybe, just maybe that Tim won’t be fired after these results? He was likely worried after seeing posts here calling for his head.

Some things are more important to some people than your account which you did nothing to earn other than buy a few shares that the investor class wouldn’t miss if you never did.

I read it as a joke lightly poking fun at people who were demanding Tim's head in recent weeks. Tim will not be fired, but he will retire someday ... and I don't doubt that there will be some sharp [stock] reaction to that announcement. I suspect that he will announce his retirement well in advance and that he will discuss the succession issue as well. I still can't believe how strong the mac numbers were!

I read it as a joke lightly poking fun at people who were demanding Tim's head in recent weeks. There was only one who in a fit of disbelief or whatever called for his head so to speak. Lstream’s comment was aimed not only to him but referring to many other from the dungeon who never called for his removal.. He has hard feelings and cannot accept differences. Obviously.
