Feels like today could be the day, folks. I was going to ask which day this might be, but it looks like things have changed in the 15 minutes after the first 5 minutes. Patience. Sometimes it takes a bit.

Feels like today could be the day, folks. I was going to ask which day this might be, but it looks like things have changed in the 15 minutes after the first 5 minutes. Patience. Sometimes it takes a bit. The 50-day moving average that's been acting like a lid on the share price for the last month broke with conviction. The price lowered to "backtest" the level after that, but then bounced up again, taking out the prior highs. So it feels to me like a distinct change in character from what we've seen in the last month. As long as it stays above 128.75 by the end of today...

It’s a month old, but Gruber had some interesting thoughts about Apple’s China conundrum: ——- But what about Apple’s customers in China? What would I want Apple to do if I were a Chinese citizen who wants to use an iPhone and iCloud? (And if I were a Chinese citizen, I would very much want to use an iPhone and iCloud.) There’s no hiding the fact that Option A is a gut-wrenching decision that goes against Apple’s stated brand values. Mark Zuckerberg has made Apple’s position in China his main argument that they’re hypocrites on privacy. But Option A is Apple’s only way to serve their own customers in China. Chinese iCloud users have less privacy than iCloud users everywhere else in the world. But that’s true of every aspect of life in China. ——- New York Times Report on Apple’s iCloud ‘Hard Bargain’ in China. There’s a lot more there, and my take is In Tim I Trust.

It’s almost a month old, but I also found Gruber’s take on the new iMacs to be interesting in The 24-Inch M1 iMac. Of course, that doesn’t make it any easier to wait for ours to arrive.

I just checked costco.com, and they had all 3 versions, in varying colors but including silver in the low and mid, available for delivery tomorrow. These are the 8 gig versions, so if doing a BTO option with more memory or other special things, it won't work for you. OTOH, if buying a standard version, you get it for $50 off, with a 2 year warranty instead of just 1 year, and if you use a Costco credit card you get a 4 year warranty. As a shareholder I'd rather the full retail price go to Apple directly. But as a consumer, especially if other options have a time delay.... (nice to see $130.00. Better if it flew through the level, but big round numbers are always good to reach)

I see no specific catalyst (besides generally great company). You guys feel this breakout is entirely technical (and/or manipulation)?

I don't consider a ~5% rise from the 1-month low, of about 123.50, to be a breakout. If we break through the April high of ~135, and continue higher, I would consider * that* a breakout. Even technically I don't see how it's a breakout.

There are a number of problems when buying from someone other than Apple (or a similarly well optioned seller, like B&H Photo for example). Not just availability, but also cost. For example, Costco might have the iMac at $50 off, BUT, even if I am willing to take 8GB instead of 16GB (and I am not), I would hae to spend an extra $129 for the magic trackpad. If I buy from Apple, I would pay $50 to switch the mouse to the trackpad. And if I need a mouse periodically, I'd use a generic $10 mouse as I've done with my macbook pro for the last 9 years. In the end, when buying from Costco, not only do I not get what I really want (16GB/1TB/trackpad), but it ends up costing me a bit more to make it close to what I want.

I reread it and it is still interesting. He does sound a bit like a fanboy because of the whole 180 degree change of his opinion of the chin and the white bezels, but overall a good read. Again. But I want to discuss one question in it - "My question is, why go with Touch ID on the keyboard instead of Face ID on the iMac itself?" I wonder if it has to do with how far away your face is from the face ID sensor? Maybe with a phone, that is a foot or two away from your face, that sensor works reliably and seamlessly, but with a desktop that may be 3+ feet away it wouldn't work anymore? Or it could simply be a matter of cost, why add a component to the iMac that isn't really absolutely necessary and serves to reduce margin. Or it could be a combination of factors (as almost everything is when it comes to design).

No matter what the BTO options are. It's an interesting situation. FWIW, I have a box of keyboards and another box of mice. I'm still using a maybe 18 year old microsoft mouse. It's not that I think it is the best out there, but it is the one I am used to, and when I switched to the Apple wireless one that came with my iMac, I had a couple issues (mainly when the battery was low, I think), and the non-button buttons just don't have a similar feedback. And so I pulled this one back out of the drawer, and it just works. Kinda like this Apple keyboard, probably from 10-15 years ago, complete with keypad and an eject button. Nice move up AAPL. I don't know if this is the start of something bigger yet, but that would be pleasant to see. Thanks Apple.

You probably understand technicals better than I do, but it seemed we were range bound between the 50day and 200 day - 23ish and 128ish - and there was a lot of conversation about breaking above 128, which we decidedly did do.

My 27" iMac was off by a whole 1mm. I never noticed a problem. Then I moved an envelope out of the way, and it turned out that was .5 mm of my measured difference. This is probably the difference of a single paper thick shim under the base. A tiny sticker shim would be enough to "correct the problem". Some of us do expect perfection in everything (and thus are often disappointed), especially if it is seen as a higher end item. But, like some of the "-gate" type Apple items of the past, some things are blown out of proportion.

I just remembered another reason to buy directly from Apple in many cases. They sometimes run specials for selected customers. Most often for education-related customers. For example they just announced that if you buy a Mac or iPad for college, they will throw in a pair of Airpods and sell you AppleCare for 20% off. That's a pretty good benefit that could be worth about $200.
